| GROVE CITY CAPTURES FIRST PAC BASEBALL TITLE Championship Game, Saturday, April 28 Grove City 7, Bethany 4 Grove City claimed its first ever PAC title, defeating two-time defending champion Bethany, 7-4, in Bethany, WV. Mike Kashurba (GRO) belted a three-run homer in the second inning that put Grove City ahead for good and southpaw Mike Suchan (GRO) hurled four-1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits and striking out three. Matt Kearney (GRO) picked up the save, setting the Bison down 1-2-3 in the ninth with two strikeouts. Bethany jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first before the Wolverines rallied with three runs in the second and two in the third. The Bison used a three-run fourth to cut the margin to 5-4. Grove City (designated the home team) added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kashurba, Nate Kauffman (GRO), Greg Grupp (GRO), Jeff Conaway (GRO) and Marc Paoletta (BET) each had two hits. Grove City, coming off a fourth-place tournament finish last year, fell in its other two PAC championship game appearances (vs. Bethany in 1999 and vs. Waynesburg in '98). The title-clinching victory extended the Wolverines' winning streak to eight games. |
