In fall of 1997 the LSU AgCenter disaster mitigation and housing programs convened a conference in New Orleans called “Breaking the Housing Disaster Cycle.” Joe Wysocki, then program leader for CSREES housing education, mentioned that he was working with a North Central Region (NCR) committee called EDEN. Currently I have the privilege of managing a comprehensive disaster mitigation program that for the first time engages 4-H youth.
I am most active in the EDEN Exec and international committees, and now taking greater interest in the youth activities and disaster activation and communication planning arenas. Disasters bring more than physical devastation, they also bring stress and related mental and physical illness.  And though hosted by the Drought NEIL the information presented by Sherry Nelson, LCSW and Missouri Extension Specialist is applicable to folks impacted by disasters other than drought. Steve Cain, EDEN Homeland Security Project Director is chairing the NVOAD (National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) Drought and Wildfire Taskforce.

The effects of a disaster may have long lasting impacts on one’s mental health well-being, whether the person was directly impacted by the disaster or not. Disasters are complex events with multifaceted causes and hence disaster management needs comprehensive, multidisciplinary training to deal with both complexity and change. Major shifts have occurred in the way in which disasters are considered, resulting from an increasing awareness of problems internationally along with an identified need for solutions.

You will develop interpersonal skills for effective team-working, group leadership, and organisational management including the assessment of priorities, allocation of resources and co-ordination of activities through simulation experience. Opportunities for study on residential field courses will include the use of field simulations either in Finland or in the UK, and the option to examine environmental hazards and evaluate management strategies on overseas residential field courses.
Building a Workforce of Leaders in Preparedness and Disaster ManagementThe Master of Science in Emergency Management (MSEM) degree, which is offered totally online, is designed to educate individuals to plan and coordinate emergency management efforts. Our students come from varying disciplines, some with little to no experience or training in emergency management.
The task-force project introduced our Extension agents to parish floodplain administrators (FPAs), and introduced both our agents and FPAs to their emergency managers and occasionally to local voluntary organizations active in disasters.
The importance of disaster risk reduction has continued to grow both within governmental and non-governmental organisations. The course will ensure a sound working knowledge and experience with one of the mostly widely used GIS platforms, extensively used by many planning authorities, GOs and NGOs, and you will develop valuable skills in the acquisition and processing of spatial datasets with a wide variety of disaster management applications, along with the ability to visualise and depict spatial information. This will provide you with the experience to assess risks and vulnerabilities from desk-based research, laboratory and field situations, consider hazard management and disaster risk reduction strategies, and critically review the concept of resilience along with techniques for its development. Preparation for the Master’s project or dissertation will commence in the Spring term.
