In a compelling look at the city of Bedford-Stuyvesant, the incredible documentary Bed Stuy: Do or Die illuminates the reality of medical assistance on a volunteer basis. During the 80’s, the city of Bed-Stuy was so overrun with gang violence that ambulance response times could take up to an hour, leaving many people without medical assistance.
The film crew follows the Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps through the streets of the once gang run city, giving audiences a look at the brave men and women who give their time to help others. The ones above, made by Raf Simons in collaboration with sunglasses specialists Linda Farrow, make for a perfect base to build that Bed Stuy outfit upon.

However, if you are up for that fresh 1989 Bed Stuy style, it’s definitely do or die. This documentary offers an incredible look at what can happen when one person elicits change. Jackson, Martin Lawrence, Rosie Perez, Danny Aiello, John Torturro, and Giancarlo Esposito, Lee’s third feature film follows a number of Brooklyn Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood residents on a sweltering summer day, dealing with their individual yet somehow all racial bias and prejudice-based problems.
