Partial credit goes to the optional 402 mm carbon-ceramic brakes, but the C63 would be excellent even without them.
The seven-speed automatic dumps gears in a heartbeat, and even though this coupe is larger than the outgoing model, it feels small to drive. The Mercedes COMAND system remains less easy to use than their competitors, and the inside of the C-Class Coupe suffers from the current bewildering trend of designers making cars that look like they’ve got an iPad nailed to the dashboard.
The Red Sow, the Hammer – these are not the names of vehicles imbued with poise and delicacy. Producing 245 horsepower from a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, it had pep to make passes in the short clear sections on these winding Spanish roads, and was very Mercedes-like in its quiet operation with the driving settings set to Comfort. However, when pitted against what the C63 has under its hood, they might have met their match.
Additionally, the M3’s dual-clutch gearbox still has the edge in terms of speed (and BMW will sell you a manual if you so desire, praise be), and the Cadillac CTS might have an advantage over both in steering feel. In the effort to produce a car that looks more like their range-topping S-Class, Mercedes has stretched out the coupe version of the volume-selling C-Class by some 95 millimetres. 80 of those millimetres go into the wheelbase, and 60 are dispatched to work between the firewall and front axle, lengthening the nose of the car significantly.
