Best day to get pregnant during cycle

There are only six days during any cycle when a woman can get pregnant - the five days leading up to ovulation and the 24 hours after ovulation. CycleBeads lets you know when you can get pregnant by identifying 12 potentially fertile days each cycle – Days 8 through 19, where Day 1 is the first day of your period. If a woman is not pregnant within 6 cycles of using this method and has been actively trying, she should talk to her doctor to make sure that there are no health problems that are keeping her from achieving pregnancy.
While it is possible to estimate ovulation more exactly, it is a challenging process that requires time and training and the tracking of information such as cervical secretions, basal body temperature and charting throughout the cycle. For women with regular cycles between 26-32 days it is much easier to simply know that you can get pregnant as early as day 8 of your cycle and as late as day 19 of your cycle and on all the days in between. Studies have shown that women who use CycleBeads to help them plan a pregnancy are able get pregnant quickly.
The Standard Days Method, the family planning method on which the family planning option CycleBeads is based, identifies days 8 - 19 as the potentially fertile days for women with cycles between 26 and 32 days long. In terms of your chances of getting pregnant on day 19 of your cycle, it depends on when you ovulated. As this information relates to the Standard Days Method, if your cycles are in the 26-32 day range then your changes of getting pregnant from intercourse on day 19 are less than 5%. That said, if you wish to avoid pregnancy, it is encouraged that you avoid unprotected intercourse on days 8 through 19! If you've had unprotected sex and are wondering if you at risk of pregnancy, this tool from Planned Parenthood can help. There are only a few days (typically 6) each cycle when you can get pregnant, the days leading up to and including the day of ovulation. Ovulation is the name of the process that happens once in every menstrual cycle when hormone changes trigger an ovary to release an egg. While an egg only survives for up to 24 hours, sperm can remain active for up to five days.

The total ‘fertility window’, taking into account the lifetime of both the sperm and the egg, is about 6 days. Your ‘fertility window’ is the period of about 6 days during your menstrual cycle when it is possible to become pregnant from unprotected sex – hear more about how this works in the video from Professor Bill Ledger. The graph below shows the estimated likelihood of conception on the day of ovulation and the 5 days before. As we said above, ovulation usually happens 12-16 days BEFORE your next period starts, so the timing of ovulation depends on your menstrual cycle length.
To calculate the length of your menstrual cycle, count the number of days from the first day of your menstrual bleed to the day before the next bleed starts. If you’d like to have a more in-depth look at what happens inside your body during your menstrual cycle, click through to our Cycle and Ovulation page. Figuring out the exact timing of ovulation can be tricky, because it does not happen at exactly the same time each cycle.
These 12 days take into account the 6 days when pregnancy is possible as well as the variability in the timing of ovulation from one cycle to the next.
You can see a chart on this page which shows your chances for getting pregnant relative to the day you ovulate. In fact one in two couples could be trying to conceive on the wrong days of a woman’s menstrual cycle[i] because they don’t have the knowledge that we are about to share with you here. It may therefore be surprising to learn that a couple can conceive through sexual intercourse four to five days before the egg is released. It is true that the average menstrual cycle length is 28 days, but none of us are ‘average’ and cycle lengths vary from woman to woman and cycle to cycle - in fact 46% of menstrual cycles vary by 7 or more days[ii].
Surveys of women using CycleBeads to get pregnant show that they are highly successful, with more than 80% of women getting pregnant within 6 months and the vast majority achieving pregnancy within the first 3 months of trying to conceive. Meaning that women using an ovulation prediction kit may miss a number of potentially fertile days.

Therefore, if you believe that you have had unprotected sex close to the time of ovulation, it might be best to use ella if possible. We have put together information which will help you understand your fertility, the ovulation process and how this fits within your menstrual cycle as a whole. So to get pregnant, it’s important to have intercourse on your fertile days and if you want to find out when you’re most fertile, it’s important to get to know your own body and your own personal menstrual cycle.
But it can take time to get a prescription and fill it - the most important thing is to take action as soon as possible after unprotected sex. There are other fertility awareness methods that can be used by a woman with shorter, longer, or irregular cycles though and which will help you to determine when you are fertile each month. Both of these methods can be used by women who want to use a natural method, but don't have cycles in the 26-32 day range required to use the Standard Days Method. We can tell you that if you have sex and then ovulate 4 days later, your chances of getting pregnant are about 10-15%.
The graph at the top of this page outlines probability of getting pregnant based on when you had intercourse relative to when you ovulated. We are not able to give medical advice and encourage anyone with specific, personal questions about their cycles to talk to their health providers. If your cycles are consistently 29-30 days it is possible that your fertile window could be slightly shorter.
