Dry eyes occur when the eyes either don’t make enough tears, or the quality of the tears produced is reduced, which means the tears can evaporate rapidly from the surface of the eye, allowing the eye to dry. When seen on the microscope, using a fluorescent dye called fluorescein and a special cobalt blue light, the denuded surface areas can be seen as green specks on the surface of the eye.
The symptoms can be extremely variable, causing anything from mild irritation to severe discomfort. Blinking spreads a tear film over the surface of the eye – the eyelids do the opposite to what a windscreen wiper does on a car. When there are not enough tears, or if the quality of tears is poor, the surface of the eye becomes dry, and this causes inflammation.
This can be done by simply applying a hot compress using hot tap-water and a flannel to the eye each day, and then cleaning the lid margin with the water and flannel. Regular lubrication in the form of gels or drops can help keep the surface of the eyes wet, and thus reduce symptoms. There are a wide range of eye drops available – consult your optometrist, GP or Ophthalmologist for advice on which to use. When there is severe dry eye with reduction in tear production, blocking the drainage of tears down the tear ducts can help keep the tears that are produced on the surface of the eye.
When concentrating (eg using a computer or driving), we can blink up to 5 times less often, leading to increased tear evaporation. Although the condition does not, in itself, affect the vision, because of its contagious nature,  it should be diagnosed and treated, immediately.  Conjunctivitis may continue to be contagious as long as there are noticeable symptoms.
Viral Conjunctivitis has no treatment and will merely run its course in time.  It should be diagnosed nevertheless, in order to rule out other conditions. To diagnose Conjunctivitis requires and eye exam and often the testing of the eye’s secretions. Dry eye syndrome is a very common and frustrating disorder suffered by over 10 million Americans.
Mucous component:A  Mucous secreted from glands within the eyelid and conjunctiva (the clear skin covering the white part of the eye).
Dry eye symptoms: burning, itching, chronic red eye, foreign body sensation (a feeling similar to having sand in the eyes), intermittent blurry vision and excessive tearing.
Intermittent blurry vision is typically aggravated during visually tasking activities such as reading, working on the computer, watching TV or driving. Diagnosis of dry eyes can usually be done by history of symptoms, but it can be confirmed by simple office tests.A  The physician can evaluate tear production, evaporation time, and quality using special drops and tests. Treatment options for dry eyes are many, but the patient must realize that dry eyes are a chronic problem and persistent treatment will be necessary. Artificial Tears:A  Over the counter eye drops can help supplement the aqueous component of tears.
Some like to use a mild soap like baby shampoo or commercially available eyelid scrubbing pads to aid in this process and that works well.A  Some have proposed putting uncooked rice in a sock and warming it in the microwave to use as the warm compress and that seems to stay warm longer.
Meibomian Gland Probing: A new method of relieving the obstruction to the flow of oil from the meibomian glands has recently been shown to offer marked relief of symptoms. The eyes are complex organs, with many parts that must work together to produce clear vision. Often, the reduced tear quality is a result of blockage or inflammation of the oil glands within the lid margin.
However, in severe cases where the eye is allowed to dessicate, the cornea may scar and this could cause reduced vision.

However, most people can get significant relief from symptoms using a variety of treatments and measures. Some people recommend using chemicals such as baby shampoo and sodium bicarbonate, but more often than not, these can cause ocular surface irritation, and so at least initially, are best avoided. Avoiding air conditioned environments and direct heat (eg, open fire or heat from cooker) can help for the same reason.
It is very prevalent in this part of the country as we have an abundance of dry weather and wind aggravating the problem.A A healthy tear film is necessary for a normally functioning eye.
It lubricates the eye, delivers oxygen and nutrients to the ocular surface, and washes away allergens, debris, and keeps the ocular surface clean.
The oil rests on top of the aqueous layer like oil on water preventing the tears from evaporating and stabilizing the tear film. Tearing can be triggered by emotion or irritation such as from getting something in your eyes.
During these activities, our blink rate decreases allowing the eyes to dry out.A  Those who suffer from dry eyes may notice clear vision when they initiate these activities, but their vision becomes progressively more blurry. By placing a silicone plug into the opening of the system, the punctum, the tear drainage can be significantly slowed allowing them to nourish the ocular surface. By doing this procedure at home at least once a day, the oil component of the tear film can be greatly improved. Chronically inflamed eyelids tend to harbor more bacteria and the antibiotic activity of Azasite helps clear the unwanted bacteria. How Do You Get Pink Eye ?Conjunctivitis, which is also commonly referred as ‘pink eye’, is a viral or bacterial infection of the eye which makes the eye go extremely red and stays like that for several days.
The result is often the production of excessive watery tears ( as opposed to oily tears) which results in watering of the eyes. This layer is usually normal except in rare systemic diseases or certain chemical injuries to the eyes.A A deficiency in any of these three components can lead to dry eye problems. This reflexive tearing contains only the watery component and does little to soothe the eye as these tears are lacking the other components. The vision can temporarily be cleared by blinking because that replenishes tears to the dry ocular surface. Hot, dry, windy climates, smoking, and contact lens wear can also cause or aggravate dry eyes. This minor procedure can easily and painlessly be performed in the office during your examination and is usually covered by insurance. Also, Azasite has anti-inflammatory action that helps decrease the inflammation of the oil secreting glands thus improving the production and flow of oil from the eyelids. Unfortunately, blinking doesna€™t always work and you are forced to discontinue that activity.
Certain medications, thyroid conditions, vitamin A deficiency, and diseases such as Parkinsona€™s and Sjogrena€™s can cause dryness.
Then, wrap the moist wash cloth around your finger and rub or massage your upper and lower eyelid to remove the debris from the lashes and to compress the oil glands in the eyelid, expressing the oil from them. It is used once a day at night for the first 1-2 months and then has shown to be effective with a maintenance dose thereafter. Maskin of Tampa, Florida, involves an in-office treatment using tiny stainless steel probes measuring 1-2mm in length to break up adhesions and fibrotic bands within the duct of the glands. Women frequently experience problems with dry eyes as they enter menopause because of hormonal changes.

This scarring forms from chronic eyelid inflammation.A  Because the duct openings are extremely small, and there are 20-30 ducts in each eyelid, this treatment takes some time to perform. The conjunctiva also contains blood vessels which become inflamed due to the reaction of a virus or even because of an allergic reaction. The eyelid is numbed using a liquid gel anesthetic before the treatment and is performed in the usual eye examination chair. This inflammation of blood vessels makes the eye turn red and sore and causes the disease called conjunctivitis. Benefits reported by patients who have had this procedure performed include less foreign body sensation, decreased burning and irritation, less need for artificial tears, and improved vision among others.
People who are allergic to dust or pollen are at a especially high risk of contracting conjunctivitis since even slightest particle of dust entering the eye can cause an abnormal reaction with the conjunctiva. The eyes may get bloodshot or red due to other factors too like lack of sleep and stress but the pink eye caused by conjunctivitis remains reddish pink for days on end.
If however, the conjunctivitis has started to affect the cornea of if it does not respond to treatment, then the doctor may order a laboratory test of the secretions of the eye.
However, to determine whether it is a viral, bacterial or allergic infection, some tests may have to be done.
If the eye is secreting a yellow-green fluid, it indicates that it might be a bacterial infection and a culture test of that secretion will have to be done to identify the bacteria.
If the conjunctivitis is caused due to an allergy, a patch test will be done to determine the allergen which caused the conjunctivitis.
It may take up to 7-10 days during which the eye can be very painful and itchy but it is not recurring in nature. Also, to prevent others from being infected from your virus, make sure you wash your hands as often as possible and avoid rubbing your eyes with your fingers. It is the quickest to heal too.Bacterial – The characteristics of a bacterial conjunctivitis is that there is a discharge of yellow or greenish-yellow fluid from the eye which can cause eyelashes to stick together. The eye also gets swollen in this type of infection.Allergic – Some people may get a pink eye due to allergy from dust, pollen, certain kinds of shampoos, perfumes etc.
However, bacterial infection is usually more intense and things can get messy if it spreads to the cornea of the eye. The above stated home remedies are enough to take care of the pink eye even without visiting the doctor.
For severe cases some topical antibiotics may be prescribed if it is a bacterial infection.
For viral and allergic reactions, antihistamines and anti-inflammatory medications may be given as the doctor sees fit to speed up the healing process. To prevent it, a few drops of erythromycin are immediately put in the baby’s eyes so that he or she does not contract the conjunctivitis virus immediately after birth. If infection does occur, it should be treated immediately through oral as well as intravenous antibiotics as if it spreads to the cornea of the baby’s eye, it may even cause blindness.
