FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Being one of their largest investments people typically have a bunch of questions prior to makingany decisions , below are some of the more common ones…
Unless you’re a properly trained roofing professional, most roofing work shouldn’t be carried out yourself. Also keep in mind that a large number of manufacturers of products utilized in the repair of the roof won’t warranty those items unless a licensed roofing contractor carries out the task. Something else to always remember is that working on a roof could be very hazardous, so is it really worth risking your health for you to save money?
It would be great if we were able to give you a straight forward answer to this question! However there really is no one answer that fits all for each question like that. There are several different products readily available and each and every one has its own benefits and disadvantages. To figure out which is the best roof for your home, you should have a professional come and examine your roof and they can make suggestions according to what they have seen, the type of roof you have, the environment you live in and, of course, your budget.
It definitely depends upon the type of roof you have and what inspections are required. Also, keep in mind that we will be working outside in the elements, so if the weather isn’t good and we cannot work on a number of days then this will definitely add more time to the task. A small home may take around a week or so, whereas much larger commercial projects might be anything from a few weeks to a number of months. Just make sure your roofing contractor keeps you updated and you should be fine.
Since your roof is continually exposed to the outside elements, this means your roof is going to break down over time. The pace at which it breaks down will depend upon a number of variables. Those include; the quality of the original materials that were used along with the workmanship, the amount of abuse it will have to take from the elements, how well the roof is preserved and the design of the roof. Most roofing contractors will estimate around 20 years for a well-built and well-maintained roof, but that can never be promised as a result of the above issues. Our suggestion is to always keep your roof well maintained and get regular roof inspections to make sure it lasts as long as possible.
You should never pressure-wash your roof, as you take the risk of taking off any covering minerals that have been added to give shielding from the elements. Aside from that, you should stay clear of chlorine-based bleach cleaning products since they could also diminish the life-span of your roof. When you speak with your roof cleaning expert, ask them to use an EPA-approved algaecide/fungicide to clean your roof. That will get rid of the unsightly algae and staining without ruining the tile or shingles.

Homeowner maintenance includes cleaning the leaves and particles from the roofing system’s valleys and rain gutters. Debris in the valleys can trigger water to wick under the shingles and trigger damage to the interior of the roofing. Clogged gutter can cause water to flow back under the shingles on the eaves and cause damage, despite the roof material.
The very best way to preserve your roofing system is to stay off it. Likewise, seasonal changes in the weather condition are generally the most harmful forces. A leaking roofing system can damage ceilings, walls and furnishings. To protect buildings and their contents from water damage, roofing contractors repair work and install roofs made of tar or asphalt and gravel; rubber or thermoplastic; metal; or shingles made from asphalt, slate, fiberglass, wood, tile, or other material.
There are two types of roofing systems: flat and pitched (sloped). Many industrial, industrial and house buildings have flat or slightly sloping roofs. A lot of houses have actually pitched roofing systems. Some roofing contractors deal with both types; others specialize. Many flat roofing systems are covered with several layers of materials. Roofing professionals initially put a layer of insulation on the roof deck.
Next, they set up partially overlapping layers of roof felt, a fabric saturated in bitumen, over the surface area. Roofers utilize a mop to spread hot bitumen over the surface area and under the next layer. This seals the seams and makes the surface area watertight. Roofing professionals duplicate these steps to develop the preferred variety of layers, called plies. To use shingles, roofers initially lay, cut, and tack 3-foot strips of roof felt lengthwise over the whole roofing system. Then, starting from the bottom edge, they staple or nail overlapping rows of shingles to the roof. Workers procedure and cut the felt and shingles to fit converging roofing surfaces and to fit around vent pipelines and chimneys.
Lastly, roofing professionals cover exposed nailheads with roofing cement or caulking to prevent water leakage. Roofing professionals who utilize tile, metal shingles or shakes follow a similar process. Some roofers likewise water-proof and damp-proof masonry and concrete walls and floors. To prepare surfaces for waterproofing, they hammer and chisel away rough areas, or eliminate them with a rubbing brick, prior to applying a coat of liquid waterproofing compound.
When damp-proofing, they normally spray a bitumen-based finish on interior or outside surfaces. Asphalt is the most frequently used roof product. Asphalt products include shingles, roll-roofing, built-up roof, and modified bitumen membranes. Asphalt shingles are typically the most common and economical choice for property roofing. They are available in a range of colors, shapes and textures.
Laminated shingles include more than one layer of tabs to supply additional density. Interlocking shingles are used to supply higher wind resistance. And big specific shingles typically come in rectangle-shaped and hexagonal shapes. Roll-roofing items are usually used in property applications, primarily for underlayments and flashings. They are available in 4 different kinds of material: smooth-surfaced, saturated felt, specialty-eaves flashings, and mineral-surfaced.
Smooth-surfaced products are used mainly as flashing to seal the roofing system at crossways and protrusions, and for providing additional deck protection at the roofing’s eaves and valleys. Saturated felt is utilized as an underlayment between the roofing system deck and the roof product. Specialty-eaves flashings are normally used in climates where ice dams and water backups are typical.
BUR is utilized on flat and low-sloped roofing systems and includes multiple layers of bitumen and ply sheets. Components of a BUR system include the roofing deck, a vapor retarder, insulation, membrane, and appearing material. A customized bitumen-membrane assembly includes constant plies of saturated felts, layered felts, fabrics or mats in between which alternate layers of bitumen are applied, either emerged or unsurfaced.
