When to get pregnant on birth control

Sign up for our weekly column on sex, life, love, kicking ass, and using better birth control. Once a month, see what our medical experts have to say about birth control, health, sex, science, and more. Women under 30 years old are incredibly fertile—their ability to get pregnant is at its peak.
All reversible birth control methods will help prevent pregnancy while you’re using them, but none have long-lasting effects on your ability to get pregnant when you stop. Let’s look, for example, at how long it takes for women to get pregnant when they quit the Pill compared to when they quit non-hormonal fertility awareness methods (FAM, sometimes called natural family planning).
If you had sex with a new partner and didn’t use a condom, you can still protect yourself by getting tested. The following chart shows the chance of getting pregnant for women who use different methods of birth control. If you become pregnant while using IMPLANON, you have a slightly higher chance that the pregnancy will be ectopic (occurring outside the womb) than do women who do not use birth control.
We are lucky to live in a day and age where we have access to so many different types of birth control.
The Depo Provera shot is known to stay in your body longer than other birth control methods. If you decide you want to get pregnant while on Depo Provera, it is important to try to plan ahead and stop your injections as soon as possible. Getting pregnant after IUD is different than getting pregnant after the Depo Provera shot or the birth control pill.

Your ovulation should return to normal shortly after the device has been removed.  If you use condoms as your birth control method, you are lucky because condoms contain no hormones at all. That’s why women who use the Pill but accidentally forget to take it for a few days can get pregnant that month.
A big study of over 2,000 women who quit the Pill after using it for an average of seven years found that 21% were pregnant in one month and 79% were pregnant in a year. Luckily, getting tested for Chlamydia or Gonorrhea is easy and painless: you just pee in a cup. Each box on the chart contains a list of birth control methods that are similar in effectiveness. If you and your health care provider cannot feel the IMPLANON implant, use a non-hormonal birth control method (such as condoms) until your health care provider confirms that the implant is in place. Women can delay pregnancy for as long as they want or need to, with a simple daily pill, a shot 4 times a year, or a small device implanted in their body.
When you decide that you are ready to conceive and stop taking the birth control pill, your body will usually quickly expel the hormones from the birth control pills within a few days.
Some women get pregnant within a few weeks of stopping the pill, and for some women, it might take a few months. While the birth control pill’s hormones only last a few days, the hormones from the Depo Provera shot are continuously administered by the shot. Women who stopped using FAM had very similar rates of pregnancy, with 20-25% pregnant in one month and 80% pregnant in a year. You may need special tests to check that the implant is in place or to help find the implant when it is time to take it out.

Call your health care provider right way if you think you are pregnant or have unexplained lower stomach (abdominal) pain.
If you are going off the pill, and don’t get pregnant within 6 to 9 months, it might be a good idea to see your doctor to make sure there is not an underlying problem.
In other words, women who quit the Pill get pregnant just as fast as other women, even if they’ve used the Pill for years. There may be a delay of up to two months after stopping the implant and up to six months after stopping the shot, but this varies from person to person, and most women get pregnant soon after stopping these methods.
If you test positive, you can tell a partner he or she should get tested and treated using an anonymous e-card.
Tell your doctor at least 4 weeks before if you are going to have surgery or will need to be on bed rest, because you have an increased chance of getting blood clots during surgery or bed rest. That scarring makes it difficult for an egg to travel the right direction, and hurts her chances of getting pregnant in the future. Use a back up birth control method and call your health care provider right away if the implant comes out.
