This is a very common condition and in a majority of patients we do not know what causes this syndrome. In the early stages the symptoms are intermittent but later become continuous as the condition worsens.
The diagnosis of carpal tunnel is made clinically but you may be referred for electical tests (nerve conduction studies).
Some patients have what is called a 'double crush syndrome' in which the median nerve also may be compressed elsewhere (usually in the neck from where it begins).
When the syndrome is associated with certain other conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, clearing of the soft tissue lining of the tendons (synovectomy) may be required. Infection of the wound is possible and in the early stage can be successfully treated with antibiotics.
Stiffness of the finger joints is possible and hence the need to exercise them soon after surgery. Severe complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a rare but serious complication after hand surgery. Damage to the median nerve is possible but very rare when the open surgical technique is used. The information contained on this site is for guidance only and not intended for self diagnosis. It is normal for anyone who comes across a bulging vein on their head to be overly concerned about this finding. Erythema Nodosum is a skin disorder in which red bumps are formed under the skin causing inflammation. The most prominent sign for identifying this disease is raised tender lesions or bumps on the layer of the skin, more particular in front part of the legs and below the knees. Since common insect bites also produces similar symptoms, it is essential to get it checked with your doctor to eliminate EN.
Treatment should be oriented towards identifying the underlying cause of the disease and curing it.
Normally, Erythema Nodosum stays in the skin causing painful blisters for 3-6 weeks and gradually withers off. One of them is called the median nerve and like a telephone cable it passes through a protective conduit (a tunnel) on the front of the wrist. The patient will notice numbness in the fingers and thumb together with weakness and wasting of the muscles at the base of the thumb (See picture). These may be to confirm the diagnosis in patients in whom the symptoms and signs are not classical.
A skin incision of 3-4 cm is required (see picture) and at surgery the roof of the carpal tunnel is opened thereby decompressing the median nerve. Unfortunately it is not possible to predict this problem but it needs to be monitored and treated (usually with physiotherapy) if it develops. Once the stitches are removed the scar can be massaged regularly with a soft, non-perfumed cream for a couple of months.

Generally patients can return to a desk job within a few days and perform reasonable tasks with the hand. Always seek professional advice of a qualified health care provider before you undergo treatment or for answers to any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. While this may be a sign of an underlying disease of conditions, bulging veins of the head or in other parts of the body may also be normal and brought about by aging or pregnancy. The normal aging process involves loss of collagen and elastin in the body that preserve the elasticity and strength of the vein. This type of skin inflammation occurs only in specific fatty areas and not on other parts of the skin. Very often it is found in association with certain infectins like Chlamydia, streptococcus, Hepatitis B infection, Cat scratch disease and Syphilis, Leptospirosis and mycobacterial infection. The lesions may be painful and it may turn into purple color within few days of infection and finally turns brown before fading, leaving a small patch on the affected part. Punch biopsy is done in case the doctor finds it difficult to confirm the disease by examining the skin layer.
Feet are incredibly complex, comprised of 28 bones, 30 joints, and more than 100 ligaments. The condition is also associated with pregnancy, thyroid problems, diabetes, previous wrist fractures, arthritis and rheumatoid disease. If the condition is neglected most people will find that there symptoms will get progressively worse. Start exercising your fingers immediately after surgery (Make a fist, and then stretch your fingers out; bend your wrist forwards and backwards and touch each finger tip in turn with your thumb). If the scar is tender to press, tapping along the scar and on either side of it firmly with your fingertips a few times a day may be useful.
The veins in the body have valves that work as one-way flaps preventing blood from flowing back as it moves upward in the body. As one ages, loss of collagen and elastin causes the veins to weaken and are less inefficient in pushing back blood toward the heart. This causes painful reddish lumps on the affected parts and is very often found in front portion of the legs and below the knees. Sometimes, if the skin becomes sensitive to certain medications like penicillin, amoxicillin or sulfonamides, the skin may develop lumps causing inflammation. Initially the lesions may be broad and raised but when it withers off from the skin it becomes flat to shrink down. In some cases, the doctor may ask you to do throat culture for eliminating streptococcus infection and an X-ray of the chest to rule out TB.
Shoes that are too narrow can contribute to the development of bunions or swelling in the big-toe joint.
The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society has an official position statement advising against this type of surgery.
At surgery a tourniquet cuff is applied around the forearm so as to stop bleeding and make the operation safer and quicker.

The small sticky dressing should be left for 10 -12 days when the stitches will need to come out. The median nerve will continue to be compressed resulting in total, constant numbness, wasting and weakness of the muscles supplied by the nerve in the hand. However if the condition has been present for a long time, then recovery from symptoms such as constant numbness and muscle weakness is unpredictable.
This is caused anterior pillar pain and is due to the released ligament (roof of the tunnel).
Bulging of the veins may be a result of faulty valves where it may lead to pooling of the blood and vein enlargement. Existing disorders like leukemia, rheumatic fever, ulcer and Becheta€™s disease may cause Erythema Nodosum in some people. In case of chronic Erythema Nodosum, there may be other symptoms like fever, redness of the skin with irritation and general ill feeling. Shoes that crowd the smaller toes may lead to the development of clawing or hammertoes and calluses and corns on areas that rub up against the inside of the shoes. This tourniquet is needed for about 10 minutes and can be uncomfortable in a small number of patients. The arm should be kept elevated after surgery for 1-2 days as this will prevent the fingers swelling and causing discomfort. It is debatable as to whether the benefits of this procedure significantly outweigh the risks. Pregnancy is another condition that can cause veins in the body to swell although you will usually find swollen veins in the legs instead of in veins of the head.
Unlike other skin disorder, this type of nodular swelling exhibits a specific pattern thus easy to identify. Other causes of bulging veins of the head include increased blood pressure and temporal arteritis. Pregnancy causes an increase in the total blood volume circulating in the body but there is also a subsequent decrease in blood flow from to the legs to the pelvis.
The good thing about Erythema Nodosum (EN) is it will disappear on its own after few weeks, leaving only small scar on the infected area. Bulging veins in other parts of the body may also be a result of obesity, venous obstruction, and lack of body movement. This causes pooling of blood in the legs and vein bulging is often worse during the latter part of pregnancy when the uterus causes great pressure on the leg veins.
