A fire in the home can be devastating, but many of the incidents Avon Fire & Rescue Service is called to could have been avoided. To find out if you qualify for a free Home Fire Safety Visit, please contact Avon Fire & Rescue Service on 0117 926 2061.
Next time you visit your local doctor’s surgery, keep a look out for a Carers Pack – every GP surgery in Central Bedfordshire now has a copy of the information pack for carers. For their parents, it means things like not having two pairs of all-weather shoes, no home contents insurance, struggling to keep the house warm and not being able to decorate or replace worn out furniture.
As well as responding to incidents when they do happen, Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service places great emphasis on working with you to prevent emergencies from happening in the first place. As part of the Southern Leighton Buzzard Urban Extension that commenced in 2003, over the last eight years 1088 homes have been built. The roadshow will be visiting locations in Central Bedfordshire including Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, Houghton Regis, Flitwick and Biggleswade.
We will visit you at home to offer advice on how to make your home safe and where appropriate fit a smoke alarm for free. We target our visits in areas and situations where we know there is a higher risk of fire, including the homes of older or disabled people, but anyone living in South Wales can request a home fire safety visit.

If you are concerned that your home may be at risk of fire or know someone who you think needs our help then please arrange a visit. In order to reduce the incidence of accidental dwelling fires within its area, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has embarked upon an ambitious programme of Home Fire Safety Checks (HFSCs).
Firefighters and community fire safety staff from the Service will now visit domestic properties to provide home fire safety advice and will supply and install smoke alarms free of charge.
Make a fire action plan so that everyone in your house knows how to escape in the event of fire. Home Fire Safety Visits are offered to the most vulnerable in the community and are based on the level of risk identified by staff from Avon Fire & Rescue Service. Following the assessment you will be provided with fire safety advice and a visit to your home may be arranged. Improvements to Blue Waters Woodland included the creation of new pathways to improve access to and around the site, woodland management to encourage biodiversity and wildlife to the area, and the installation of seating, way markers and interpretation boards to make the area more engaging for visitors.
Practical measures you can put in place to reduce the risk of fire in your home will be offered, including how you and your family can escape safely from a fire, closing all doors at night and switching off electrical items which don’t need to be left on. These checks are the cornerstone of the proactive role the Service is now adopting in its drive to reduce the deaths and injuries that are caused by accidental fires.

The visits are carried out by firefighters or a member of the service’s team of specially trained staff. For more information on misconnection visit the Connect Right website or contact your water company. Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service knows how important it is for people to stay safe and warm in winter, and is offering advice and help to local residents.
The most important advice from the Fire and Rescue Service at any time of year is to have a working smoke alarm and a fire escape plan for the home both of which could save life. Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service offers a free Home Fire Safety Check to all residents, giving advice on Fire Safety and Electrical Safety.
If you have a working chimney these should be cleaned and serviced at least once a year to reduce the risk of fire.
