What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?Leaky gut, as the words suggest, is describing a “HOLEy” intestine. By the way, leaky gut does have a fancier scientific name - “increased intestinal permeability” or “intestinal hyperpermeability”. In a normal healthy intestine, the cells lining the intestinal walls are glued very tightly to each other. For reasons we’ll discuss shortly, the intestine lining gets challenged and the integrity of the tight junction is being sabotaged, resulting in a compromised defense mechanism and the intestinal wall become less selective of what’s allowed to cross the barrier into the blood stream.
These uninvited guests trigger autoimmune reactions, which can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal bloating, excessive gas and cramps, fatigue, food sensitivities, joint pain, skin rashes, and autoimmunity. Leaky gut results in hepatic dysfunction and pancreatic insufficiency, which further impede food digestion and toxin accumulation, and making the gut more permeable, creating a vicious cycle of food allergy, malnutrition, bacterial dysbiosis and hepatic distress. Leaky gut syndrome may trigger or worsen disorders such as Crohn's disease, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma.
And I would be wary of any diagnosis of leaky gut syndrome if you don't have Crohn's disease, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, or asthma. If you have one or more of the medical conditions associated with leaky gut along with a few of the symptoms above, it may be wise to consider the possibility of leaky gut. The treatment of leaky gut generally does not involve any big gun pharmaceuticals that are loaded with toxins and dangerous side effects. On the other hand, a functional medicine doctor may consider runny some tests to look for clues to confirm leaky gut or bacterial dysbiosis. The leaky gut is the manifestation of the vicious cycle of allergy, malnutrition, bacterial dysbiosis and hepatic stress. Each problem feeds into the next and the cycle just keep going and your symptoms continue to get worse. The relationship between food allergies and sensitivities and the leaky gut is complicated.
Now with damaged epithelial cells and really leaky gut, nutrients are not absorbed properly. Under normal conditions, intestinal epithelial cells dies and regenerate every three to six days. This results in disruption of the intestinal harmony and with the now bigger organism population, we also have a waste control problem. The liver in people with leaky has to work extra hard to remove the unusual guests that enters the leaky gut, and get rid of the toxic waste generated in the crazy overpopulated gut microbiota. While the toxic bile is traveling in the intestine towards the colon and hopefully, out of the body, some of the toxin is being reabsorbed back into the system. Not only that, the toxic bile is damaging to the bile duct, intestinal wall and it can also reflux into the pancreas, affecting nutrient digestion. This whole scenario just feeds further into the leaky gut, making the intestine more permeable to intruders.

The information contained in this site is for general guidance on matters of interest only. Brief recap: I was diagnosed with leaky gut syndrome in February 2014 and embarked on a functional medicine program to heal my gut in March.
Leaky gut syndrome is a problem that is becoming a lot more prevalent in our society, and it is directly related to the type of diet that most people eat and drink.
Leaky gut syndrome is a name given to a health problem known as intestinal permeability, where the lining of the intestine becomes more porous than usual. A normal healthy gut does not allow waste matter, consisting of bacteria, fungus, parasites and their toxins, undigested protein to enter the bloodstream. This is because the particles that make it through to the blood-stream are seen as foreign substances, and create an immune response to these substances.
When you look at the above list you can see that there are a lot of different problems that may be related to leaky gut syndrome. If you have allergies or chemical sensitivity or chronic fatigue syndrome, it is possible you may also have leaky gut.As I was told, it took a long time to get this way, it may take some time and effort on your behalf to fix it. If you have been diagnosed with what is commonly called leaky gut syndrome, then it is time to look at what goes into your mouth and make sure its of the highest quality. According to natural medicine doctor and nutritionist Josh Axe, nearly all of us are prone to one of five distinct digestive imbalances, which he presents in his new book Eat Dirt: Why Leaky Gut May Be the Root Cause of Your Health Problems and 5 Surprising Steps to Cure It. To determine someone’s gut type, Axe looks at everything from your Chinese medicine constitution to the prescription drugs you take to your food cravings—and he uses that gut type to recommend a super-detailed course of treatment that encompasses food, supplements, lifestyle practices, essential oils, and more.
What it means: “Overworking and overexertion are the biggest reasons why people come down with gastric gut,” says Axe, who explains those with this type have especially slow-moving digestive systems.
What it means: If your stress hormones are constantly pumping, blood flow is diverted away from your gut, which impairs the growth of good bacteria and digestive enzyme production.
What it means: “Food sensitivities—usually gluten and dairy—are the reasons behind Immune Gut,” says Axe, who adds that those with this type usually have multiple allergies and intolerances.

The reason being- glutamine is generally consumed by professional athletes, bodybuilders and the people who are passionate about fitness and good physique. In fact, the joining point of the cells are called tight junction, so we’re reminded that they’re tight. The intestine wall is supposed to block out everything that is harmful to our body, and selectively allow what our body needs to pass through into the circulatory system or lymphatic system. Definitely, anything that’s harmful to the intestines, such as chronic inflammation, food sensitivity, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) therapy, cytotoxic drugs and radiation or certain antibiotics, excessive alcohol consumption, or compromised immunity. Or you can just start treating your leaky gut empirically with a clean nutrient dense plant-based diet that is free from toxins and filled with antioxidants.
The leaky gut or intestinal that is “holey” is a cause of food sensitivities because it allows anything to past through.
As a result, malnutrition happens, which further aggravates the structure, integrity and function of the epithelial cells in the intestines.
You can imagine overgrowth of all kinds of bacterial, fungus, other organism out of proportion leading to bacterial dysbiosis.
Individuals are strongly recommended to seek medical advice from professionals to assess your own individual situation.

I strictly followed the Repairvite Diet, or as you probably know it better, the autoimmune paleo diet (no grains, legumes, dairy, eggs, nightshades, nuts, or seeds). I only recommend and endorse products I use myself and believe that you will benefit from using, too. These spaces between the cells in the lining of the gut seem to become larger, and allow some of the contents of the gut to make its way into the bloodstream.
In the worst case scenario is that it can cause blood poisoning, and doctors call this condition systemic inflammatory response syndrome or SIRS.This is what leaky gut really is, and this can be of a greater or lesser risk to your health depending on how bad you have it.
It is normal to have some bad bacteria in the gut but it does need be balanced by more good bacteria than bad, or the bad bacteria cause a build up of toxic material that will damage the lining of the gut. These immune responses can cause a range of symptoms, including joint pain, headaches, pain in other areas of the body, inflammation and even asthma.Leaky gut syndrome does directly relate to the type of diet that you eat. There are a number of things that can be done to help you if you have leaky gut such as changing to a diet to aid leaky gut.
When I was told I had this problem it was explained to me that it was not something that had just happened. It may have been caused by chemicals in the environment or be the result of many years of eating a diet that contributed to the problem, but once you have it action is required to get healthy again.
Its a natural anti inflammatory, eases arthritic pain, helps male sexual problems as it's also an aphrodisiac. Axe says candida gut—an overgrowth of yeast in the digestive tract—is related to dampness in the body (a Chinese medicine condition caused by eating too much sugar, dairy, and wheat). As a result, anything that hampers digestion further—like not chewing properly, overeating, and taking antacids—is going to cause issues like gas, bloating, and acid reflux. Axe says those with this gut type often have adrenal fatigue, which causes sleep issues, decreased libido, and trouble focusing, among other symptoms. He says it’s caused by longtime use of antibiotics, birth control pills, and steroids, and at its worst results in autoimmune disorders and inflammatory bowel diseases. According to Axe, Eating a diet high in fat, sugar, and chemicals causes an inflammatory chain reaction from our liver to our intestines, leading to symptoms ranging from gallstones to rosacea to neurological distress.
Glutamine provides them the nutrition and energy to cope up with intense training sessions and also, to enhance muscle building. Then, when the intestine is exposed to all kinds of allergens, the immune system is activated, mast cells are deployed and histamine is released. The malnutrition, which is the result of poor nutrient absorption from the leaky gut, would hider epithelial cell repair and regeneration. The liver dumps the toxic free radicals into the bile, which is excreted via the intestine.
And please, do not use this as a substitute for medical care from a qualified practitioner. I followed the entire Repairvite program, beginning with GI Synergy (to destroy all the baddies living in my gut --- bacteria, yeast, and parasites), followed by gut-healing Repairvite, and concluded with liver-supporting Clearvite. Part of the problem is that many of you may have become very allergic and your allergies make it hard to keep to the leaky diets that doctors outline to help the problem.
Toxic material should not be going into the blood stream, and depending on how much of it enters the blood it can cause a number of health problems. If you have this health problem it is a matter of making changes now which will improve your health long term. Those who take birth control pills are especially prone to this condition, which manifests as weight gain, phlegmy coughs and sniffles, and a white coating on the tongue.
This immune reaction makes the gut even leakier, then more undigested food past through, then more allergic reaction. As a result, the intestinal wall continues to get weaker and weaker because the body cannot catch up with the demand to regenerate new cells.

Optimum amount of glutamine in your body promotes structural integrity of intestinal linings to treat leaky gut.Among various dietary supplements to heal leaky gut, glutamine is certainly the most powerful one. I no longer have to follow the AIP to feel well, but I still choose to eat a nutrient-dense paleo diet and to develop AIP recipes.
It restricts the undigested food particles, pathogens (disease causing bacteria) and other toxins from entering your blood stream. If due to some reason, this net structure gets damaged and the holes get bigger- then the above mentioned un-welcomed stuffs would seep through and mix into your blood stream. I have to admit that I was a bit shocked at my progress, too, so I want to tell you everything that I did. I believe that the combination of a comprehensive functional medicine approach to addressing leaky gut, regular treatments from two different Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctors, and diligent, frequent Qigong and Tai Chi practice (branches of TCM, actually) are what led to my quick recovery.
They were trained to follow an alternative treatment approach with the help of restricted diet, herbal teas and colonic irrigation.
I shared random tidbits about my trials in a few blog posts and discussed it pretty frequently on my Facebook and Instagram, but here's the gist: I had a lot of failures, especially with nightshades. Tomatoes flushed my face and made it itchy and caused an immune response in my gut (sorry for TMI, but they loosened my stools and caused my GI tract to produce quite a bit of mucus for several days after consumption). Lectins are hard to digest and sticky in nature. They stick to the gut walls, irritates them and widen the gaps to cause leaky gut. Potatoes just made me feel kind of "blah" and heavy and like I couldn't digest them. After those failures, I decided it best to just stick to the AIP diet until I was able to start seeing my doctor regularly for treatments.
You will save a ton of money and get a very in-depth treatment if you are seen by an acupuncture student in their clinical rotation right before they graduate. And, of course, everything they do will be checked by a professor and licensed practitioner. I have had some real breakthroughs thanks to the treatments at the school's clinic!I also revved up my qigong practice after moving, since my doctor happens to be married to my Sifu and his studio is attached to the clinic. This equilibrium ensures optimum digestion and body immunity If this balance gets disturbed, then the pathogens would overpower probiotics to increase the level of body toxins. Various reasons for gut flora imbalance are- chronic illness, consumption of processed foods rich in refined sugar and refined white flour, pasteurized dairy products, GMO foods, chronic use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, pesticides and contaminated drinking water. Your body synthesizes glutamine with the help of other essential amino acids and then it is transferred through the bloodstream to various parts of your body. I took a whole-lifestyle, multi-faced approach that included appropriate medical care, and importantly, stress management. And, if you want to speak in terms of Chinese Medicine, I worked to build up a lot of Qi, since I have been dealing with chronic deficiency for many years. When the harmful bacteria, undigested food and proteins enter the bloodstream and circulate through the body, it can affect the brain also.
Insomnia, depression, lack of concentration, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)- sometimes, these disorders are related to leaky gut. It means that if you are sweating hard in the gym to get rid of extra body fat without losing muscle, than glutamine is a vital supplement for you. Now, if you keep on doing intense training on a regular basis without replenishing glutamine from external dietary sources, then there are high chances that you would feel fatigue and low in energy. If your liver (or kidney) becomes less efficient to get rid of it, it can accumulate in your body to create troubles.
Hence, consuming glutamine from an external dietary source would seldom pose any serious side effect. I am afraid that anything less than 10 grams per day would not give you encouraging results.Glutamine is available in two forms- powder and capsules.
Considering the recommended dosage per day (which is pretty high), it is always good to consume powder instead of capsules.
Always opt for flavorless glutamine powder of a reputed brand.Confusion between Glutamine and L-GlutamineA number of times, people get confused between glutamine and L-glutamine.
You have to adopt a holistic healing approach where different aspects- restricted diet, positive lifestyle, use of dietary supplements and herbs, stress management and use of natural external treatments- would work as a team to help you manage your psoriasis and live a better life.
Glutamine can offer a great deal of help in this case because the cells of your intestine linings love it. It improves the overall gastrointestinal health by treating leaky gut and enhancing the intestinal mucus production.
