This book and its sequel (The Hungry Thing Returns) are the perfect books to teach rhyming to older children.
Horton the elephant hears a small sound from a speck of dust, which turns out to be a tiny community called Whoville. This and the other books in the series are made even better by Jane Chapman’s endearing illustrations. This and the other Miss Spider  books are bright, fun stories suited for older children because of their higher vocabulary and clever word play.
A clever mouse outwits a hungry fox, owl, and snake by warning them of a ferocious beast whose favorite foods are roasted fox, owl ice cream, and scrambled snake.
This is the classic (1961) story of a broken tea pot and all the kitchen items who try to help.
Katy Caboose is unhappy with her dirty, jostling life at the end of the train but finds happiness at the end of this action-filled story when her rusty bolts break apart from the train. I wanted you to know that, your wonderful site provided a creative spark- and combined with my background, I will soon be submitting my book to publishers and agents with the hope of it becoming a reality for children everywhere.
I’m listing this book first because you have got to check it out if you haven’t seen it yet!
We love this exquisitely illustrated book about a girl and a mouse living parallel lives in the same home. The first thing you’ll notice is the 3-D artwork created with paint, fabric, and clay. My toddler loves to look at books by himself, but getting my busy little boy to sit for a book is still a challenge.
Probably one of my favorite reasons for having kids is having the excuse to read children’s books again.
We frequent the library to keep things interesting, and have a massive collection of books, which can be found in just about every room throughout the house. Another book our entire family has loved and used as an amazing tool for learning is Have You Filled a Bucket Today?: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Michigan author Carol McCloud. The book is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and has recently updated and revised it to include more positive language. The new edition encourages positive behavior and helps readers better understand that bucket filling is a choice, bucket dipping is a negative behavior caused by a too empty bucket, and we an fill and dip into our own buckets, too. I often recommend this book {and all the other books McCloud has written} when friends say they are looking for something to teach kindness. I am excited to host a fun giveaway with the latest edition, plus other great books and goodies to get you started on your bucket filling journey! Follow the prompts below to enter to win. Currently we are reading Diary of the Wimpy Kid – 8yr old, Llama Llama books 5yr old and anything in between with our 1 yr old. Right now, Evan is obsessed with Elmo…so anything he is in ?? And Alex recently got How Do Dinosaurs Laugh Out Loud?

The Hobbit: Excellent for reading out loud to younger kids, and perfect afternoon reading for tweens, this prequel to the Lord of the Rings books follows Bilbo Baggins on his adventures across the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood forests of Middle Earth. Dragon Rider: The Dragon Rider books are long, but an easy read for the 9 to 12 year old crowd. A Wrinkle in Time (series): This trilogy is a great read for kids who struggle with fitting in, feeling lonely, or who have dealt with loss.

I am a musician, writer, former preschool music teacher and parent of three children (my youngest is about to turn 19!) I grew up with Dick, Jane and Sally as well as Dr.
Because of my music background, I have long associated the cadence of rhyming and rhythm stories to young children enjoying the process of learning to read.
In the meantime, thank you so much for the work you have done in putting together an incredible resource! Every day on the farm, Millie the cow anxiously waits for her favorite thing… scaring the mail carrier! I would also add Ellen Walsh series – Mouse Count, Mouse Shapes, etc and especially Mouse Paint. I’m not familiar with Mouse Mess, but it looks like a great read for our library story time program.
There are so many great ones out there and I love researching them and finding ones I know my kids will adore. Some have been gifts or special treats on birthdays, etc., and many have been found second-hand, too. If you haven’t read any (all!) of these great books, I encourage you to pick them up and enjoy!
Our copy of The Red Pyramid is held together with several layers of clear packing tape and has been read countless times by both girls. Talking animals, adventures with mythical beasts, magic and mystery and fantasy combined with the fight between good and evil… what’s not to love? I read the first two books to my girls at a young age, and I was thrilled when they became old enough to read the entire series themselves. This tale of a young dragon who sets out in search of the legendary ancestral home of the dragons enchants kids and makes for a great read-aloud book for younger kids too.

Each book in the series highlights a different clay dragon with unusual powers and the adventures that ensue telepathically. Both of my girls checked these books one out of the library enough times that we bought our own copies.

Spider is devastated when none of the insects she’s invited will come to her beautiful tea party. To that end, after writing and publishing many stories and articles in the newspaper, in magazines and in anthologies, I wanted you to know that I have just completed my first children’s book- and it is all in rhyme! I never feel guilty spending money on books because I know it is the one thing that brings great joy to our family.
The books are cleverly written adventures that explore ancient Egyptian mythology and the world of magic. She is a tenacious heroine who overcomes incredible obstacles, from the constant need to forage for food and water, how to clothe herself and dealing with the death of her little brother.
I still read these once a year or so, just to get lost in the world of Ma and Pa, Mary, Carrie and Grace, Laura and Almanzo. I’ve read all of them many times (my favorite is the last one, and I cry every time).
I like to write about appreciating all of the beautiful little things that surround us, particularly in the face of grief, infant loss and mental health issues. If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable. Pretty sure books will be the hardest thing to let go of for this mama…My kids just love that special time with us every night, and honestly I look forward to it too! Every time Lakin or Addah read Riordan books, they become utterly immersed in the world inside the pages, emerging only to laughingly read a particularly witty section out loud to me. I will encourage the girls to read them all, for the amazing characters and story and the lessons learned within. I was one of those kids who spent my free time devouring books like my life depended on it! Peters is worn to the bone cooking homemade oatmeal, baking homemade bread, squeezing lemons for lemonade and peeling apples for applesauce.
