Garageband has a great system that allows you to not only create clearly defined sections within your song, but also record and edit exclusively within those sections before putting the whole project together again when you’re done.
When you create a new song in Garageband, you’ll have 8 bars to work with by default. Through the track editor you can double-tap on any keyboard track to open the piano roll editor. The reverb controls allow you to make your song sound as though it is being played in either a hall, canyon, or a room. The EQ controls provide you with the ability to adjust the bass, middle, and treble frequencies.
The filter controls allow you to filter resonance and you have the option to utilize the tilt controls. Image-Line Software recently released an update to FL Studio Mobile HD to allow the importing of custom instrument files from FL Studio for the PC. The inclusion of multitrack editing will make Soundbooth far more attractive to both video- and audio editors. Each track has its own Volume, Pan, Mute, and Solo controls, much like you find in Applea€™s GarageBand. Missing from the original Soundbooth was the ability to include more than one of these AutoCompose scores in a single projecta€”a real hindrance if you wanted to start your project with one flavor of music and then, after a change in a videoa€™s tone, end it with something else.

Though two days doesna€™t give you a lot of time to work with the program, ita€™s definitely something those who have an interest in audio should explore.
Whether you’re capturing a Smart Instrument performance or recording an instrument externally, when you hit that default 8 bar limit, the playhead will loop back to the start. Setting to automatic will allow your song to run as long as you want it to (up to a maximum of 320 bars).
Regions that ran to the end of a section will loops automatically if you increase the number of bars in it. At the Sections menu, tap and hold on the section you’d like to move and drag it into the desired position. The playhead will no longer loop back to the start of the current section when it hits the last bar. Once it's set to automatic, your entire file should be editable, assuming you have enough space on your device. Start a new song by tapping the Keyboard instrument, if that’s what you see — or by tapping the little Down arrow at the upper left of the screen, tapping the Plus sign, and choosing New Song. With the step-sequencer, you just record one measure of a beat or melody and then repeat it for as long as you need it to run. Also, the app will register 10 simultaneous touches so don’t worry about over-loading it with complex chords. The sequencer supports 99 tracks, so you have more than enough room to layer all the sounds you want. Here you can move around notes as well as drag your finger to select a group of notes to quantize them so you can fix any timing issues.
It really can’t get any easier to get professional sounding results with such limited knowledge. Designed for those who didna€™t require (or wouldna€™t comprehend) a full-blown digital audio workstation (DAW) application, Soundbooth erred on the side of ease-of-use. Not only does Soundbooth CS4 include multitrack editing and allow you to place multiple AutoComposed scores into a single project, it also offers some compelling new features. And, just like with GarageBand, you can insert volume keyframesa€”by inserting these keyframes and adjusting them up or down, you change the volume curve of each track individually. These are license-free, intelligently generated music tracks that you can alter by changing their volume, intensity, and some of their instrumental makeup (increase the presence of a synthesizer and de-emphasize a sound effect, for example).
This format places all the projecta€™s audio resources within a saved file and these files can be used by other compatible Adobe CS4 applications.
You can also choose Save As and save your mixed project as an AIFF, WAV, MP3, or .MOV file.
Within the MP3 Compression Options dialog box that appears when you chose to save the file in this format, you can preview the file before saving it. Soundbooth CS4 introduces a feature that will be a godsend to podcasters and others in similar fixesa€”automatic volume matching. Using a speech-to-text engine that Adobe declined to name, Soundbooth attempts to turn spoken words into text. I tested the feature with a couple of files from a recent podcast in which all speakers enunciated reasonably, and some of the resulting text was laughable. Even if the transcription is only 50-percent accurate (and those are the kind of results I saw in initial testing), ita€™s likely that youa€™ll find enough of the text youa€™re after to easily navigate through the file. With that serial number the beta will remain unlocked until the next version of the beta becomes available. The new Soundbooth beta maintains the applicationa€™s ease-of-use, making it appropriate for content creators who have had little experience with audio editors, while adding enough features to entice those with more-advanced audio editing needs.

Tap the tiny “+” icon in the upper right hand corner of the edit screen, and increase the number of bars to 20 (or even more, if the part of the song you want is towards the end). However, after watching a quick video tutorial on how to use the app (see video below) I was able to lay down a track with a custom beat, melody, and FX. The beat or melody is quantized to the step-grid, which means that everything will sound perfectly timed.
It offered an intuitive interface, solid noise filtering, and a handy AutoCompose feature for generating customized background music. Highlights include non-destructive editing, the ability to create snapshots (restore points) that you can later return to, automatic volume matching, MP3 compressions preview, and a speech-to-text feature that attempts to transcribe the contents of an audio track (or a selection within it) and then lets you navigate that track by choosing words within the transcript. From the File menua€™s New command, you now have the option to create not only a new empty audio file (which generates a mono or stereo documenta€”you choose whicha€”at the resolution of your choosing from 8- to 96Kbps) or a file from the contents of the clipboard, but also a new multitrack file.
You can change their length; as you do, their parts are arranged in a way that makes musical sensea€”with believable beginnings and endings, for instance. Just select a score, click the Add Score to Multitrack, and the selected score appears where youa€™ve parked the playhead.
With the file format comes non-destructive editing, meaning that all the original assets are left untouched. Just choose the bitrate youa€™d like to hear from the Bitrate popup menu and press the Play button. Click Match Volume, and the program analyses the files, attempting to make them play at approximately the same volume. You have the option to choose High (slower) or Medium (faster) transcription, and if you have multiple people speaking, the program will attempt to identify each speaker.
It does a decent job of ignoring a€?umsa€? and a€?ahs,a€? but if a person speaks quickly and jams words too close together, the transcription goes off the rails.
Also, anytime I wasn’t sure what button did what, I just brought up the in-app manual which clearly explained each feature.
But it lacked the kind of more-advanced featuresa€”multitrack editing and the ability to place more than one AutoComposed score in a projecta€”that audio pros or even advanced dabblers would desire. The resulting workspace contains a single empty stereo track with a large expanse of space below. Nor does it have an auto-ducking feature for dropping the volume of one track when the volume of another increases.) Each track within a multitrack file can have its own selection of up to five effects at once.
Should you wish to revert to the original asseta€”backtrack by issuing multiple Undo commands, for example, or go back in time after imposing snapshots on your project as you work on ita€”you can do so without altering your source files. For example, save your project as an AIFF file and you can choose a sample rate from 8- to 96Kbps and bitrate from 8- to 32 Bit Float.
In the few tests I conducted in my time with the beta, it works remarkably well when you use separate tracks, with each speaker having sole possession of their track. If you like, youa€™re welcome to double-click on mistakes in the transcription pane and type the correct words. You can add more tracks simply by dragging them into the main Editor window or by choosing Add Audio Track or Add Video track from the Tracks pop-up menu at the top of the Editor.
Soundbooth will take a minute or so to generate a preview and then play it for you using the bitrate youa€™ve chosen. When volume is radically different within a single tracka€”you have two speakers sharing one microphone and one is loud and the other quieta€”ita€™s not as effective.
Transcribing a file at the Medium setting works in just about real timea€”if you have 15 minutes of audio to transcribe, it takes about that long to create the transcript. Once in the Editor, you can drag tracks around to move them ahead or back in time in relation to the other tracks in the Editor. Ita€™s better, but therea€™s still a perceivable difference in volume, and the waveform display reflects this. While ita€™s not the kind of instant preview you get with Ambrosia Softwarea€™s WireTap Studio, ita€™s a nice enhancement. Fortunately, you can eyeball the waveform, select the quiet portions, and easily increase their volume with the tracka€™s volume control. I hope Adobe continues to tweak this feature as it will be incredibly valuable to a lot of people.
