When I wrote about the 10 foods to avoid during pregnancy, many moms asked about green tea being included in the list. Though green tea has immense benefits , below mentioned are the effects of it when consumed in large quantities during pregnancy . Green tea is found to trigger the stimulations in uterus which could lead to a preterm labor.
Apart from other health issues, there is a strong connection between green tea and pregnancy. Green tea during pregnancy will keep your body hydrated even when one is not drinking the required amount of plain water.
Is drinking decaf green tea during pregnancy safe, No one really knows the answer to this question. During pregnancy DHFR is not likely to be blocked by the human body, as it could lead to folate deficiency. The most common use of green tea for weight loss is known to many it benefits are not limited to weight loss only. However being pregnant, one must limit the amount of caffeine intake for the whole day as it is good for you. Also important (especially for vegetarian moms and moms-to-be) is green tea’s affect on iron absorption. Now on a serious note if one thinks that it is safe to drink to drink as much green tea as one wants during pregnancy then you must know that it excess usage may prevent the folic acid to be absorbed easily and also it can cause difficulty for your body to absorb the iron especially from non-meat foods.
The tea has been shown to decrease the body’s ability to absorb iron from non-meat sources such as beans and tofu.  Decreased folic acid absorption has to do with the actions of the most abundant antioxidant found in green tea, EGCG. In the same way the expecting ladies must keep one thing is mind is that drinking green time in moderation has no harm to your health unlike other teas like black tea and coffee also. Women may want to avoid green tea while they are trying to conceive and during the first trimester of pregnancy while the fetus’s neural tube is developing.
After this point, it’s safe to consume one to two cups of the tea per day, preferably in between meals as to minimize any disturbance in iron and folic acid absorption from foods.
And remember, when it comes to caffeine consumption during pregnancy, coffee is not off limits.  It’s safe to consume up to 200 mg of caffeine during pregnancy which is equal to one 8-12-ounce cup of coffee (depending on the variety) or four 8-ounce cups of green or black tea each day.
