Winter has arrived and for most of us, that means the small amount of time we had in the early evening to squeeze in a ride has vanished. As appealing as low cost trainers may be, you should keep those two points in mind when setting out to purchase a trainer. Trainers that physically lock your back wheel and push the roller up to it and fix it in place eliminate this potential slip and provide a consistent force between your tyre and the roller This may reduce the realism of riding outdoors where your body weight and centre-of-mass does not influence the feel of your ride, although this may not be a significant factor when physically cycling on the trainer. The mechanism of your spinning back tyre on the roller can create quite a bit of noise, particularly if you have some kind of tread on your tyre. Direct-drive turbo trainers use your chain and not your back wheel to drive the trainer resistance unit. There is also one other type of trainer called a rim-drive trainer, but this is very rare (in fact there may be only one major company doing this type of trainer – Elite). Whether you choose a traditional roller or a direct-drive cycle trainer you have options when it comes to the technology that drives the resistance unit. We’ll work through the different technologies in terms of sophistication, although this being said it does not necessarily mean in terms of realism or ride performance because some of the simplest tech does provide one of the best rides.
Wind turbo trainers use the most straight forward system to provide resistance as you pedal. Wind trainers are generally seen as an entry-level option, being lower priced when compared to other types of trainer.
The LeMond trainer is however and exception, with other wind trainers being low cost and while their performance is good they may not be the choice for everyone. The progressive power curves generated by fluid trainers can be very realistic and comparable to power curves generated when cycling outdoors (see the graph above).
A fluid trainer is ideal for anyone wanting a road-like feel to their workout and anyone who wants a quiet (relative to other trainers) training session. Magnetic turbo trainers, or simply just mag trainers as they are known are seen as entry- to mid-level trainers. Magnetic turbo trainers work by spinning a metal (usually steel) disc relative to a magnetic disc(s) or vice versa. Spinning a metal disc within a magnetic field causes it to heat up, which can become hazardous. Mag trainers are very popular because you can set different resistance levels, meaning you can have an easy warm-up session or a tough hill like workout.
Like the standard mag trainers, electromagnetic trainers use a magnetic field to generate drag on a spinning metal disc.
The upper level of resistance is however limited because as you increase the electrical current to the electromagnet within the resistance unit the thin wires that carry the electricity heat up – get a simple explanation about electromagnets here. The video below is by Tacx for their i-Vortex turbo trainer that uses an electromagnetic resistance brake. One massive plus point with these trainers is the ability to control them digitally, which means you can not only use a handlebar control unit but you can quite often use a smart phone, tablet, or computer. Motor turbo trainers are not very common, in fact only the manufacturer Tacx current use this technology on their high-end trainers, the i-Genius, Ironman, and Bushido.
Ultimately the performance and experience will not differ much compared to an electromagnetic turbo trainer, however motor trainers have one feature that no other trainer can match. The main disadvantage of a motor trainer is the price, with only high-end trainers currently having this technology. Hybrid trainers aim to combine benefits of different technologies, such as smooth progressive power curves of a fluid trainer with the variable resistance of a magnetic trainer. Hybrid turbo trainers include the Elite Real Turbo Muin and the Elite Qubo Hydromag Turbo Trainer.
Elite have special Ritmo feet on some of their trainers (although they can be added to some of their other models) that allow the frame to bounce and move up and down and create a nice feel as you ride. Kurt Kinetic, who are a major brand in cycling, have a trainer called the Rock & Roll turbo trainer.
While dancing and swinging trainers add to the enjoyment of home training, things can move to another level when you can hook up cadence sensors, power meters and heart rate monitors and display all of your data on your laptop or tablet as you work out. On a basic level you can get special downloadable films of races that you can ride along to, some of the best (and toughest) are made by The Sufferfest. Electromagnetic and motor turbo trainers allow a computer (laptop, smart phone or tablet) to control your workout.
Companies such as CycleOps, Tacx, Elite, and Bkool all provide films and online experiences that you can interact with. Some trainers only work with their own software and apps, which is understandable but can also be a bit limiting. The Wahoo Kickr is one of the best trainers you can get, although its price point does mirror this. It is not just Tacx that brings this virtual world, Bkool are a newer company that have high-end trainers at a lower price, and their software is also pretty impressive as shown in the short video below. Tacx and Bkool have the software to generate 3D worlds to ride in, and the Wahoo Kickr can access the Bkool software.
If you are in the market for an entry-level trainer then the Tacx Blue Motion gets great reviews and costs around ?130, or the Minoura B60-R which is a steal at ?110.

A bicycle trainer (or a “trainer” as they are sometimes called) is a piece of equipment that makes it possible for you to ride your bicycle from a stationary position. They are used by cyclists who wish to warm up or cool down before or after a bicycle race or competition. And even more common, they are used by athletes of all different skill levels so they can ride their bikes inside when the weather conditions are less than ideal, when time is of the essence, or when the cyclist wishes to participate in other activities (such as watching TV, reading a book, or checking his or her email). On a personal note: Just about every cyclist in the city where I live (including myself) has a bicycle trainer in his or her home. There are a number of different types of bicycle trainers and each type operates in a different way.
There are, however, two major types of bicycle trainers, with several sub-types underneath these two. In the photo above, the cyclist on the left is riding a bike positioned on top of a roller bicycle trainer. Roller Bike Trainers are the most simply-designed bike trainers you will see, as they consist of nothing but a set of rollers that you ride your bike on top of. They provide a more realistic cycling experience because you have to maintain your balance, just as you would on a normal bike ride. The fact that you can shift your torso from side to side, like you would when on your regular bike, makes it feel like you aren’t riding in place, but that you are out there on the road.

Because there is a frame to hold your rear wheel in place, keeping your balance on a mechanical bike trainer is a piece of cake. They are relatively small (in comparison to Rollers) and won’t take up a lot of space in your home, basement or garage. Because the rear wheel is locked in place by the frame of the roller, you don’t get that back and forth “road-like” feel that you get on Roller Bike Trainers.
When it comes to Mechanical Bicycle Trainers, there are three main types that you will run across: Wind, Magnetic, and Fluid – each of which operates in a slightly different fashion.
Generally the least expensive of all the mechanical bicycle trainers, a wind bicycle trainer creates resistance by having the cyclist power a circular fan that blows air onto the wheel. Because these types of trainers are relatively primitive in their design, they are inexpensive, less-likely to break that some of the more complicated bicycle trainers, and they provide a relatively road-like ride.
The major drawbacks of wind bike trainers, however, are that they 1) create an incredible amount of noise… and 2) because the resistance to the wheel is created by wind and wind alone, the resistance is not as high as some cyclists would prefer. A magnetic bicycle trainer functions with the use of a magnetic flywheel on the back of the device. The benefits of magnetic bicycle trainers are that they are nearly silent to operate (which makes them ideal if you plan to ride your bike while watching TV or making phone calls), but the drawback is that only a certain amount of resistance can be added before the trainer is prone to break.
Fluid bicycle trains function as a sort of hybrid between magnetic bicycle trainers and a totally separate type of trainer that creates friction with the use of liquid resistance chambers. The major benefit of a fluid bike trainer is that as you begin to pedal faster and faster, the resistance to the rear wheel begins to progressively increase. There are centrifugal trainers, which like fluid trainers, get progressively more resistance as you increase your speed. There are special “virtual reality” bike trainers, which are hooked up to electronic video game-type systems that measure the cyclist’s speed, cadence, and other such measurements while at the same time placing the cyclist in a virtual world of some kind via the use of video screens, audio projections, etc. But for the most part, we’ve covered all the major types of bicycle trainers in this article.
It depends on you, your goals for the future, the type of cycling that you do, and how you plan to use your trainer. When it comes to whether or not you really need a bicycle trainer, I can’t make that call. My opinion, after trying out and reaching dozens of different trainers for myself, is that price is usually a good indication of just how good a bicycle trainer you are getting. I also have a 21 speed bike that I would like to use indoor with a Bicycle Trainer…Can I use the Gears to create resistance unlike the Exerciser. Most bicycle trainers are designed to be used with road bikes, just because that is the type of person who is probably going to actually want to ride a bike indoors – someone training for a race or event. This might seem like a really silly question, but when you use the skewer that came with your trainer for your back wheel do you leave it in when you take the bike off the trainer and ride on the road? Not only is it darker earlier, but winter storms, rain, snow, and sleet will keep a lot of us off the roads this winter. Trainer nirvana is had when you find a trainer that fits your budget, is bearable decibel wise, and reminds you of how great it is to ride your bike.

Much quieter than a wind trainer, magnetic trainers get their resistance from magnets instead of a fan working against the wind. Fluid trainers are considered progressive resistance, the faster you go, the higher the resistance becomes.
From 2007 to early 2013, Thien served as RoadBikeReview Site Manager, riding daily while putting various cycling products through its paces.
The skewer of your wheel is clamped to support arms (normally a spare skewer is supplied so you don’t damage your bikes skewer), and your tyre pushes against a roller. Also, in higher-end units the resistance within the trainer can be calculated based on your weight so that you get a more accurate feel. While each company will have their own exact designs the mechanism is pretty much the same across the board.
More sophisticated trainers that automatically control your resistance use body weight to calculate resistance values, which is something the fixed wheel frames cannot do as accurately. Using a special trainer tyre that is harder and very smooth reduces this noise, so this is another reason why you should consider removing your nice bike tyre and using a special trainer tyre instead.
You physically need to remove your back wheel and fix your folks to the trainer, and then wrap your chain over the cassette that comes with the trainer.
Don’t be fooled however, direct-drive trainers can still be pretty loud due to the resistance mechanism itself and also the noise of the chain on the cassette, but in theory they should be quieter than their counterparts. This is the Turbo Muin trainer by Elite, but all direct-drive trainers operate in a similar way (albeit using different resistance technologies).
The main one is that is can be a hassle to remove your back wheel every time you want to use it.
You keep your back wheel on so in this way it is comparable to the traditional type of trainer, but instead of pushing your back tyre against a roller there are two small wheels (casters) that push against the rim of your wheel.
The type of trainer refers to the mechanism by which the trainer (more specifically the resistance unit or brake) generates the resistance.
However, one brand in particular (LeMond) have pioneered high-end wind trainers with the aim of creating the most realistic riding experience you can get indoors. There is no way to vary the resistance other than cranking up through your bikes gears, which is not necessarily a major issue.
The reason for this, particularly in higher-end fluid trainers, is because the viscosity of the fluid is specifically engineered to create these accurate power curves.
As the liquid gets hotter its viscoelastic properties change, which means the power curve that was once very realistic may lose some of its realism.
The progressive resistance is a major selling point to serious cyclists, and if don’t want to annoy your other half, neighbours, or you just want to watch TV while you ride then a fluid trainer could be for you.
This is achieved by moving the spinning metal disc closer or further away from the magnetic disc(s).
They achieve this in a more sophisticated way however, using electromagnetic fields that can be incrementally varied by increasing the electrical current to the resistance unit. It is a good example of how the trainer hooks up with a computer, but it is not just Tacx that do this, other companies such as Elite, CycleOps, Bkool, Kurt Kinetic, Minoura and more also have apps and software for smart devices and computers.
It doesn’t stop their either, now you have the power to control things using fancy software you can run training programs that automatically vary your resistance, or even better you can enter GPS data of real rides so you can recreate the same experience indoors. As you can probably guess it uses a motor as a resistance mechanism, which without getting too technical (see here for a simple explanation) involves spinning a current carrying coil within a magnetic field.
This is their ability to apply torque in both directions, thus they can physically spin your bike wheel.
This is seen for example with new Elite Turbo Muin direct-drive trainer that combines fluid and magnetic technologies and aims to be one of the quietest and smoothest trainers available. I don’t mean you are falling of your bike but there are times when you get out of the saddle and throw your bike around, swaying and rotating side-to-side. Essentially the trainer uses standard fluid resistance (albeit a high-end fluid trainer) but it houses this resistance unit on a mobile frame. These videos can be used with or without a smart high-end trainer, but you do need a way to alter your trainer’s resistance to get the full benefits.
They sync up with your trainer, communicate with your sensors, and automatically vary your resistance accurately to GPS data of real cycling routes. Select a film of a real cycling route and your speed is automatically calibrated with the film speed, meaning pedal faster and more powerfully and you will travel faster on the road. However, others such as the Wahoo Kickr does not come with their own software but does hook up with other company’s software. Technology has reached a point where you can cycle in 3D computer environments against other people how are furiously pedalling in their own homes.
You’ll want a cool high-end turbo trainer such as a the Tacx i-Genius, a Wahoo Kickr, or for considerably less money the Bkool Pro trainer. This is where things are heading and is why new companies such as Zwift are entering the market and stirring up quite a storm. If you want the most realistic realistic (road-like) feel and are not concerned with how much noise a trainer makes then you can’t ignore the LeMond Revolution, which will set you back around ?400. The magnetic pull that this device creates causes resistance to your bicycle’s rear wheel and by adjusting this resistance, you can make the bicycle easier or more difficult to ride.
Fluid bike trainers are the most complex of the bicycle trainers you will likely run across and because of this, they are more prone to breakage that the types we’ve discussed previously. This road-like feel is what many cyclists working on a bicycle trainer want to feel, but fluid bicycle trainers do have their drawbacks. But for cyclists who are serious about what they do, are training for an upcoming race or tour, or simply want a way to ride their bike when the weather outside is less than perfect, then at least giving a bicycle trainer a try is a great idea.
But I’m willing to bet that there are more than a few people reading this article who have experience with bicycle trainers of various types and could weigh in on this subject.

When Katya first reached out to me and shared a bit of her life with me, I was really impressed with her background and how she left a traditional career path to pursue an endeavor her heart was stuck on (racing). She told me that over the last few years she's been doing a lot of self work and stumbled across Spirit Junkie by Gabrielle Bernstein. During my little photoshoot in NYC's Meatpacking District, locals and tourists alike kept pointing out my gear to their group. She works out with me, attends my events and has modeled for print ads (like the one above which actually never ran) and in magazines with me. After writing about Team SCA and their amazing adventure racing around the world, I was invited on a press trip to sail with them. Just to clarify, the Volvo Ocean Race is ongoing and was in full effect while I was on this press trip, but a few crew members at a time are allowed to come off the boat for a leg of the race and rest up. As I write this, there are some incredibly athletic and brave women sailing around the world as part of Team SCA.

If you can, try out whichever indoor trainer you’re considering at your local bike shop if possible before purchasing. If a trainer doesn’t feel like riding on the road, reminding you of how great it is to cycle, will you use it very much? A native of California, Thien also enjoys tinkering with photography and discovering new music.
They do this in two main ways, one is that your back tyre spins on a roller that is connected to a resistance unit or you remove your back wheel completely and fix your bike directly to the trainer and your chain powers the resistance unit.
So the main part of the trainer is the resistance unit (AKA resistance brake), which transfers your pedalling energy into measurable power output. Some designs have a mobile frame (support arms) and this means the weight of you and your bike push down on to the roller, just like it would on to the road if you were outside. One issue however is that if you get out of the saddle and transfer your body weight forward over your handlebars there could be the potential for slip between your tyre and the roller since the force between the two would be reduced. Some designs do not have a cassette and therefore you use your actual bike cassette, although the former way is a lot easier to set up.
Also direct-drive trainers should be more accurate in terms of power output because you are driving the trainer directly from your chain thus eliminating any tyre slip issues and loss of energy between the tyre and the roller. Some bikes are more difficult than others to do this, and if you are just looking to do a quick warm-up session it can be a drag. One of these caster wheels is linked up to a drive belt that in-turn is connected to the resistance unit.
This immediately makes them a lot quieter than wind trainers because spinning blade in fluid causes less noise than spinning it through air. Like wind trainers fluid trainers do not allow you to increase resistance via the trainer itself and you need to ramp up through the gears to get more resistance, which like wind trainers may not be a major issue for you. Whether this is noticeable or not is up for debate, but if you have spent a lot of money on a trainer because you want a quiet and realistic ride you want it to perform consistently. Mag trainers, and in particular the lower priced ones have linear power curves, which are not as realistic as the progressive power curves that wind and fluid trainers generate.
So, you pedal, your back wheel spins on a roller, this spins a metal disc (or your chain spins it if you have a direct-drive cycle trainer), and you generate a resistance. On cheaper (lower cost) trainers this resistance can be set on the braking unit itself before you start pedalling, or you can get a model with a handlebar mounted lever or knob that allows you to change the resistance as you cycle.
Because electromagnetic trainers use electricity they can be controlled digitally and in most cases wirelessly, making them a lot more practical to use. We’ll cover this more in the interactive trainers section, but there is now the ability to ride films and 3D virtual reality environments against other real-life riders in online races.
A torque is generated on the coil, which is accurately controlled via the amount of current applied to the rotating coil. This means if you are riding on a GPS course via your tablet or laptop you will get a realistic feel when cycling downhill (a maximum of a 5% decline is the current limit).
While the mechanism of spinning your back wheel is unique, other modern and high-end electromagnetic trainers can simulate the feel of downhill cycling by adjusting the resistance of the trainer and using a well-balanced flywheel. In this example the trainer uses a direct-drive mechanism (eliminating back tyre noise) and an oversized flywheel that spins in silicone oil (for smooth and quiet progressive resistance). The vast majority of trainers hold your bike relatively upright and have very limited mobility, but there are two trainers that address this issue. This frame tilts and rolls as the rider shifts their body weight and recreates the sprint mechanics of cycling very realistically. But there is a way to motivate you even more, and this can even take you to the point where it is darn right fun (if sweating your butt of can be fun?).
Also, go up an incline and the resistance of the trainer will automatically increase, adding to the realism. For example, the Wahoo Kickr can be used with the Bkool software as well as The Sufferfest videos and the popular TrainerRoad software. Basically you need an electromagnetic or a motor resistance trainer to get the most out of the virtual reality and the interactive software.
Zwift are aiming at bring 3D cycling to the masses and claim that just about any indoor bike trainer can be used in online races or at least in the online worlds.
When first learning how to use roller bike trainers, it is helpful to have something to hold on to so that you are less likely to ride off the sides of the rollers or fall to the ground while learning to balance. Mainly the fact that over time the trainer is prone to overheat, expand, and begin to leak.

So you ride your bike, watch the videos while you are cycling, and are kind of taken on a digital bike ride while at the same time exploring a new place through your television set.
I know what when I bought my bicycle trainer, the size of the thing was extremely important to me, as I didn’t want to have to store a really big thing in my tiny home.
In that country I’m not sure where you would be able to purchase any of these trainers. What you may have to do is, instead of trying to find a trainer that fits your bicycle, find a bicycle (or at the very least, a rear bicycle wheel) that fits on your bicycle trainer. I have seen that most trainers have power curves relating wheel rpm and resistance force to power. Specifically I’d like to be able to read a book propped up on a stand or on my handlebar bag while spinning in place. The magnetic resistance is a lot quieter than that of wind resistance and you will be able to watch TV while you are training, though you may have to turn up the volume a little. It's really amazing to see all the companies being born out of these kind of technological advancements. But seriously, it's hard to decide which one is my favorite prize because quite frankly, I own them all. We often take for granted the wonderful parks and historical sights within the region we live in. A few years ago The New York Times reported that some women were studio-hopping, taking more than 1 class a day to get their fix.

It's a 5 day adventure and my sources are telling me that there will be 130 of the most famous Zumba instructors onboard including Beto Perez himself. I used to think of her as just my mom without fully worshipping everything she's accomplished. They're competing in the Volvo Ocean Race, which is considered to be the toughest sailing race in the world. It's a long trip (9 months at sea!) and it's a tremendous challenge for these women, requiring massive teamwork and goal-setting. Of course, you have to train consistently, eat right and get plenty of sleep and hydration.

Speaking of sweet, Valentine's Day reared its rosy head and lured me into a chocolate shop last week. As I admired the glossy bonbons (they're literally lacquered with a sugary coating and some are topped with edible gold leaf) my mouth was watering insatiably.
Yoga's the one activity where even though you're not talking, you're still connecting with each other while on your mats. I'm asking everyone to snap a pic of their favorite outfit, fit look, accessory, or fitness fashion product. Either enjoy the “off-season”, losing all the fitness they’ve built up over the summer, or turn to an indoor trainer.
With wind trainers the resistance comes from a flywheel fan that spins up as you spin the cranks.
Meaning the resistance is steady and you could get on one and pedal up to 35-40mph without any change in resistance. Also, when you are not pedalling (or even when you have started to spin your back wheel) you need to replicate the momentum that you feel when you are on the open road. Other designs have rigid frames and the roller itself is pushed up and fixed against your tyre. The companies who make direct-drive trainers state that they are more efficient and accurate in terms of power transfer compared to the traditional spinning tyre trainers. These trainers have decent but limited resistance and do not offer some of the power metrics, realism, and training versatility of the roller and direct-drive trainers, but they are very easy to set up, quiet, and cause zero tyre wear. If the opinions of renowned blogger DC Rainmaker are to be believed (which they should) then YES they have. Also, this all happens in a fully enclosed water tight chamber (for obvious reasons) which further dampens the noise. You can get hybrid trainers that do allow varying resistance levels, and we’ll chat about them in a minute. To combat this issue some trainers add a fan to blow cold air into the resistance brake to keep the fluid at an optimal temperature, such as the CycleOps Jet Fluid Pro (which also looks pretty cool too, pun intended). However, if you are just looking for a way to get a good solid workout on your bike indoors then this may not (and probably won’t) bother you.
Instead of having 5 to 10 set resistance levels (like in standard mag trainers) you can control the resistance much more freely in almost infinitely small increments and using metrics such as % or Watts.
High-end trainers can however simulate high resistance equivalent to an incline (gradient) of 20% in some cases, so don’t worry if you think you won’t get a tough workout because you will.
Increasing the torque necessary to spin the coil means you increase the pedalling power needed in your legs. They use electromagnetic resistance to provide the wide and controllable resistance range which is something standard fluid trainers cannot.
Also, online communities and races exist where you can ride against real-life cyclists, which is a fantastic motivator and something that will get you on your bike more when you can’t get outside (and maybe even when you can). However, you can take advantage of the software using other trainers but the experience will not be the same because the resistance of your trainer will not be controlled via the software, thus when you ride up a hill you will not experience the true resistance. For a quieter option but still possessing a nice progressive resistance then some kind of fluid trainer will probably suit you best, such as the CycleOps Jet Fluid Pro or the new Elite Turbo Muin direct-drive trainer. Instead, it is a device that attaches to your regular bicycle so that you can ride your bike in a stationary position. If I were just on the bicycle and riding while staring at the wall in front of me, I probably wouldn’t last more than a few minutes.
But I think the biggest difference between a stationary bicycle and a bicycle trainer is that, like you pointed out, with a bicycle trainer you can ride in a stationary position on YOUR OWN BICYCLE. Let's face it, you cannot expect it to be silent, you are going to be riding a bike on it after all! The category continues to evolve and expand beyond the fitness tracker we're all familiar with. So I've put a little something together with a posh studio that's new to the area called Core3 Fitness. Hopefully they'll inspire you to get creative with something as simple and inexpensive as a pair of socks. So, I did for a little bit but then over time I became empowered by how great my mid-30's felt.
I can't perform magic tricks but I can wear Altchek MD's Daily Moisturizer made with SPF30, Ester C and Vitamin E. The plus side is less sweat and stink but the downside is that antiperspirants prevent the human body from doing it's job, which is to rid itself of toxins. I thought I'd share with you what I've got on my desk today: the March issue of People Style Watch Magazine and my new favorite toy, a Ball Wide Mouth Mason Jar with a fruit infuser lid! It's one of the easiest invitations to extend because no one has time--including me--to workout and see their friends unless it's happening simultaneously. In this case, it's imperative that your mats are side by side so you can visually bond with your friend. Remember, a loud trainer may be more hassle than it’s worth and you may end up not wanting to spend much time on it. Though, some well-engineered mag trainers will give you a varied workout by having some sort of ability to change the resistance, either a dial near the rear or a remote adjustment dial that can be fitted to your handlebar.
To replicate this most trainers incorporate a flywheel (usually a heavy spinning disc of metal).
This is why it is recommended that you use a proper trainer tyre that are specially designed to wear less, or you should use a spare (cheaper) tyre while training for prolonged periods.
This means the correlation between speed and power is not linear, instead at higher speeds the resistance is proportionally higher. They are however lower cost and because the fan can double as a flywheel some wind trainers are relatively light and portable, which are definite positives. Generally, fluid trainers are recognised as the quietest on the market so if this is a major selling factor for you then you should consider this kind of trainer. It should be noted that only virtual speeds will be estimated if using a lower-end trainer because you will need at least a power meter to get power data and an electromagnetic trainer if you want to feel realistic resistance as you ride on different terrains. To many cyclists, myself included, this is pretty important, because as you ride with a bicycle trainer, you are actually training to ride YOUR OWN bike. The trainer has a single adjustment and the progressive magnetic resistance increases smoothly as your speed increases. Without getting into the physics too much air resistance is more or less the friction you get on the blade as it moves through the air, and is influenced by speed and the cross-sectional area of the blade (also the shape and number of blades). Try picking out a location that interests you the most and try watching that video in conjunction with your time on the bicycle trainer. Going with a stationary bicycle might be better if you are cycling just to get in better shape. But using your own bike on a bicycle trainer is the way to go, I think, if you are training for an upcoming ride, race, tour, etc. I take a lot of criticism for being an outspoken Republican (I'm NOT anti-gay marriage or pro-life though), for wearing waist trainers and even for making a living off of social media. That being said, I was pretty excited to see which brands would be making their debut at TechStyleNYC!

You will be able to train whenever you want and wherever you want as it is easy to take your trainer with you where you go.
So I reached out to him to express my fandom and whadayaknow, he's the nicest guy on earth! While a trainer is great to get that workout in, it does not replace the skills learned by actually getting out on the road.
Even if you have rollers, it doesn’t teach you how to ride with traffic and be aware of your surroundings.
I say this seemingly obvious point because I know people who think they can do all their training for an event like the Seattle to Portland Bike Ride on an indoor trainer or in a Spin class. A trainer shouldn’t replace actual riding, but it is a great way to stay in shape over the winter so when Spring rolls around you are ready to get out and ride!
