Imagine the day when all the teachers unions have been neutered and all the bad teachers have been fired and only highly effective teachers are left. My point here is that the main policy goal of the education reform movement doesn’t seem to lead us anywhere with regard to the better education of our kids. EDUCATORS in Washington couldn’t agree more with The Seattle Times on one major issue raised in a Dec. Legislators should not be allowed to drag their feet in hopes the problem will be solved by HB 2261, the education-reform bill passed in 2009 with no funding mechanism and a timeline stretching to 2018. Charter schools may have the potential to provoke experimentation, but many of our students already attend creative and innovative public schools.
We applaud The Times for opposing efforts to decrease critical levy-equalization funding for property-poor school districts. On behalf of educators, parents and students across Washington, we ask The Times and its readers to join us in advocating for a new and stable source of revenue to fund our public schools. Mary Lindquist, a high-school social studies teacher, currently serves as president of the Washington Education Association, which represents 82,000 educators across the state.

In this video Robinson talks about education reform, the “fictitious epidemic” of ADHD and how “we are getting our children through education by anesthetizing them.” We need to anesthetize them, he says, because there is so much to stimulate kids in our technologically saturated world that our outdated education system is boring by comparison. He describes how our present educational system is based on the industrialized model of education — which utilizes grouping kids by age, standardized testing, standardized curriculum etc. Much of what he talks about in the video I remember from my first year of teaching…in 1993.

Before the state considers moving to a merit-pay system or other measures, the Legislature should amply fund education. Chris Gregoire on creative and collaborative, but realistic, ways to enhance our education system, including promoting innovation and an effective evaluation system. Discounting undependable and fluctuating federal funds, state funding barely even covers the costs of classroom teaching on average statewide. We do not intransigently oppose any reforms that are aimed in good faith at improving student learning.
However, improving our schools across the board depends upon myriad factors, most important funding.
