Community groups in the Bradley area of Nelson have until 12 noon Friday 27th June to apply for a grant of between ?100 and ?500.
It’s part of the Big Local programme – a Big Lottery funded initiative, which Bradley received funding from in 2012.
Application and guidance forms are available to download by clicking the link below, or to pick up from Nelson Town Hall. In July 2013, following a Participatory Budget Event, five projects were awarded Community Project funding. The school was keen to offer after school sports activities to children who normally didn’t engage in sport and to participate in tournaments with other local primary schools. SafeSpace was awarded ?500 to deliver a regular programme of in-house and community based activities during the summer (2013) to give their young people (16-25) opportunities to interact with one another and socialise within the wider community. In September 2013 staff, volunteers and the young people participated in an Eid celebration where the young people used the arts & crafts to decorate SafeSpace. SafeSpace have been working with the young people to develop Personal Development Plans.  A lot of the young people have used the art equipment to express emotions and enable support workers to understand current support needs. Christmas 2013 the choir performed for local elderly residents this has helped with community cohesion and the older people were given an opportunity to see the young people from the area in a different light. Through this funding the choir has been able to perform at more venues, has seen an increase in membership and it has been able to reduce the age limit to children aged 8 and over instead of 10 years. The Beacon children’s Centre was awarded ?500 to deliver weekly parent and toddler sessions at Hodge House Community Centre to enable under-5’s to share activities such as painting, singing, colouring and playing together, and to organise an educational trip for the group to share experiences. The sessions have been very well attended, averaging 13 adults and 10 children every week.  Out of this group a new young parents group has been created.

Staff  have been working in partnership with Lancashire Adult Learning to offer family learning sessions. An event was organised in November 2013 at the ACE Centre, Nelson.  96 children from Bradley’s three primary schools attended. Invited Guests from five different faiths (Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, Baha’a) worked with children in workshops to explain how music contributes to unity within their faith.  The guests played musical instruments and explained how lyrics are influential in promoting peace and harmony and provided an input into the origins of their faith and how it has inspired them to challenge prejudice and division.
Pupils have learnt how to use this understanding and experience to develop positive attitudes of greater respect and tolerance towards people who are different to themselves within school and in their local community.  By raising awareness of different faith groups, pupils will be better prepared for their high school experience.
