Whether or not you have gut issues, most disease begins with diet and gut as our body’s first line of defense. If you suffer from leaky gut syndrome, you’re overdue to consider adopting a leaky gut diet. Yogurt, sauerkraut, kombucha, olives, kimchi – these things have a very deep connection with each other and it isn’t just that they’ve been gaining popularity in the last few years. Probiotics are beneficial gut bacteria that can be found naturally in fermented foods or taken as a supplement found in most drug stores.
The two most common types of healthy bacteria are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium bacteria. When a food naturally ferments, the different species of Lactobacillus bacteria that live on the surface of the food (like cabbage in sauerkraut and kimchee) multiply. Historically, people fermented foods as a preservation method due to the lactic and acetic acids and antimicrobials present. It can also help people who are lactose intolerant with digesting lactose, the sugar found in milk products.
Do keep in mind that just because a food is fermented does not mean it contains probiotics. Barbara Lee is a traveling blogger who loves healthy food, conservation work, and the environment. Probiotics for a healthy gut are a hot trend right now, but you need more than a daily yogurt or kombucha to keep your gut flora in check. Probiotic supplements or probiotic foods containing good bacteria such as lactobacillus will continue to be a big trend in 2016. While natural yogurt, kombucha, and supplements might be rich in probiotics, taking them is not enough to create healthy gut flora. Create your everyday meals with fiber rich whole grains, vegetables, beans, or other natural plant protein food, and fruits. But then again, most importantly, shift your daily diet to more fiber rich,  plant-based foods this year. Probiotics are the good bacteria that get rid of bad bacteria when our gut (intestinal system) is weakened by thing slike antibiotics, stress, poor nutrition or any other negative factor (like celiac). Probiotics are living microorganisms, and must they remain alive to be effective, so choosing a brand with excellent quality control is critical.
Bacteria are proven to survive gastric acid and the bile salts of the stomach when the capsules have an enteric coating.
If you’re allergic to lactose, it’s safe to use the soy and rice based Bio-K+ products since they don’t contain any lactose.
The capsules are smaller than the probiotics that I’ve taken in the past, which makes them very easy to swallow.

To understand why probiotics are important, we first need to understand how valuable beneficial bacteria are to our health, and how prevalent they are in our bodies.
In our gut, good bacteria can displace bad bacteria and influence our overall health, metabolism, digestion, and body composition.
Gut bacteria are involved in immunity and help to ensure our immune system doesn’t have an itchy trigger finger (think food sensitivities). Adequate consumption of probiotics can help to eliminate abdominal pain, gas, bloating, reflux, allergies, nausea, food poisoning and vomiting.
While our intestinal bacteria are pretty tough little critters, their health can be compromised. And speaking of diet, if you eat animal foods, the gut health of the animal is important too. Probiotics are found in yogurt, buttermilk, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and bacterially cultured cheese.
As with all products containing living bacteria, probiotic products must be cooled during storage.
Probiotics seem to improve overall health, metabolism, immunity, digestion, and body composition. If you are healthy, aim for 1-2 servings of probiotic rich foods each day (use the food source list above). If you are healthy, aim for 2-3 servings of prebiotic rich foods each day (use the food source list above).
Take note: You may actually feel worse before you feel better since bacteria release toxins. In it you’ll learn the best eating, exercise, and lifestyle strategies — unique and personal — for you.
Good bacteria are always welcome, and if we arm Probiotics appropriately, they will play on our team. Probiotics are live microorganisms that are intended to have health benefits.* Microorganisms in the human body outnumber human cells by 10 to 1.

At the end of our detox retreats each participant goes home with 10 days supply of a professional strength probiotic, to welcome good bacteria into the freshly detoxed digestive system. Good bacteria in our large intestines take care of the last part of digestion, and are part of our first-line defence against bad bacteria. Eating a diet of non-organic proteins, fibre-less processed cooked foods, sugar & alcohol, caffeinated and carbonated drinks, medicating (instead of nutrition and cleansing), toxic cosmetics and household products… Get the idea??? Unfortunately, we are often surrounded by advertising encouraging us to consume and create this kind of unhealthy internal environment, and our bodies can only deal effectively with a certain amount of the resulting toxicity.
Mainstream research is starting to link healthy strong immunity with the good bacteria content of the intestines, and is recognising that the extensive use of wide spectrum antibiotics diminishes the overall immunity and health of the patients. For our health we need to support the growth of good bacteria on the outside and inside of our bodies.
A good way to grow good bacteria is provide a daily pro-biotic supplement, together with natural care -  natural oil soaps, moisturisers and a diet of healthy foods. If our gut isn’t functioning optimally, our health is more easily compromised in the same way that our garden plants are compromised if our soil is not in the best health. I’ve had many of my patients do a bone broth fast for three days to help heal leaky gut and cure autoimmune disease. The MCFA’s in coconut are easier to digest than other fats so they work well for leaky gut.
But if you have severe leaky gut, you may need to start out getting your fiber from steamed vegetables and fruit. Probiotics are also doctor recommended for travelers who may be going to areas with different bacteria as a way to prevent diarrhea. There are different gut bacteria for digesting different types of foods, but complex foods, like an apple, require more variety in gut digestion than a simple food, like a piece of candy.
For example, foods that are pasteurized lack the healthy bacteria that aid in digestion, like pickles or other picked vegetables.

Traditional methods of meat preservation (such as the curing of salami) also use fermentation of Lactobacilli to preserve the food, although arguably industrially produced cured meats no longer have health benefits. Fermentation intensifies the stimulant properties of the leaves and produces black and oolong varieties.
We don’t digest prebiotics, which come mainly from oligosaccharides (complex starches), but probiotics love them. However, if we are living a modern lifestyle, we’re more likely to have a reversed ratio.
We can do this by not disinfecting our skin or surfaces unnecessarily, by not feeding the bad bacteria, and by providing good bacteria with nourishment. When we disinfect a surface, externally or internally, as in the use of wide-spectrum antibiotics, we are creating a platform for the growth of hardier bad bacteria. Which will enable you to quickly notice when there is a negative symptom, pain, change of smell, or composition, and to find a healthy response to the need your body is expressing.
Reducing the burden of toxicity enhances functionality and balance of the body, and inspires an internal mental-shift by reducing internal toxicity levels. In addition to being a great source of vitamins and minerals, a diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables is beneficial to our gut bacteria.
Some of her most memorable life moments include taking care of endangered parrots on a desert island and diving with sea lions while living in the Galapagos. Our body has 100,000 billion bacteria just in our gut, and we need more good bacteria than bad to be healthy – that’s why the CFUs (colony forming units) for an effective probiotic are in the billions. If you want the truth, I supplement a lot (in addition to covering my bases as best I can with food).
Bad bacteria does the opposite and strains the immune system by producing more toxins every day.
Using wide-spectrum antibiotics can effectively kill good bacteria as well as the unwanted kind.
