What I’ve written is incomplete, however, without one piece of the puzzle: an automatic investment plan. Arguably, putting your investments on autopilot is the most important thing you can do for your finances.
If you don’t want to automate the rest of your finances—if you prefer to set aside a few hours a month to pay bills, transfer money to savings, and balance your checkbook, that’s fine. How many millionaires do you know who have become wealthy by investing in savings accounts?
The technique of buying a fixed amount of an investment at regular intervals is known as dollar cost averaging (as opposed to investing a big chunk of money at irregular times). If you were to buy $1,000 of a mutual fund when it’s per-share price is $100, you would own 10 shares. If, however, you invest $100 a month for ten months and the fund’s price varies from $80 to $120, you may end up slightly more or less than 10 shares depending on the stocks prices.
I’ve recommended paying yourself first as a strategy for building cash savings for emergencies, and you can do the same thing with your investments. Your employer may make this easy by offering a 401(k) or similar retirement plan to which you can contribute through automatic payroll deductions. Otherwise, you can start a Roth IRA and begin making regular contributions on paydays in addition to cash you transfer to a savings account.
You may be able to hunker down and fight the urge to splurge at the mall or bet on a hot stock tip…for a while.
Carl Richards, author of The Behavior Gap, knows this, and in a recent New York Times blog post offers the same advice I’m giving now: Use automation prevent your emotions from influencing your financial decisions. Nearly every mutual fund company and online stock brokerage makes it easy to set up automatic investing in mutual funds, whether it’s in an IRA or nonretirement account. You set up an automatic transfer from your bank account to your investment account (for example, on pay day). You specify which mutual fund(s) to invest in and your money is automatically invested at the current price. The key to keeping automatic investing affordable is to invest directly with a mutual fund company (for example, buy Vanugard funds through Vanguard or Fidelity funds through Fidelity) to avoid paying a trade commission each month.
Mutual funds make automated investing easy because you can invest any amount in a mutual fund regardless of the current price.
In most cases, however, with individual stocks and exchange-traded-funds, you must purchase whole shares.
A final alternative to both direct mutual fund investing and ShareBuilder is Betterment, the new radically simple investing account that lets you make autopilot investments in entire stock and bond markets. Money Under 30 has everything you need to know about money, written by real people who've been there. Do banks such as Wells Fargo and BoA charge montly fees on these automatic investment debits?
How about if you did max the Roth where would one look at another type of investment that I could have easy access to. I am surprised by the number of articles I read that never mention dividend reinvestment plans available through major companies with very long history of increased dividends.
I’m beginning to question the value of dollar-cost averaging and started an experiment to see how regular interval investing differs from all at once investing at the beginning of the year.
And, I do have automated investments: Money is deducted from paycheck to 401(k) automatic in each pay period, and I am contributing three times a month to my ROTH IRAs with T. I max my Roth, then go directly to a non-retirement account since my employer doesn’t match 401k contributions.
I was looking at the chart… Are you saying if you have access to a 401K (or the like) but your job ins’t matching the funds, just skip it and do a Roth IRA?
Right, if your company doesn’t match 401(k) contributions, I think a Roth IRA is a better bet. Some of you might be curious to see how a H1B visa denial letter would look like, if H1B visa have been refused for an applicant. I was selected in H1B 2015 Lottery and my petition was approved and I also got stamped in Feb 2016.Later my sponsor got in to some legal trouble and the consulate Revoked my Visa and logged my Status in Admin Processing.
Now couple of months back I was interviewed by US Based Product development firm and few days back after consulting with their attorney, they decided to File Cap-Exempt H1 for me and I was happy to know that and started process with them like Signing employment form and submitting docs for Background verification. I am not at all convinced with their reason here.I any normal case of H1 Transfer there are always 2 petitions that exists, one with current employer and other with the new employer who filed for Transfer-Than how is my case different here?. My new employer told me to keep checking my status at USCIS website and when it changes to Revoke let us know and we will file your papers. Can you please guide me here if what my new employer is telling is correct or they are just making me go round and round. Your Petitioner does not appear to be either able or willing to provide Qualifying employment in United states in accordance with appropriate laws and regulations. I am not so sure as USCIS has revoked the petition on the basis of consulate’s guidance, which implies that petition should never have been approved in first place. Also, though I got to know about my visa denial only when I raised a query to Customer care([email protected]), but I have neither received the visa denial mail nor there is any visa denial stamp on my passport.
Also, it is a well traveled path for applicants to enter on H-4 and then move to H-1, F1 etc. What will happen to my undergoing H1 review in case I m quitting my Employer and going back on H4.

You can write a letter to consulate telling that you are withdrawing your stamping request and they can close the 221g case.
Recently, Getting Interview dates in US consulates in India are really difficult because of lack of staffs.
So I wanted to check with you if it is advisable to go to Singapore or Thailand for stamping and what are the pros & cons with that.
I have seen that option being discussed on the forum but don’t know of anyone who has actually tried that. Cons: Even though the consulate says you can appear, they issue 221g asking you to reappear in home country.
1)Will his H1b transfer approves or will it get rejected as desi consultancy paystubs are not produced for transfer? 3) Any risk of H1B transfer denial and getting out of status and losing H1b as he already submitted resignation for desi consultancy? And consulate has sent to me an approval letter but they said i must pay a refundable fee of 1550$ as sufficient garantee during my stay in us and i wil get them back once i arrived. Mindlessly putting away part of your paycheck each week keeps your plan on track even when you get distracted by life. As the market climbs, the notion is you will end up buying more shares at a lower price than if you invested in a lump sum. Get it into the market and don’t worry about spreading it around and definitely don’t try to time the market or wait for the right time.
Most will waive minimum investment requirements when you enroll in an automatic investment plan. Alternatively, some online brokers (TD Ameritrade*, for one) offer hundreds of no-transaction-fee mutual funds in which you can automatically invest with no extra fees.
So if you want to automatically invest $100 in ABC stock with a current price of $11, you can only buy nine shares and will have a $1 left over. ShareBuilder’s entire model is built around automatic investing plans, and for $4 a month you can invest a fixed amount in individual stocks as well as mutual funds (you can hold fractional shares). Investing with Betterment is about as simple as opening a bank account, and I think it’s a perfectly acceptable strategy for hands-off investors. I just started a blog about a month ago about money management so I’ve been reading through a lot of similar blogs. My employer offers both so I put my contribution in my Roth 401k and then they give me my match in a traditional 401k.
My primary retirement investment account is in a Roth IRA though and I like using Vanguard index funds.
Automated investing is a great tool to make sure your retirement is on track and you don’t divert those funds into non-essential purchases. I just went through setting my retirement plan up with an advisor and have money automatically going away every month. Obviously, this is a simplification and many of you may have good reasons for deviating from this path (for example: wanting to invest more for the short term than for retirement because of upcoming expenses or volatile income).
I pay on my gains, but my industry is volatile so it’s nice to have access if things ever hit bottom without penalty.
For most young investors the tax strategy of a Roth is better and you have more control over investments,so you can pick mutual funds with lower expenses.
Now I am in school and if I get hired to a different position, I will no longer be union so I can get the match. Even to attend a privately operated high school, middle school or elementary school, many young students need funding to pay costly tuition and other educational expenses. Below is a sample denial letter received from US consulate after the applicant submitted documents for given 221(g) query.
Is my new employer and their attorney correct in any way to suggest me to wait for petition revoke and than file transfer?
From Petitioner perspective, does it required to do any followup on this to get this done quickly? After reading the posts in this trail, Do I really need to resign from my current company (US based company and I am on leave right now) before going for H4 interview? Since I have not received any letter from consulate stating about my visa denial, what should I answer in DS160 about the question of previous Visa denial? Visa denial question in DS form refers to visa stamping denial, which has already happened in your case. I already have a letter from my Employer stating, I will be on leave till the visa issues are resolved. Will there be any complications if my current employer do the COS(an US company) as the case is still pending with USCIS. COS can take 2-4 months but actual times would depend upon the processing time at your processing center.

I want to start a 401K plan but I do not what were to invest my contributions or if I should invest at all.
I really like the content you’re sharing on here and it would be great if we could get in touch to share information, especially on building blogs and generating traffic.
This assumes that the investor wants to take advantage of all available tax-advantaged retirement accounts before investing in a taxable account. The average rate for a 60-month new-car loan also dropped, falling 7 basis points, to 6.88 percent. It is always advisable to apply for funding first through the Federal Student Aid program (FAFSA) and the Federal PLUS Loan plan.Whenever applying for private student loans, pay close attention to fees and interest rates involved. I am wondering if it will get approved though as your last approval was revoked by consular officer.
However, as you cannot work on H-4 you either need to take leave of absence or sabbatical etc.
Based upon the documents and information you have, you will have to determine who has a better chance. Now he got new offer with Kforce consulting firm and so he started H1B transfer with Kforce.
The second sense is the max amount you can legally contribute to your 401k as defined by the IRS.
They got about $300 out of me by the time I figured this out so I have stopped putting in money. A loan offered with a reasonable or low interest rate but high fees may actually cost more than one with no fees and a high interest rate.
After few months when I tried enquiring about my case, I got to know, my visa has been denied n petition is sent to USCIS for review on January 4, 2016. Also can you have two Roths when you are married and my wife currenlty just goes to school.
Add more the 401(k) or a combination of the 401(k) and a taxable account that you can use for expenses before you retire. The Volt will retail for $41,000, but a federal tax credit of $7,500 will lower the price to $33,500. Please avoid posting private or confidential information, and also keep in mind that anything you post may be disclosed, published, transmitted or reused.
Fees of three to four percent will be about equal to an interest rate that is one percent higher. USCIS has still not received my petition and there is no change in my status(Petition still shows as Approved). All of these contributions will have tax incentives, which is why you max them out before getting a brokerage account (which requires you to pay tax on your gains). If it was revoked by consular officer for fraud then you should expect a NOID during your H1 transfer.
