
2000 All-PAC Baseball Teams Named
|
Five members of the PAC champion Bethany Bison were named to the All-PAC First Team in a vote by the league's coaches on Monday, May 22. Bethany senior catcher Steve Opfermann (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) earned the PAC Most Valuable Player award for the second straight season after batting .386 with a conference-high 50 RBI and seven homers, which tied for tops in the league. Bison head coach Rick Carver, who led Bethany to a school-record 27 victories and its third all-time postseason appearance, was voted Coach of the Year. Waynesburg, the PAC runner-up, placed three on the first team and Grove City had two first-team placements. |

| BETHANY WINS PAC CROWN WITH SWEEP The Bethany Bison defended their PAC championship title Wednesday by sweeping the host Waynesburg Yellow Jackets by final scores of 13-10 and 11-6. The Bison collected their 24 runs on 36 hits led by CF Matt King, who went 7-for-11 with two home runs, six runs scored and six RBI. 3B Marc Paoletta had six hits in 10 at-bats and drove in six runs. C Steve Opfermann and 1B Mike Houck added five hits apiece. Justin Deem notched the victory in game one, surrendering just two earned runs on nine hits in six and one-third innings of work. Josh Molnar won the nightcap in relief of Pat Looman, who yielded four hits and one earned run in four and a third. Molnar, who shutdown the Jackets in the final two and two-thirds in game one, scattered six hits and gave up three earned runs in the final four and two-thirds of game two. Waynesburg appeared headed for its fourth tournament crown when it took a 9-3 lead after three frames in the first game. Bethany rallied with five runs in the fourth and three in the sixth and never trailed in the nightcap. The Bison cushioned a 7-6 lead in the second game with a four-run ninth. Bethany, led by head coach Rick Carver, won its first of three tournament titles in 1996. in ECAC semifinals The Bethany Bison (27-22) dropped a 9-0 decision to host Allentown (24-17) in the semifinals of the single-elimination ECAC South Region Tournament on Sunday, May 14. Allentown, bound for the NCAA playoffs, grabbed an 8-0 lead after four innings with two runs in the first, three in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth. The Bison committed six errors and were held to six hits in the nine-inning contest. Winners of back-to-back PAC titles, Bethany earned its third-ever postseason appearance after claiming a school-record 27 victories in the regular season.
