Opened by Derek Chadbourne about 10 years ago, the focus at the Bike Joint has always been on repairs rather than sales. It's also worth noting that the Bike Joint does something all shops should do (but generally don't) in test riding all bikes before they return them to customers. The Bike Joint is open for repairs year-round, and seven days a week during spring and summer. Freshdaily is Canada's source for hyper-local arts, music, film, fashion, food and news coverage.

Cycling advocates are seeking a province-wide law that would require drivers to give cyclists at least 1 metre berth when passing, a rule that if obeyed would make cycling safer. Toronto cycling activists were disappointed Tuesday when the city’s executive committee decided to wait for the province before weighing in on a new rule that would require motorists to leave a metre of space between their car and a bike when passing. A day later, there was better news but no commitment from Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray. Noting that it has failed in the provincial legislature before, that safety law needs to be part of an overall review of Ontario’s cycling strategy, he told the Ontario Bike Summit in Toronto.
Murray is assembling an advisory committee to review and evaluate Ontario’s draft Cycling Strategy over the summer. There’s also a need to integrate transportation policies with broader planning initiatives. Ontario Share the Road founder Eleanor McMahon said Murray has asked her to join the advisory board. Jared Kolb, of Cycle Toronto, called Murray’s remarks encouraging because the provincial cycling strategy needs work.
Murray has an opportunity to provide leadership on the 1-metre passing law because Toronto City Council has abdicated its responsibility, Kolb said.
The Ontario NDP issued a press release Wednesday afternoon accusing the Liberal government of another delay in the provincial bike strategy, which was completed two years ago.
The parking authority started accepting proposals last year from companies interested in handling the overhaul. The equipment currently used was supplied by BIXI and Toronto needed a new provider in order to expand the program. Torontoa€™s Bike Share program is about to get a serious tune-up that may include selling it off and starting from scratch. New equipment is expected to hit streets this spring, and officials at the Toronto Parking Authority wona€™t release exact details until later this month.

The newer bikes were less costly to roll out, allowing Sobi to expand its coverage, and have been a hit with riders. The colourful stops include a rack to rest a bike on, a selection of tools to tune up and a pump to inflate flat tires. The pilot program plans to have set-ups at Bathurst, Davisville, Downsview, Dupont, Finch, Kipling, Keele, Kennedy, Pape, and Spadina stations. Don't get me wrong, the store can handle all sorts of bikes, but it really comes into its own when dealing with older bikes that most mechanics roll their eyes at. A cash-grab for most bike shops, the tune-up generally involves a quick once-over and results in only a marginal improvement to bike performance. What a bike sounds like on a repair stand with no weight or real pressure on the pedals and what it sounds like on the road can be two radically different things. Along with repair services, you'll find a locks, racks, tires and tubes and a variety of crucial and utilitarian accessories.
But a minority Liberal government needs support from the opposition parties to get the legislation passed.

Cycle Toronto wants $20 million, about 1 per cent of the provincial transportation budget, earmarked for bike infrastructure. In June, the Ontario Coroner released a report showing that 100 per cent of the cycling deaths he examined were preventable,” said the release.
But users can at least look forward to mobile payment technology a€” with the potential for Presto card integration a€” and the ability to lock bikes up near stations if theya€™re full, said Marie Casista, the parking authoritya€™s vice-president of real estate, development and marketing. None of whata€™s been received has been made public, but the authority set specific requirements for anyone looking to get involved, Casista said.

And because Toronto's commuter class tends to rely heavily on older bikes to avoid having to worry about theft all the time, there's actually quite the demand for a shop that specializes in these types of bikes, as evidenced by the inventory waiting to be attended to outside the store.
Chadbourne and his staff, on the other hand, take the path less travelled by offering a 32-step process, which includes all the stuff you'd expect plus things like freewheel maintenance, (re)positioning brake and gear levers at a 45 degree angle, and the application of lube to all bolts and cables.
Plus, the Bike Cover easily folds to a compact size and features a built-in bag for carrying and storage.
You simply lift the bike, hook the seat nose over the sturdy aluminum crossbar and you're set.
