Voluntourism doesn't have to involve overseas travel - In this photo, FEMA volunteers stack sandbags in Iowa. For this reason, most places will require a fee of some kind to cover your accommodation and food while you are volunteering. But the outpouring of volunteers from the affected communities and around the country who pulled together after the storm to do anything from running shelters, to feeding the displaced, to mucking and gutting homes revealed the heart of a caring nation. There is still much more work to be done in Hurricane Sandy-affected areas – especially in the hardest-hit communities in New Jersey and New York – and all the volunteers deserve kudos for stepping up to help their neighbors in need. In all fairness, if you plan on committing some serious time to a place, and you will not be earning an “income” during your stay, it is possible to find a place to volunteer for free or a low cost program.
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is proud to stand beside these volunteers as we join in the effort to assist the storm’s survivors continue their recovery journey.
Whatever you choose to call them, consider these volunteer gigs to be a fulfilling and positive way to impact & experience the cultures and people you will encounter on your journey. Expect to put in some serious online hours researching the place you want to go and the opportunities available in whatever area your chosen volunteer destination.

Many places will require a minimum commitment of six months to a year in return for reducing or waiving any volunteer fees – which can be a bit risky if you have not been to the site in person to assess the situation & living conditions personally. FEMA volunteers Joe Cole, 20, Saul Korzenecki, 24, and Kerri Anne Robinson, 20, in Hoboken. Cole is part of group of 240 volunteers that arrived in Trenton today and then were dispatched across the state. FEMA Corps is currently accepting applications for Corps Members to begin serving in Summer 2016!The application deadline is April 1st, 2016, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time.
Some refer to the latter of these gigs as Volunteer Vacations, which may be appropriate for those on shorter term travel routes. If a place can be found online, their administration should also be involved in Social Media– if they have a Facebook, Twitter or Blog, start interacting and developing connections with previous and current volunteers as soon as possible. The second, and more important resource, will be actually communicating with other people who have already or who are currently volunteering in the area you wish to travel.

Members are based at one of five regional campuses and travel to complete service projects throughout those regions. To be considered for FEMA Corps, you must first apply to AmeriCorps NCCC.
A team of volunteers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) arrived in Hoboken today to initiate a community relations effort, as residents and businesses pick up the pieces following Hurricane Sandy. You can teach (not referring to TEFL job or a gig where you get paid – as that is not volunteering), work with local orphanages, put your agriculture or ecological sustainability skills to use, help build homes, etc. Given the prevalence and severity of disasters and other hazards, FEMA is looking for ways to diversify and fortify its existing disaster workforce structure. In a joint venture between AmeriCorps and FEMA, an 11-person team is in the Mile Square City distributing flyers and information to residents on how to register with the Federal agency.
