FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
As one of their largest expenditures people usually have a ton of questions before makingany decisions , below are a few of the most commonplace ones…
Unless you’re a properly trained contractor, most roofing tasks really should not be undertaken yourself. In addition always remember that a large number of manufacturers of products used in the roof repair will not warranty those items unless a licensed roofing contractor performs the task. The other thing to keep in mind is that working on a roof can be very dangerous, so is it really worth risking your health in order to save money?
It would be really good if we could give you a simple answer to that question! But there actually is no single answer that fits all for every question like that. There are many different products available and each and every one will have its own merits and faults. To determine which is the ideal roof for you, you really should have a contractor come and check out your roof and they can make suggestions based on what they observe, your roof design, the environment you reside in and, of course, your budget.
It definitely depends on the kind of roof you currently have and what surveys are required. Also, keep in mind that we will be working outside in the elements, so if the weather isn’t good and we cannot work on a number of days then this will add more time to the job. A small home may take around a week or so, while larger industrial jobs could be anything from several weeks to a number of months. Just ensure your roofing company keeps you updated and you really should be fine.
Considering that your roof is continuously subjected to the weather, this means your roof is will deteriorate over time. The pace at which it deteriorates will be dependent on a variety of factors. Those include; the grade of the initial materials that were used as well as the craftsmanship, the amount of abuse it will have to take from the weather, how well the roof is maintained and the style of the roof. Most roofing professionals will estimate around 20 years for a well-built and properly maintained roof, but obviously that can never be promised due to the above factors. Our advice is to always keep your roof well maintained and get regular inspections to be sure it lasts as long as possible.
You shouldn’t ever pressure wash your roof, as you take the risk of taking off any covering minerals that have been added to offer cover from the elements. On top of that, you really should steer clear of chlorine-based bleach cleaning products since they can easily also diminish the lifespan of your roof. When you speak with your roof cleaning specialist, tell them to use an EPA-approved algaecide/fungicide to clean your roof. That will get rid of the unattractive algae and yellowing without damaging the tile or shingles.

Homeowner maintenance includes cleaning the leaves and particles from the roof’s valleys and rain gutters. Debris in the valleys can cause water to wick under the shingles and cause damage to the interior of the roof. Clogged rain seamless gutters can cause water to recede under the shingles on the eaves and cause damage, despite the roof product.
The very best way to protect your roof is to stay off it. Likewise, seasonal modifications in the weather are usually the most devastating forces. A dripping roofing system can harm ceilings, walls and furnishings. To safeguard structures and their contents from water damage, roofing professionals repair work and set up roofings made from tar or asphalt and gravel; rubber or thermoplastic; metal; or shingles made of asphalt, slate, fiberglass, wood, tile, or other product.
There are two kinds of roofs: flat and pitched (sloped). Most industrial, industrial and home buildings have flat or somewhat sloping roofings. The majority of houses have pitched roofs. Some roofing contractors deal with both types; others specialize. The majority of flat roofs are covered with numerous layers of materials. Roofing professionals first put a layer of insulation on the roof deck.
Next, they set up partially overlapping layers of roof felt, a fabric saturated in bitumen, over the surface area. Roofing contractors utilize a mop to spread out hot bitumen over the surface and under the next layer. This seals the seams and makes the surface watertight. Roofers repeat these actions to develop the desired number of layers, called plies. To use shingles, roofing professionals first lay, cut, and tack 3-foot strips of roofing felt lengthwise over the whole roofing. Then, beginning with the bottom edge, they staple or nail overlapping rows of shingles to the roofing system. Employees measure and cut the felt and shingles to fit intersecting roof surfaces and to fit around vent pipes and chimneys.
Finally, roofing professionals cover exposed nailheads with roofing cement or caulking to prevent water leakage. Roofing professionals who use tile, metal shingles or shakes follow a similar process. Some roofers also water-proof and damp-proof masonry and concrete walls and floors. To prepare surface areas for waterproofing, they hammer and chisel away rough areas, or remove them with a rubbing brick, before applying a coat of liquid waterproofing substance.
When damp-proofing, they generally spray a bitumen-based coating on interior or exterior surface areas. Asphalt is the most frequently used roof product. Asphalt items include shingles, roll-roofing, built-up roofing, and modified bitumen membranes. Asphalt shingles are normally the most common and cost-effective choice for residential roofing. They come in a range of colors, shapes and textures.
Laminated shingles include more than one layer of tabs to provide additional thickness. Interlocking shingles are used to provide higher wind resistance. And large individual shingles typically can be found in rectangular and hexagonal shapes. Roll-roofing items are generally utilized in property applications, mostly for underlayments and flashings. They are available in four various types of material: smooth-surfaced, saturated felt, specialty-eaves flashings, and mineral-surfaced.
Smooth-surfaced items are used primarily as flashing to seal the roofing system at intersections and protrusions, and for offering extra deck protection at the roofing system’s eaves and valleys. Saturated felt is used as an underlayment between the roof deck and the roof material. Specialty-eaves flashings are usually utilized in climates where ice dams and water backups prevail.
BUR is utilized on flat and low-sloped roofings and includes several layers of bitumen and ply sheets. Parts of a BUR system consist of the roofing system deck, a vapor retarder, insulation, membrane, and emerging material. A customized bitumen-membrane assembly consists of continuous plies of saturated felts, covered felts, materials or mats in between which alternate layers of bitumen are applied, either emerged or unsurfaced.
