The National Geographic Society aims to be an international leader for global conservation and environmental sustainability. Lightning is a huge cause of fires starting but there are also spontaneous combustion, sparks from rock falls and even a volcano erupting can all cause a wildfire starting.  These things might not always occur every day of the week but when they do, they can be terrible and cause a lot of damage including starting a wildfire. For the most part, arsonists are to blame; this and accidents are some of the other risks contributed with the breakouts of a wildfire. Some wildfires occur in forest areas and in some cases, dry land.  It can be very easy to start a fire up in these areas because they are many fuel sources to consume also. Across the world there have been thousand different wildfires that stretch vast and get out of control. There are many ways to help stop the wildfire from spreading.  Most fire fighters are going to deprive the fire of fuel by dousing land with water and clearing vegetation to help stop the fire from spreading further. They remove plants which may be diseased and stop insects which are harmful to the ecosystem.  It is strange as to how a wildfire can be in a way, something good for the parts of the ground which are dying because new plants and trees can be plants and grow there. Out of the many natural disasters we have, wild fires would be one that is very common, very difficult to fight, and maybe the most dangerous. However, in some occasions, these fires can be small and extinguished if the fire is caught quickly and dealt with quickly also.

Rarely, the fire can be slowed down completely or even contained but it does take a lot of work and many fire fighters also.
In recent years, wildfires have burned up to 9 million acres (3.6 million hectares) of land. This is the case for most wildfires and it is difficult to deal with the fire even if there are dozens of fire fighters working to stop it.
A wildfire however can move at great speeds, it can in fact be almost fourteen miles an hour; and it can burn home, brush, trees and even living people and animals alike. Heat eliminates moisture from any nearby fuel, warms the air around and prepares the fire path to accept the fire and make it burn with ease.
Lightning, burning campfires or cigarettes, hot winds, and even the sun can all provide sufficient heat to spark a wildfire.Although four out of five wildfires are started by people, nature is usually more than happy to help fan the flames.
Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Washington, Colorado, Oregon, and California experience some of the worst conflagrations in the U.S. In California wildfires are often made worse by the hot, dry Santa Ana winds, which can carry a spark for miles.Firefighters fight wildfires by depriving them of one or more of the fire triangle fundamentals. Traditional methods include water dousing and spraying fire retardants to extinguish existing fires.

Clearing vegetation to create firebreaks starves a fire of fuel and can help slow or contain it.
Firefighters also fight wildfires by deliberately starting fires in a process called controlled burning. These prescribed fires remove undergrowth, brush, and ground litter from a forest, depriving a wildfire of fuel.Although often harmful and destructive to humans, naturally occurring wildfires play an integral role in nature. They also act as a disinfectant, removing disease-ridden plants and harmful insects from a forest ecosystem. And by burning through thick canopies and brushy undergrowth, wildfires allow sunlight to reach the forest floor, enabling a new generation of seedlings to grow.
