Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia is a not-for-profit charity organisation that develops and delivers training programs in mental health first aid. In Australia, approximately one in five adults will experience mental illness in any given year.

Lack of knowledge and stigmatising attitudes about mental illness may prevent people from seeking help early, seeking the best sort of help and also providing appropriate support to colleagues and family members, simply because they do not know how. In 2000, in order to improve the level of mental health literacy of the community, a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course was developed by husband and wife team Betty Kitchener OAM and Professor Tony Jorm, following the model that has been successfully applied in many countries with conventional first aid. In the Mental Health First Aid course, you will learn the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where and how to get help, and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective. When you complete the Mental Health First Aid course with us, you will be issued with a certificate which can be used towards your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) qualifications. Mental health first aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training courses authored by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and delivered by accredited MHFA Instructors across the country. The 12-hour Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course teaches adults (18 years and over) how to provide initial support to adults who are developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis.
It aims at preserving life, providing comfort, preventing deterioration and promoting recovery among people who are developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. In light of this, all members of the community can expect to have close contact with someone experiencing a mental illness.

Since this time, MHFA training has spread to every state and territory in Australia and to 21 countries internationally. Like physical first aid, Mental Health First Aid is given until the person receives professional help or until the crisis resolves.
A manual is provided to each participant attending the course, along with useful mental health resources.
The Mental Health Recovery Institute offers MHFA Courses as authored by MHFA Australia, delivered by Instructors who are currently accredited by MHFA Australia.
