If you suspect a vaginal yeast infection in a child, the best course of action is to have the youngster examined by a doctor. A yeast infection occurs when the body is not able to keep the levels of yeast in check, and an overgrowth occurs.
Yeast thrives in a wet environment, which means that babies and young children who are in diapers or using disposable training pants should be changed often.

It’s important to remember that it takes time to treat and eradicate an chronic yeast infection. Some of the information on this page won’t seem new to those of you who have been struggling with a yeast infection for months or even several years. However, if you are new to the idea of a yeast infection, I hope that you find yourself inspired enough to take action.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to buy into the idea that you can take a single product or supplement and expect long lasting results. Over time, you’re immune system will become suppressed, you’ll become increasingly reactive to many different foods, your digestive enzyme output will become adversely affected, and your beginning to lose the battle. One of the things I’ve found most alarming about chronic Candida yeast infections, is the lack of information traditional medical doctors have in this area. These four factors may not seem like a big deal, but combine them together and you’re ultimately attacking your body on a daily basis, destroying friendly bacteria and damaging your immune system’s ability to recover from any infection. Young children unfortunately do receive antibiotics from their medical doctor all too often, and in my clinical experience because they were weaned very early and placed on a cow’s milk formula. If a baby contracts a Candida yeast infection from her mother, she hasn’t got sufficient immune power to fight it off. In adults, when Candida enters the body and prepares to take over, you’ll usually find that it starts out in the digestive tract. As the Candida makes its way through your body, it moves from place to place, creating a systemic infection or overgrowth. Because the Candida organism is anaerobic (not requiring oxygen), it has plenty of excellent places to hide in and on your body. As Candida travels throughout your body, it creates toxins and those toxins create an unfriendly environment.
It can take some time, but by infiltrating as much of your body as possible, the Candida organism and its by-products will have created an atmosphere that guarantees their survival.
As you can now begin to understand, a chronic yeast infection slowly but surely occurs due to a rather complex chain of events which taking place over a prolonged period time. It is important to understand that you don’t need to and certainly won’t be able to “kill all the Candida” in your body, Candida albicans is a normally occurring organism found in a healthy person’s digestive tract but is kept in check by beneficial bacteria and a strong immune response.
Unfortunately, if you’ve been fighting a yeast infection for a while, it may seem like you’re allergic to just about everything, and getting worse by the year, and we’re not just talking about food allergies either.
You also have cravings because Candida is consuming the glucose (sugar) those foods create before your body can, causing you to have low blood sugar levels, also known as hypoglycemia.
During the evening hours, when you’re sleeping and ultimately not eating, yeast will continue to search your body for glucose as their primary food source. With a reduction in adrenal and thyroid energy, you will begin to experience decreased metabolism levels as well as poor regulation of your body’s core temperature. Many years ago when I began to specialize in treating patients with Candida yeast infections in my naturopathic clinic, I found that approximately two thirds of the individuals I met who were suffering from Candida were women. Progesterone is a hormone very important to the body; so having it consumed by Candida albicans is particularly unhelpful and can affect your body on many different levels. Because your body’s hormonal system works to continually balance your body, high progesterone, and higher amounts of Candida therefore, can also arise from low oestrogen levels in the blood, and this can occur when the receptors that tell your body to create estrogen are blocked by what we call “xenoestrogens”, or chemicals that mimic estrogen’s activity. It is a common occurrence for many women to have a vaginal yeast infection right before they menstruate each month, and this occurs is primarily because their estrogen levels naturally drop, allowing progesterone levels to rise.
There are many pharmaceutical drugs and dietary supplements available today that can assist in eradicating a Candida yeast infection, including drugs such as Diflucan and Nystatin, as well as many different natural medicines like caprylic acid. These Candida metabolic by-products and toxins can travel throughout your body and can achieve considerably more damage by being free in your bloodstream than they do once they’re absorbed into specific cells. I have known of many patients over the years that did not follow these recommendations and made big changes overnight to their diet, they took antifungal supplements at high dosages because they wanted to “kill the Candida fast”. Many patients I’ve seen tend to overlook the important role of digestive enzymes when it comes to eradicating a yeast infection. When enzyme production is impaired, proteins, fats and carbohydrates will become insufficiently broken down to their smallest components, robbing the body’s trillions of cells of the fuel they require to generate sufficient energy to supply your needs.
Besides digestion, your body requires enzymes to assist in a wide variety of bodily functions. As if it couldn’t get worse, this reduced pancreatic enzyme output affects you in yet another way. To make matters even worse, when tartaric acid and acetaldehyde combine, they prevent your brain from getting the energy it needs to survive. The Candida yeast organism also creates a chemical known as arabinitol, produced from dietary carbohydrates such as arabinose when yeasts are rapidly growing in the low oxygen (anaerobic) environment of the small intestine.
Once arabinose begins to build up in your body, it will start to cause what we call “cross-linking”, because arabinose is responsible for linking different intracellular proteins and enzymes together.
I have certainly seen improvements in young people with autistic spectrum disorders who started early on an anti-candida program.
When I first started treating patients with chronic yeast infections more than twenty years ago, I was still ignorant in terms of just how tough it can be to eradicate Candida, and like most practitioners, believed that all it took was a two or three week dietary program with a few good supplements. I knew it was possible, and the best thing to do was to just keep on treating yeast infection patient after patient and perfect my methods over a prolonged period of time, never being satisfied like most all practitioners with “average” results. Once you have a better understanding of what yeast infections actually are, we’ll talk about diagnosing and identifying your yeast infection.
Many people are often misdiagnosed, because the majority of conventional medical doctors simply don’t believe that the Candida organism can actually take over your immune system and invade your body, even though there is an incredible amount of scientific research to say there is.
If you don’t fall into one of those severe or extreme categories, though, you are much more likely to be diagnosed as having “irritable bowel syndrome”. You are probably looking at that list of symptoms and are wondering just how you can confirm that what you’re feeling isn’t actually chronic fatigue syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome, or any of a number of other ailments, but is actually a Candida yeast infection. Other tests I cover in the Candida Crusher include, but certainly aren’t limited to, the itch test, the smell test, and you will find extensive information on various well recognized laboratory tests including blood, saliva, urine, and stool analysis. When treating an acute yeast infection – one that is easily diagnosed, like vaginal thrush, jock itch, or athlete’s foot, your doctor may prescribe an oral medication or a topical cream. I’ve always found it quite unbelievable that doctors never tell their patients about foods that encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria and that discourage yeast infections. Nystatin generally has fewer side effects than other medications because it is not absorbed by your digestive system. Candida will look for anything it can find to fuel itself and the foods you eat are one of the biggest contributing factors to its ability to thrive. If antibiotics have been prescribed for another medical concern, a yeast infection may occur. Level of discomfort is not an indication of the seriousness of the infection; it's possible to have a severe infection with only a bit of mild discomfort. Symptoms like low thyroid function, poor energy levels, problems with concentration, multiple chemical and food allergies, decreased sex drive, psoriasis and many unexplained skin rashes, many and varied bowel problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, and even sinus infections can be related to Candida.
While the vaginal area is the perfect environment for Candida to grow and thrive, the way it grows in the body has nothing to do with whether you are a male or a female. Babies don’t generally develop yeast issues because of antibiotics, their yeast imbalances are generally passed onto them from their mother. This is an even more common scenario if the child is born by way of a C-section; but she can otherwise develop a yeast infection from vaginal delivery in her mother has a vaginal yeast infection, or from nursing, sharing food products, or even being kissed by those who have a chronic yeast infection.
Young children with compromised immune systems are not only susceptible to a myriad of chronic health conditions, but the child may also be at a higher risk for developing conditions listed on the autism spectrum.
As the fungal organism grows, it produces a chemical called acetaldehyde, something you might be familiar with if you’ve ever had a hangover. Just like a herpes virus, Candida makes it a lot more difficult for your immune system to arrest and deal with it, and it also makes it more difficult for medications – natural or not – to find and kill it. As a result, even the areas of your body that were once well oxygenated become depleted and affected by your immune system’s response to candida and what we call candida metabolites, or toxins such as gliotoxin and mannan, which are produced after Candida dies. When Candida has overgrown in your body, even a small reduction in your Candida population can go a long way towards improving your condition, and just by reducing some of the Candida, your immune system will be able to make a temporary recovery.
When this occurs, not only can the yeast organism escape, but microscopic particles of undigested food ends up in your bloodstream, challenging your immune system as well.
As your immune system becomes increasingly weaker, you will be less able to deal with many different chemicals and other toxins in your environment. As a matter of fact, those with a chronic Candida overgrowth will desire or even crave sugars and carbohydrates because of the chemical acetaldehyde the yeast organism creates in your body.
But when you have a chronic Candida yeast infection or if you have a nutritional deficiency of the vitamins B3, B6 or B12, the minerals selenium, iron, molybdenum or the amino acid glutamine, levels of acetaldehyde steadily build up, and as acetaldehyde levels increase in the body’s tissues and toxicity develops. They consume blood sugar, leaving your body lacking this valuable nutrient it constantly needs for energy.
Candida also binds itself to the estrogen hormone, disallowing your body from using it properly. While they do work, these measures when used alone won’t completely eradicate a systemic yeast overgrowth, and I’ll explain why. When you take medications that are designed to wipe out Candida albicans, its natural defense is to attempt to multiply.
With the added toxic burden from a chronic Candida yeast infection, your liver can quickly become overloaded. They can invade many organs, even your brain, because they are free to travel wherever the circulation will take them.
These are the patients who are more likely to be the ones who became so incredibly sick from their toxic Candida overload, that they literally couldn’t take any products for a very long time to eradicate their yeast infection. Nearly every person I have seen in my clinic who has a chronic Candida yeast infection will experience an impaired ability of their stomach (and particularly of their pancreas) to operate at full functional capacity, this creates an inability of these digestive organs to produce sufficient enzymes for their metabolism needs.
In addition, poor digestion allows bacteria and yeasts to thrive in an intestinal environment rich in partially broken down foods.
As we mentioned, your cells can only create minimal levels of energy without pancreatic enzymes, so your body must now begin to turn to the process of fermenting sugar anaerobically (without oxygen) to make up for this loss.
Brain fog sets in, and over a period of time, you may even start to feel depressed, hyperactive, or fuzzy headed. Because this sugar is found in sweet apples, grapes, and different kinds of pears, you may now understand why sweet fruits are not the best of foods to consume when you commence the Candida Crusher Program, in particular those who have a severe case of a yeast infection. In doing so, it can cause you to develop critical vitamin and nutrient deficiencies, particularly those relating to lipoic acid, biotin, and vitamin B6. But antifungal treatment cannot unfortunately undo any of the crosslinks once they have been formulated and been inside your body for many years, and treatment can only hope to prevent any further formation of new cross-links by reducing the production of yeast induced arabinose.
But the truth is that Candida can and does cause multiple abnormalities in the biochemistry of your body, including being responsible for levels of various toxins in your body, blocking proper cell oxygenation, impairing healing, reducing immune function and more. How wrong I was, and while a very few people were helped, this common approach was clearly not capable of wiping out a chronic yeast infection in a person who had developed their illness over several years. I’ve given you a lot of information to ponder over, but there is significantly more to know about Candida and how it really impacts your body than what I’ve written here.
In the Candida Crusher book I’ll delve much deeper into the several root causes of Candida, what it is, and how it impacts your body. Now that you understand how systemic Candida can hide in different tissues and organs, it may not surprise you to find out that a lot of your symptoms are merely mimicking other kinds of commonly diagnosed diseases.
There are dozens of other conditions that may be indicative of a yeast infection that I haven’t mentioned. While we have already established that women have it worse than men up to two thirds of the time, that’s not to say that men can’t get yeast infections.
I can tell you, after 25 years of study and clinical experience, that Candida can and does grow in the bodies of individuals who do not have cancer, hepatitis or AIDS.

Women who have severe or recurring infections are often given a drug known as Fluconazole, but it’s odd to continue taking a medication week after week without really searching for the underlying cause of your recurring infections.
Earlier we talked about Candida growing resistant to medications, and these drugs are definitely amongst those the yeast organism can defend itself against.

I’ve seen many hundreds of cases of young children who developed chronic yeast infections after having been prescribed multiple rounds of antibiotics after ear, nose are throat or digestive infections, which occurred after being weaned onto a cow’s milk formula to soon, a food which in many instances will be found to be a highly allergenic food to a very young child with an immature immune system. The acetaldehyde can cause damage to certain parts of your digestive system, creating microscopically tiny holes in your small intestine through which Candida can escape into your body. This Candida interference further weakens your immune system, which is ultimately responsible for getting rid of fungal overgrowth, bacteria, parasites, and many different toxic residues, so you end up fighting an uphill battle, a battle you’ll end up losing one day. In many chronic cases however, it may struggle to gain control, and even if it does, the Candida yeast infection will ultimately begin to take over again. These food particles have not been fully digested and haven’t been properly absorbed, which will mean that your body’s cells won’t have access to the nutrition they supply. Now you can begin to understand why those with a chronic yeast infection can feel so tired and washed out. The levels of progesterone and estrogen in your body balance each other, so the lower your estrogen levels, the higher your progesterone, and Candida can even attack estrogen in order to feed off of the higher levels of progesterone. This is because the effect that pharmaceutical drugs and supplements have on Candida is similar to the effect antibiotics have on bacteria in that, over time, the yeast organism can in fact become stronger, more resistant and even partially immune to the effects of many of these treatments.
Candida can basically hibernate until it’s safe to come out again, and this is one of the main reasons why, after taking a supplement or medication, you do feel better and think that your problem is solved but eventually regress and begin to feel bad again. When your liver’s detoxification capabilities become even slightly impaired, it becomes increasingly more difficult to filter out the toxins which they end up in your circulation, and ultimately inside your cells, the last place they belong. Eventually they make you feel tired, sluggish, sick, and sometimes you may even feel wasted, spaced out or even drunk at times.
When the enzymatic production of your body becomes compromised in any way, your body’s needs aren’t being fully met and your body will not be able to draw the energy it requires from these vital components. This fermentation process causes extra lactic acid to enter your blood stream, and your body. While your body doesn’t make it, Candida does make it as a byproduct, and it can cause your muscles to weaken.

When your body has developed too much tartaric acid because of a chronic yeast infection, it can’t metabolize and properly use malic acid for energy production.
Candida isn’t the only organism in your body that can cause such abnormalities, but it can surely contribute to chronic ill health. In short, doctors are trained to look for only the most severe cases of systemic Candida, the most dangerous kinds of yeast infections that really do attack those who are compromised.

Yet for some reason, they choose to most always treat the presenting symptoms in their offices rather than running any extra test such as a stool culture for Candida to determine if the patient is suffering with a chronic yeast infection, rather than a superficial one. They belong there along with varying levels of other organisms in your body, particularly the beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, which keep them in check. When doctors prescribed them for bacterial infections, they were less likely to prescribe them incorrectly and they were more restrained in their use, especially in the early days.
Unless you’re eating organic meats, you will also be consuming some of the antibiotic residues the animals you are eating have absorbed into their muscle tissue. Their compromised young bodies just don’t have the ability to adequately deal with the onslaught of many different toxins, including a Candida yeast infection. In order to gain excellent and lasting results, you have to do those things that will favorably alter your body’s internal environment as a whole, while at the same time boosting your body’s immune function to it’s highest level. It’s almost like being on a yo-yo diet, the more times you lose weight and gain weight, the harder it becomes to lose weight and to keep it off each succeeding time.
Your immune system will begin to attack these food particles as being foreign and begin to set up antibody (immunity) versus antigen (foreign food particles) reactions, eventually these reactions form the basis of food allergies, and your will start to become allergic to the foods you love and consume the most – all because your body is over-reacting to foods that are entering your bloodstream too soon. Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of “incurable” people with chronic yeast infections who have been struggling for long periods of time with these kinds of food, inhalant, chemical and environmental allergies.
An interesting point worth mentioning is that most of the women I have seen over the years with chronic yeast infections tend to be aged from their early 20’s to early mid 40’s.
Bearing that in mind, it’s not surprising to see how adrenal fatigue can also contribute to the development of a Candida yeast infection, as the lower levels of beta estrogen produced by fatigued adrenal glands will contribute to higher progesterone levels as well. It doesn’t make a lot of sense, but the more potent the antifungal supplement you try to use, and for longer periods of time you use it, the more effectively Candida may ultimately mutate.
Your tests may not show a Candida infection, but the yeast is waiting in other areas of your body, mutating and multiplying and waiting for the right opportunity to come along so that it can once again proliferate.
When the environment is safe again, the yeast can reactivate and continue living in your body.
While your ultimate goal is to eradicate a Candida yeast infection in your body, doing so too quickly or incorrectly may cause even far higher levels of toxins to be released into your blood. The result is that you become increasingly fatigued and toxic, and just like the toxic Candida metabolites we spoke of previously, poor enzyme levels are just another way that Candida impairs your body’s function.
Now we have yet another toxin your body can’t get rid of, and as a result, your body becomes increasingly inflamed and painful. And if your body doesn’t have enough access to malic acid because of the higher tartaric acid levels, it won’t be able to process glucose properly.
Once these abnormal proteins accumulate inside your cells, they can also potentially lead to the development of autoimmune disorders and have even been linked to certain forms of cancer. And don’t panic, the fact that it can set you up to develop a form of cancer does not mean it necessarily will.
This type of Candidiasis can impact your liver, lungs, kidneys, and even your brain, and can seriously complicate the health of an already severely ill individual.

Normal your spit is clear and floats at the top, though I should caution you that a negative spit test doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have a problem with yeast. What many people aren’t aware of is that it is not possible to “cure” a yeast infection with an antifungal drug, all you do is reduce the yeast population and create side-effects while trying to achieve this. The notable Australian naturopath William Vayda was recommending their patients trial Nystatin, and found it to be superior to most other natural treatments which were currently available at the time in the 1970’s to treat yeast infections. While you focused on healthy foods in the first stage, the second stage will help you to remove any foods that may be causing you more severe food allergy symptoms. It’s no great loss, because the small price you pay will pay big dividends, your health will be the best it’s ever been and the quality of your entire life will change for the better as a consequence.
I generally recommend taking one probiotic in the morning (on waking) and one in the evening (on going to bed), or when you aren’t taking any other supplements or eating foods. You may have bought some book on Candida treatment, but the results weren’t what you were expecting.

The same goes for getting rid of a Candida yeast infection permanently, so it’s better to do it right the first time. If you suddenly develop food allergies, chances are you have leaky gut syndrome – and, of naturally, a Candida yeast infection. Like antibiotics, in the beginning your supplement or drug may certainly work, but the space it has cleared in your digestive system well end up becoming a breeding ground over time for increasingly resistant strains of Candida spores and other microorganisms.
This ability to create spores, hide, and avoid the immune system is one of the main reasons why those suffering from Candida can spend years and years with on-again-off-again symptoms.
Your liver may be incapable of dealing with such an influx of toxins and you start to feel a bit sick, ranging from a mild amount of discomfort right through to vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and severe brain fog.
With insufficient malic acid, your body will be forced to oxidize glucose into lactic acid, and this means that you develop considerably less energy you could have created, and in addition you end up with inflammation and discomfort, just like you do with pancreatic insufficiency we previously spoke about. A chronic yeast infection can assist in setting up an environment where cancer can flourish in the body, but it is not solely responsible for causing cancer. You could have dysbiosis, or a bacterial problem, and not necessarily have a yeast infection.
Once you stop the drugs, the yeast not only grows back again, but the yeast becomes increasingly resistant to the effects of the drug in order to survive. If you have a very mild case of Candida, like a simple toe nail yeast infection, you may be able to skip this, but if you have a true problem with overgrowth, this step is absolutely critical! If you are one of those people I see who are moving through your Candida Crusher Program much too quickly and have a tendency to be very impatient, or you have had a chronic yeast infection for an extended period of time, these allergic reaction can in fact be potentially quite severe. Some people who come to see with their yeast infection bring boxes or even several plastic bags full of products, the symptom are still there and they end up becoming even more disillusioned after parting with all that cash because they generally get to the point where they realize that just by taking all those pills, the cure just doesn’t seem to be forthcoming. But more importantly, doctors treat the symptoms are rarely if ever even worry about addressing any underlying causes of their patient’s yeast infection.

Over time, the weakening of your adrenal glands will have a direct impact on the performance of your thyroid, because cortisol is required to stimulate the release of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) from the pituitary gland, allows the conversion of the inactive thyroid hormone (T4) in its active form (T3) and even plays a role in allowing T3 into your body’s trillions of cells, powering them up. A good understanding of this die-off process, and how you can avoid such aggravations, will pay huge dividends, because the more careful and slow you go about the introduction of your yeast elimination plan and dietary supplement use, the less severe the die off will be.
