It’s a well-known fact that most everyone should participate in 30 minutes of physical activity a day and eat healthfully in order to stay physically fit, but why does it seem like mental health doesn’t receive half the attention it deserves? In any given year, only 20 percent of children with mental disorders are identified and receive mental health services. Some of the consequences of attempting to let serious mental health problems go untreated include things like decreased performance in school, higher rate of incarceration in adolescence and later on in life, and even suicide.
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has launched a new statewide mental health awareness campaign focused on teens and young adults called “Speak Your Mind Texas.” The campaign centers on a series of town-hall style community conversations throughout Texas hosted by DSHS.
Houston’s “Community Conversation on Teen and Young Adult Mental Health” will be held on Tuesday, July 1 from 11 a.m. Mental health professionals, young people seeking treatment and local stakeholders will discuss mental health issues affecting their community. The campaign is part of a statewide grassroots movement to remove barriers to treatment, particularly among teens and young adults.
DSHS encourages anyone in the Houston area who works with teens or young adults to participate in the local “Speak Your Mind Texas” community conversation. With the right kind of support and opportunities, people can become stronger, improving their ability to recover readily from illness, depression and adversity. All of us go through the hard times when our thinking and emotions are adversely affected, but we usually manage to come through this period and carry on with our daily lives. The psychological challenges faced by adolescents mean that they are usually at an increased risk of mental illness.

In the past year in Sudbury, health experts say the number of teens and young adults seeking help has nearly doubled as more young people report signs of depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. The crisis centre at Health Sciences North has seen almost twice as many cases in the past year, compared to previous years. The first three years of the 10-year plan to tackle mental illness in Ontario focuses solely on youth. More attention will be given to the matter, as the province has increased its spending a€” by 5 per cent a€” to nearly $800 million annually to help people dealing with mental illness.
Of children ages 9 to 17, 21 percent have a diagnosable mental or addictive disorder that causes at least minimal impairment.
Despite effective treatments, there are long delays, sometimes decades, between the first onset of symptoms and when people seek and receive treatment. The best way to deal with problems like these is to talk to somebody you trust to give you good advice; better yet - seek help from a medical professional. Information will be available on warning signs of mental illness and substance abuse, and resources that can help youth. Ongoing research reveals the condition can be sparked by a complex combination of genetics, physical, social and biological environments.

Affected teens as well as their families are taught how to understand and manage the situation.
I can almost guarantee you somebody you know has a mental disorder like Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, or Schizophrenia. An untreated mental disorder can lead to a more severe, more difficult to treat illness and to the development of co-occurring mental illnesses. If the chaotic nature of thinking patterns and unrelenting emotions become unbearable, these people can suffer from mental illness. Factors such as teen lifestyle, substance abuse, depression and family environments can also play a part in the onset or relapse of mental illness. With proper treatment and support these symptoms can be treated at any mental health facility for teens and the condition can go into remission. Families also learn how they can remain helpful to the teen even after he or she returns home.
Mental problems are characterized by alternations in thinking, behaviors or moods (or a combination of two or all the conditions), and inability to function normally over an extended period of time.
