Torresol Energy, a joint venture between Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s leading future energy company, and SENER,the leading Spanish engineering and construction firm, announced today the commissioning of its flagship 19.9MW Gemasolar Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plantin Seville, Spain.
The world’s first commercial-scale CSP plant featuring a central tower receiver with thermal storage capabilities has commenced supplying electricity to 25,000 homes in the Andalucia region of Spain. The innovative molten salt heat transfer technologydeployed at the Gemasolar greenfield independent power project helps avoid fluctuations in power supply through a system that is capable of 15 hours of energy production without sunlight. The Gemasolar plant comprises 2,650 heliostats (mirrors) that stretch approximately 185 hectares. SENER was responsible for providing the technology, the engineering detail design and part of the EPC and commissioning works of the plant. Frank Wouters, Director of Masdar Power, said: “The commissioning of the CSP plant marks another key milestone in the development and deployment of solar energy in Europe. Miguel Domingo, Solar Business Director of SENER, added: “The on-schedule and on-budget completion of the construction and commissioning of the Gemasolar plant is a milestone for SENER. Enrique Sendagorta, Chairman of Torresol Energy, said: “Gemasolar is a revolution in the CSP sector, as the standardization of this new technology will mean a real reduction in the investment costs for solar plants.
Torresol Energy’s Gemasolar project received EUR171 million financing through a transaction that involved several leading European financial institutions including Banco Popular, Banesto, ICO and the European Investment Bank.
SENER has already been nominated to represent Spain in the prestigious 2011 European Business Awards in the ‘Innovation’ category for the Gemasolar project’s molten salt storage system technology, which is considered revolutionary in the concentrated solar power sector. The final category Award winners will be announced in Barcelona in November 2011.
Torresol Energy also owns the Valle 1 and Valle 2 plants –currently under construction - that will employ parabolic trough technology and have a power generation capacity of 50MW each. Torresol Energy’s focus areas for developing, building and operating additional CSP plans include the US, Southern Europe, Middle East and North Africa. Torresol Energy, an alliance between the companies SENER and MASDAR, was created for the purpose of becoming a leader in the concentrated solar power (CSP) sector, with the goal of promoting technological development and the operation of large concentrated solar power plants around the world, especially in the so-called “solar belt”: Southern Europe, including Spain, Northern Africa, the Middle East and the Southwestern USA.
Every new Torresol Energy project will introduce and test new technologies with MASDAR and SENER’s support in order to make Concentrated Solar Power an economically competitive option and thus make it a real, viable, ecological and sustainable alternative to traditional energy.
Currently, the company has started the commercial operation of the Gemasolar plant, with 19.9 MW and central tower technology and heliostat field, located in Fuentes de Andalucia, in Seville.

SENER is a private engineering and technology group founded in Bilbao in 1956 which offers its clients cutting-edge technological solutions and which enjoys international recognition by virtue of its commitment to innovation, quality and its independence.
SENER engages in the specific activities of engineering, and also has industrial holdings in companies involved in Energy and Environment, as well as Aerospace. Masdar is Abu Dhabi’s multi-faceted initiative advancing the development, commercialisation and deployment of renewable and alternative energy technologies and solutions. Masdar Power is one of the five integrated business units of Abu Dhabi’s clean energy initiative - Masdar. Through its partnerships and investments in technology-relevant to utility-scale renewable energy operating assets, Masdar Power aims to spearhead breakthroughs in the field of solar PV, concentrated solar power, onshore  and offshore wind. For immediate release Over 40 years cloud cover has been steadily falling in Spain providing more sunshine but that is a threat as well as a bonus. Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)The heat is then used to drive conventional (usually steam) generators in much the same way as current power plants do.
This accordingly allows for generation of electricity 24 hours a day for many months of the year, even during the hours of darkness or poor daylight during winter.
The system is capable of reaching temperatures exceeding 900-degrees Centigrade at the central receiver located at the top of the tower. The technology developed by SENER includes state-of-the-art solutions such as the molten salt storage system and the receiver, which is able to absorb 95% of the radiation from the sun’s spectrum and transmit this energy to the molten salt compound that circulates within the receiver, which is then used to heat steam and operate the steam turbines. It also highlights Masdar’s commitment to partner with global industry leaders such as SENER and bring clean technology closer to the community. The company that commercially develops, manages construction, owns and operates CSP plants globally has been awarded a 25-year regulated tariff by the Spanish Government. Valle 1 will have the capability to generate 3,950 hours of electricity a year – equivalent to the average consumption of 40,000 households, or in other words, the entire city of Cadiz. In these areas, the company aims to promote tower plants with a central receiver tower system, or parabolic trough technology, based on the experience acquired in Spain and Abu Dhabi in the UAE.

In 2009, renewable energy represented 12.5 per cent of total energy generation in Spain, and this is expected to go up to 20 per cent by 2020.
In this regard, the protection of the environment for future generations is one of Torresol Energy's core commitments. At the same time, Torresol Energy is building two other plants, Valle 1 and Valle 2, two twin installations with cylindrical parabolic collector technology, 50 MW each one, located in San Jose del Valle, in the province of Cadiz. SENER has a workforce of more than 5,000 professionals and a turnover of 1,046 million Euros.
The company serves as a link between today’s fossil fuel economy and the energy economy of the future - developing the “greenprint” for how we will live and work tomorrow. Mandated to build and operate a portfolio of large scale renewable energy power projects that will enable Abu Dhabi achieve 7% of its total generation capacity from clean energy sources by 2020, it is implementing major projects such as the Shams-1 and Nour-1 solar power plants and Sir Bani Yas wind farm in the UAE, as well as international projects including the London Array, Torresol Energy’s  Gemasolar, Valle 1& 2 solar power plants in Spain and a wind farm in Seychelles. This support assures the Network’s continuation while we seek the means to ensure its long-term sustainability. The firm claims that its technology is the lowest cost with widest supply of available components. The tower technology uses molten salt as a heat transfer medium that reaches temperatures above 500 degrees Centigrade and allows delivering hotter and more pressurized steam to the turbine than the parabolic trough technology, which significantly increases the performance of the overall plant. The two plants at Cadiz in Spain will together help avoid the emission of 90,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
Backed by the stability and reputation of the Mubadala Development Company, an investment vehicle of the government of Abu Dhabi, Masdar is dedicated to the emirate’s long-term vision for the future of energy.
Concentrating solar …ACCIONA Windpower uses proprietary technology to design wind generators with different models adapted to all wind resource conditions. The team behind the study has not yet analysed the solar radiation data for 2011-2013 provided by the Spanish State Meteorological Agency, but the data from other European weather stations suggests that this brightening is still on the rise.
Since 2010 Spain has been the world leader in concentrated solar power, a method of directing the sun’s rays with mirrors to boil water or oil to drive turbines and generate electricity. By the end of 2012 more than 2,000 megawatts of concentrated solar power had been installed, the equivalent of two large conventional power stations.
The increase in sunshine is in line with scientific predictions for the northern Mediterranean coast and Italy, France and Greece are all threatened with desert conditions if the trend continues.
