Those of us living in developed countries where we have multiple food choices often focus on our calorie intake while neglecting the health of our gut microbiome – the vast numbers and variety of microorganisms inside our intestines. And another graphic depicting how damage to the gut’s mucosal lining allows undigested food particles and toxins to escape into the body, where they cause an inflammatory response.
See INCREASED GUT PERMEABILITY – CAUSES & CONSEQUENCES  for more information on Leaky Gut and some great images of what the inside walls of our intestines look like. Now that we’ve covered the importance of the probiotic microorganisms living in your gut microbiome, I hope you’re ready for some really good news! It’s about polyphenols and how they can help us repair our overall health by restoring the health of our gut linings. Polyphenols are anti-oxidant micro-nutrients derived from a variety of plants that increase the amount of good bacteria (probiotics) and inhibit  the amount of bad bacteria in our guts.
Strong evidence is accumulating that polyphenols’ play an important role in preventing degenerative diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Now a start up company in California, Greenteaspoon, has formulated a combination of nutrients called Preliva™ from plant extracts rich in polyphenols. Preliva™, the proprietary active formula in Good Gut Daily, is made from plant extracts rich in bio-available polyphenols. Good Gut Daily Natural Immune Health is formulated to strengthen your immunity and support your overall well-being. Good Gut Daily Natural Immune Health is for people actively trying to improve and manage their ongoing immune health.
Good Gut Daily Natural Digestive Health is designed to help you manage your ongoing digestive issues. Double strength Good Gut Rescue rapidly soothes the symptoms of digestive distress, alleviating occasional diarrhea, upset stomach, gas and bloating. Good Gut Rescue is for children and adults ages 2 and up with acute digestive issues like gastroenteritis, travelers sickness, diarrhea, gas and bloating or upset stomach.
All the versions of Good Gut Daily contain NO calories, sugar, gluten, soy, dairy, or GMOs – and come with a 30-day money back guarantee.
Remember: If your gut microbiome is balanced and healthy, the rest of your body will be a nice happy place to live too.
My experience with Good Gut Daily is that it greatly improved my GI health (which had become bad again a few months ago) in just a few days (4 to be exact) – alone, without taking any of my usual PRObiotics or other nutritional supplements.
I started with a single 1-oz dose of Good Gut Daily’s Natural Digestive Health (the Mango-Passion Fruit flavor) and then increased to 1 oz in the AM (on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before breakfast)  + another 1 oz 30 minutes before dinner. If you suffer from Leaky Gut Syndrome (or IBS), you’re overdue to consider adopting a Leaky Gut diet. Also, consuming foods that have omega-3 fats are beneficial — anti-inflammatory foods like grass-fed beef, lamb and wild-caught fish like salmon. There are many supplements that support your digestive health, but the most beneficial Leaky Gut supplements are l-glutamine, probiotics, digestive enzymes, aloe vera juice, quercetin, NAG and licorice root. So load up on BOTH probiotic-rich foods and take AT LEAST 50 billion units of probiotics daily from a high-quality brand.
Bacteria naturally live in our intestines and help promote health by destroying yeast and harmful bacteria that enter our bodies. There are trillions of these microorganisms colonizing our bodies — tenfold more numerous than the cells of our bodies. Of the trillions of microbes in your system, researchers have identified some — but by no means all — of the friendly flora species. Good intestinal flora regulate bowel movements and help prevent bloating, gas, and yeast overgrowth by controlling the pH level of the intestines through production of lactic acid. Oftentimes the simple addition of these healthy bacteria can eliminate symptoms and no further treatment is needed. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, probiotics may be beneficial in improving and managing these conditions. Probiotics have been clinically found to boost the immune system and strengthen the body’s defenses against illness. Include ample supply of vegetables, legumes and whole grains, as good bacteria live long and prosper on these foods. The best probiotic supplements come in powdered or capsule form and should be kept refrigerated. You should begin to feel a difference within a week or two if your probiotic supplements are effective and you are consistent taking them.
Buying the right supplements can be confusing especially as the supplement industry is not fully regulated. As with everything else, even the best probiotics are no substitute for good overall health practices.

This is part 3 of a three-part blog series covering the ins and outs of autoimmune disorders. In part 2 of this series, I explained how a leaky gut precedes most, if not all autoimmune diseases.
There is a reason why nature placed 70-80% of our immune system in and around our gut wall; apparently nature thinks the gut is a pretty dangerous place! A growing body of evidence inspired by the discovery of zonulin suggests that a trio of factors underlies most, if not all autoimmune diseases.
By this theory, all autoimmune diseases can be stopped or reversed if at least one of these three factors is removed. In most people suffering from autoimmune disease, going ‘gluten-free’ is often not enough to put their condition into remission if they are still consuming other grains and legumes. A rapidly growing number of individuals (myself included!) have been able to put our autoimmune diseases into remission by following the autoimmune protocol (AIP) of the Paleo diet until the leaky gut is healed. The AIP of the Paleo diet is similar to the standard Paleo diet in that it involves the removal of all grains, legumes, dairy, most sweeteners, vegetable oils, and other processed foods and drinks. Nightshades (This is a family of plants containing various chemicals known to cause leaky gut.
Sugar, starches, fruits, FODMAPs (These sweets can contribute to dysbiosis by feeding unfavorable bacteria in the gut. The other option is to just go full-on AIP diet from day one, and get all of the grieving of loss and ‘detoxing’ accomplished all at once (instead of spreading it out over several months). I would like to conclude this 3-part blog series by sincerely thanking you for taking the time to read this information, which I know can be difficult for some people to hear. Autoimmune disease is an unspoken epidemic that’s believed to affect around 10% of people, and occurs to some degree in everyone. We now have scientific evidence that demonstrates precisely how leaky gut causes autoimmune diseases via the production of a molecule called zonulin.
The most current theory of autoimmunity explains that three factors must simultaneously be present in order for autoimmune diseases to be active: genetic predisposition, a leaky gut, and trigger(s) for the leaky gut. The Paleo diet may be enough to keep your autoimmune disease in remission, but most people need to be more strict at first by following the AIP (or a similar gut-healing protocol) to fully heal their leaky gut.
If you have an autoimmune disease, you will probably need to avoid eating grains, legumes, and other foods that trigger your leaky gut for the rest of your life. While this may all sound difficult to do, it is far less difficult than the inevitable destruction that will result from your own immune system destroying your body. If you are confused about where to go from here, we’ve created a 21 day cleanse that will help you to get started down the road to recovery. If you’ve kept up with me through part 1 and part 2 of this  3-part blog series covering our current autoimmune epidemic, it probably won’t surprise you when I tell you that leaky gut syndrome has been correlated with many more diseases in addition to autoimmune diseases. I truly wish you the best of luck and urge you to stay strong as you summon your inner forces, and take command of your health, one gut-healing bite at a time. I would love to try the AIP diet but with the list of things to avoid, I can’t think of anything I could eat during that time period. Studies reveal modern food processing techniques and additives cause food to become more allergenic and create or contribute to intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”) and generalised inflammation involving histamine, mast cells and more. Having to rehash my diet does and don’ts to people I go out for dinner with has become easy enough (I’ll eat anything that’s fresh), but I’ve had my family with me for a week and explaining it all to them has been interesting.
A number of my scientifically minded (generally sceptic) friends chastise me, saying there’s no research to back this up.
So moderating our intake of high histamine foods and mast cell triggering chemicals and cosmetics is great, but I’ve found that fighting inflammation overall, rather than just focusing on histamine, has yielded the best results. The first study I came across proposes a link between intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and food processing, specifically due to lipid glycation – which is what happens when sugars are cooked with proteins or fats. That’s not the worst of it, according to the study authors, strongly roasting peanuts “typically increases” their allergenicity because glycation increases white blood cell reactions to food allergens. But more specifically, AGEs induce mast cell activated inflammation specifically, which in turn causes an increase in AGE formation, which then activates more mast cells. The next that caught my attention found that food emulsifiers, the stuff manufacturers add to make things creamier by properly mixing oil and water based ingredients together, leads to a “dramatic increase in a gut marker of inflammation”. The study authors advise that though emulsifiers are listed on food labels, the additives have varying names, and the best way to avoid eating them is to not eat processed food. Food additives are also believed to trigger ADHD-like behaviour in children lacking the histamine-degrading HNMT enzyme.
Broil and frying generate more glycation than roasting, but boiling is best (I don’t know about you but a boiled steak doesn’t much appeal to me though!).
Cooking your meal at low temperatures may help with post-meal leptin concentrations (the stuff that makes you feel full and interacts with insulin).

Tea and coffee are high in AGEs (I’ll be making my holy basil tea with cooler water from now on). Curcumin: the active constituent of turmeric may prevent the intestinal damage from processed foods. Interestingly my niece has been experiencing some inflammation and lip tingling after eating certain foods.
She did, and just two days later the symptoms disappeared and didn’t come back, till she ate some really crappy food. You can purchase a recording of my two hour online workshop that covers everything you need to know to get started with an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory diet just below. Eczema actually refers to a group of conditions that leave the skin red, itchy, and inflamed.  There are many different types of eczema but the most common form or eczema is Atopic Dermatitis or Atopic Eczema. The National Institutes of Health states that the prevalence of eczema is increasing from 9 – 30% of the population affected by it.
Eczema is typically seen in young children and in infants and many children out grow the condition by the age of 2; however, some individuals continue to experience symptoms of eczema on and off through out there entire life.
Infants that are affected by eczema can have rashes that ooze or crush and this may be on the face or the scalp.
The exact cause of eczema is unknown, but it is thought to be due to the body’s over active immune system responding to some sort of allergic trigger.
Depending on how we study this question you might have a different answer, in other words if we look only at the symptoms we would say Eczema is caused when the babies body does not  produce enough ceramides.
The composition of a child’s bacterial flora is dependent on the mother’s microflora, since she is the primary source for the child’s bacteria at the outset.
Friendly bacteria that is needed by the intestinal tract and digestive system can be added to the childs diet through Probiotics. In 2007 The Journal of Clinical & Experimental Allergy reported that infants that started priobiotics after birth had less incidence of eczema at the age of 2 when compared to infants that didn’t supplement with probiotics. Also The Lancet, conducted a study in 2001 were they gave probiotics to pregnant women who had at least one first degree relative with atopic eczema.  At 2 years of age the frequency of atopic eczema was 50% less than the mothers that did not consume probiotics during pregnancy. When we have imbalances in bacteria we can see health conditions throughout our entire bodies. Leaky gut syndrome occurs when the lining of the intestinal tract, which is typically tight and only allows a few selected small particles to pass through into the blood stream becomes “LEAKY” small holes.  This allows partially undigested food to enter into the blood stream.
Leaky Gut Syndrome is often times caused by an imbalance between good and bad bacteria.  Overgrowth of bad bacteria and yeast can cause the cells of the intestinal tract to shrink leading to a LEAKY GUT. One Wellness Place Probiotics are pharmaceutical grade probiotics that provide 5 different strains of beneficial bacteria. Fish Oils and Omega 3 supplements are very helpful to treat Eczema and help to improve balance and help with symptoms. Eczema outbreaks can usually be avoided or the severity lessened by following these simple tips.
Removing toxins from your system can aid digestion, absorption, nutrient use and elimination.
Then identify and eliminate foods from your diet that may irritate and damage your intestinal lining.  This damage can cause leaky gut syndrome or other digestive problems. Lemon juice in warm water.  This is most effective when taken in the morning on an empty stomach. Fruits and vegetables.  These foods contain fiber, lots of micronutrients and lots of antioxidants. You can also add foods, herbs and supplements which promote intestinal healing.  Examples of these are omega 3 fatty acids, turmeric, aloe vera and L-glutamine. There are holes where there should be intact cells that allow only needed nutrients to get through the intestinal walls into the blood stream. Greenteaspoon’s Good Gut Daily is a tasty, liquid dietary supplement containing antioxidant, PREbiotic polyphenols for protecting or rebuilding a healthy gut. This 1 oz twice a day dosing calmed down my over-active gut and gave me back my energy, which had been disturbingly low during the previous weeks of GI upset. Remember, the top foods to remove that cause Leaky Gut are sugar, grains, conventional meat, conventional dairy and GMO foods. I’ve had many of my patients do a bone broth fast for three days to help heal Leaky Gut and cure autoimmune disease. The MCFA’s in coconut are easier to digest than other fats so they work well for Leaky Gut. But if you have severe Leaky Gut, you may need to start out getting your fiber from steamed vegetables and fruit. Glutamine is an essential amino acid that is anti-inflammatory and necessary for the growth and repair of your intestinal lining. DGL supports the body’s natural processes for maintaining the mucosal lining of the stomach and duodenum. It also stabilizes mast cells and reduces the release of histamine, which is common in food intolerance. Other common inhabitants include: Bacteroides, Clostridium, Fusobacterium, Eubacterium, Streptococcus and certain yeast (Candida) strains. Gut flora get their food by breaking down what we eat, which is why diet is the most important factor.
Antibiotic Use: Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria in the body, and they do not discriminate between the bad and the good. Digestive Disturbances: If you have been having issues with your gut and are possibly suffering from digestive problems, irritable bowel syndrome etc, then taking a probiotic supplement is a good idea and will help with those conditions. Research has shown probiotics to be helpful for those conditions including diarrhoea, gas, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s and H. Skin Conditions: Poor digestion and an imbalance in gut bacteria can contribute to the presence of acne, eczema, rashes, hives or psoriasis.
Weak Immunity: Are you one of those that tend to have the cold or flu like clock work when the weather changes or every time the virus goes around? Healthy bacteria can train your immune system to distinguish between “foreign” microbes and those originating in your body, making probiotics the best front line against infection. Allergies: Probiotics may also be helpful in reducing allergies, especially food allergies.
Yeast Infections: If you suffer from recurring yeast infections or Candida, then this is a good indicator that there is an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the body. These foods are what bad bacteria feed on, so in order to expedite their elimination from the body, it is best to cut off their food source. Polyphenols, found in foods like garlic, green tea and ginseng, are also helpful in fostering friendly flora. Always improve the diet first, eliminating hard-to-digest foods such as processed, packaged, and fried foods, dairy, gluten and soy.
Look out for supplements that contain Lactobacillus, Acidophilus and Bifidobacteria in the billions.
But they do work extremely well as part of a balanced approach, combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle. She trained at Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in New York and is certified by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP). Gloria guides and supports them on the journey to relieving their stress, balancing hormones, improving their diet and working on their mindset making them more relaxed and receptive to getting pregnant. Part 1 explained that autoimmune diseases are an unspoken epidemic affecting far more people than is currently realized. Emerging research continues to reveal that a leaky gut can be caused by many different things, but is particularly triggered by imbalances in our gut bacteria (dysbiosis) and by the chemicals found in grains and legumes (especially gluten).
If a leaky gut is allowed to persist, the gut’s immune system will eventually become overwhelmed from the massive influx of toxins. We can obviously not remove our genetic predisposition to autoimmune disease (at least not yet). Indeed the complete removal of grains and legumes is often required to completely heal a leaky gut.
Heal the leaky gut by removing irritating foods that are causing the leaky gut in the first place. Heal the leaky gut by addressing gut flora imbalances (dysbiosis) and strive to attain a healthy gut microflora (orthobiosis). It stands to reason that if a person is plagued with autoimmunity, then their gut is probably quite leaky and in need of some serious healing.
It will likely be a tough first month, but this method will achieve the most rapid and drastic results for your autoimmune disease.
Our current theories of autoimmune disease will keep evolving as researchers continue to define the precise mechanisms involved in autoimmunity. Groundbreaking research has also connected  leaky gut syndrome with a long list of maladies including multiple types of cancers, neuroinflammatory diseases (i.e. Zonulin and its regulation of intestinal barrier function: the biological door to inflammation, autoimmunity, and cancer. Intestinal immune regulation as a potential diet-modifiable feature of gut inflammation and autoimmunity. Intestinal permeability and its regulation by zonulin: diagnostic and therapeutic implications.
Her own experience of overcoming multiple autoimmune disorders by adopting a Paleo lifestyle vastly contributes to her passion for helping others to also reclaim their health and vitality by making informed dietary decisions.
Not everyone needs to follow AIP strictly to get their autoimmune conditions under control, although it is often the fastest and most direct route to putting autoimmunity into remission. I have suffered for several years with severe shoulder pain, undergone an operation, then further pain spreading to toes, fingers, hips to the point that the pain when walking was unbearable at times.
Many of my clients with Crohn’s actually benefit from taking a more GAPS-based approach at first (Gut And Psychology Syndrome), especially if malnourishment is an issue. To me, it’s saying no to food that’s been messed with in a structural way by machine processing, and any foods treated with additives of any kind, including so called “natural” flavours, additives and colours, because in my mind, those are still foods not in their original state. I’ve never specifically looked for any because I likes what I likes and it’s nothing to do with the science. Glycation is that really lovely brown crust you get when barbecuing meat or roasting vegetables with a nice honey marinade.
Exposure of intestinal cells to glycation products increases interleukin 6 and 8 formation (from mast cells).

Mice treated with emulsifiers, a class of food additive that includes carrageenan, xanthan gum and lecithin (all of which are found in “natural” products), not only developed gut inflammation, they also showed signs of metabolic syndrome (obesity, high blood sugar and insulin resistance). When asked how she should resolve it, I wracked my brain trying to come up with an easy to implement solution a 21 year old would stick to. In 2000 The Journal of Clinical & Experimental Allergy reported that infants given probiotic supplemented formulas had a significant improvement in atopic eczema skin conditions after 2 months when compared to those infants that were not supplemented with probiotics.
Do you have constipation, diarrhea, gas, or stomach cramps?  Here are four key strategies to clean out your digestive system.
These holes allow larger particles of undigested food and toxins through and the body attacks them as invading pathogens, producing an inflammatory response.
Rob Wotring, Greenteaspoon’s Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, is currently engaged in clinically testing a pill version for travel. The top toxic exposures to eliminate are tap water, pesticides, NSAIDS and antibiotics — but remember to always consult with your physician if he or she has prescribed these for you. I see people all the time only follow part of the protocol in healing their Leaky Gut Syndrome by removing the damaging irritants. L-glutamine benefits include acting as a protector: coating your cell walls and acting as a repellent to irritants.
This herb is especially beneficial if someone’s Leaky Gut is being caused by emotional stress. Besides occurring naturally inside your body, probiotics also appear in certain foods and are available as dietary supplements. So if you have ever taken a round of antibiotics, or are taking them right now, then consider taking a probiotic to reintroduce the healthy flora back into the body.
Cleaning up your diet beginning with probiotics and improving diet can help eliminate these conditions. That probably means your defense system (immune system) is not strong enough to defend your body against any of these viruses. Most often the root cause of food allergies is leaky gut, which can be improved by proper flora levels in the gut. They introduce active probiotic cultures that help wedge out unfriendly bacteria by competing directly with two main food poisoners: the toxic strains of E. Probiotics lose potency with age, so buy smaller quantities more often to ensure you are getting the most active cultures. In part 2, we discussed the connection between leaky gut, immune system function, and autoimmune disease.
At this point, the contents of the gut (that the body would normally never be exposed to), can gain access to the bloodstream.
Alessio Fasano (the researcher who discovered zonulin) has proposed that three factors must be simultaneously present for autoimmune diseases to be active in the body. I’ve had re-flares of my autoimmunity just by getting too ‘stressed out’ and I’ve had to learn ways to manage my stress levels through meditation, deep breathing, exercising, time management, and getting enough sleep consistently. In my experience, the more ‘comfortable’ a disease gets in your body, the more difficult it is to eradicate.
The thought of letting go of something that you love, depend on daily, and are quite possibly totally addicted to, sounds downright terrifying. After being strict Paleo for a few months, my autoimmunity had largely gone into remission, but I was still experiencing occasional flares. We know so much more now than we did 10 years ago, and the solution is finally within our reach.
I was very sick, so I had to follow AIP for almost a year to finally get my leaky gut under control.
Just remember…it can take a loooong time to heal a leaky gut that has been sick for years. But a few studies caught my attention when working on another post that happen to explain why processed foods are a poor choice if dealing with, or trying to prevent, inflammation. Tasty through they turn out to be, advanced glycation and glycation endoproducts (AGEs) can contribute to the formation of acrylamide, a potential carcinogen. The study showed that these food additives affect gut bacteria in animal studies, with an earlier study revealed that emulsifiers promote the development of inflammatory bowel disease in genetically predisposed mice. I truly believe that in some cases it’s enough to simply eliminate processed foods to deal with excess inflammation. In addition to being found in foods, probiotics are available as supplements in capsule, tablet, powder, and liquid form. Resolution of acute gastroenteritis symptoms in children and adults treated with a novel polyphenol-based prebiotic. Identification of the 100 richest dietary sources of polyphenols: an application of the Phenol-Explorer database.
But the part they often leave out is re-inoculating their gut with beneficial bacteria that will keep bad bacteria at bay.
Probiotics, or good bacteria, crowd out the bad bacteria, helping to relieve the body of the symptoms attributed to the overgrowth.
In this final article of the series, we will take a closer look at new research demonstrating precisely how diet and gut health are intimately connected to autoimmunity. In all people, zonulin increases intestinal permeability (leaky gut) by triggering the opening of the tiny gates that connect adjacent cells in the gut wall. Once in circulation, the toxins can travel to virtually any location in the body, and initiate an inflammatory immune response wherever they land. According to this most recent theory of autoimmune disease, if only one factor of the trio is removed, an autoimmune disease will go into remission. As explained in part 2, several different triggers can induce leaky gut via the release of zonulin from the gut wall, but the chemicals found in grains (especially gluten) as well as an unbalanced gut microflora (dysbiosis) are some of the most potent causes of a leaky gut.
Just like all mothers, the plant wants more than anything to keep its babies alive, to ultimately ensure the survival of its species.
Probiotics or prebiotics may also be needed, and it can be helpful to work with a health care provider who specializes in restoring orthobiosis, as this is a highly individualized endeavor. In addition, many autoimmune diseases are initially triggered by a stressful event, like an illness or the death of a loved one. With autoimmune diseases, the tissue destruction that results from active ‘flares’ can create permanent damage that may not be able to be healed by diet alone. While this may sound difficult, I encourage you that it is waaaaaaaaay easier than suffering from the pain that will result from the destruction of your own body by autoimmune disease. It is truly a loss of great magnitude that can elicit similar feelings to going through a horrible break-up. I decided to transition to the AIP, which I followed for about 9 months before one day I realized that I couldn’t remember the last time I’d had a flare. To summarize, here are some of the main points that I think are critical to understand if you feel ready to take the bull by the horns, and overcome your autoimmune disease. The realization that a leaky gut lies at the root of many diseases and disorders is not new;  it is something that humans have understood since antiquity. Describing the types of foods to eat or the foods to avoid just doesn’t register with me. However, if we look further we find that there are influences that cause the lack of production, specifically the imbalanced flora of intestinal bacteria health of the child, which is determined by a number of factors including the mother’s microflora.
If the mother has a good flora of bacteria, the contact is an important help for the child to be able to be colonized by bacteria in the proper way. If you can follow the above protocol, you are well on your way to healing your gut for good. I will also explain how the Autoimmune Protocol of the Paleo diet can be used to overcome most, if not all autoimmune disorders by facilitating the healing of a leaky gut. That is why plants concentrate chemicals (collectively referred to as antinutrients) in their seed babies. It’s important that we learn to minimize negative stress wherever we can, and to learn stress-management skills to best handle the inevitable stressors that will occur in life.
So if you simply cannot fathom the thought of giving up certain foods, even for a MONTH to see if they are contributing to your autoimmunity, then I suggest taking baby steps and eliminating one or two foods at a time. Unfortunately, our modern era of medicine requires “scientific proof” which often takes a long time to be put into practice and recommended to the masses.
It was really difficult for the first few weeks, and then I realized how much better I felt by excluding certain foods….which made sticking to the AIP a lot easier! I decided there and then in the middle of the afternoon, sat in the middle of a car park, to start the AIP.
I’ve found that my flares are tightly connected to rancid polyunsaturated oils and to all grains and legumes, especially.
It can be assumed that certain hygiene measures, such as antibiotics given in some countries in connection with deliveries, in normal cases may have a deleterious effect, since the mother then is at risk to get a skewed bacteria flora, which she passes on to the child,” says Goran Molin, professor of food hygiene at the Faculty of Engineering, Lund University, who co-directed the study with Siv Ahrne, also a professor of food hygiene. However, in a leaky gut, large particles from inside the gut (like bacteria, viruses, antigens, toxins, and partially-digested food) escape through the open tight junction gates, and into the body. The antinutrient chemicals in seeds are lethal to bugs, bacteria, and other small critters that really want to eat the nutrient-dense seed. I then made the bold decision to SLOWLY reintroduce foods back into my diet, which has been largely successful. It has taken researchers a long time to finally catch up with what we have long known: that gut health is a lot more important than we are made to realize. Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, cancer, peripheral neuropathy, and age related deafness are all linked to AGEs. In larger mammals, the antinutrients are generally not lethal (at least not immediately), but they do cause irritation to the gut lining, and can eventually result in leaky gut syndrome. I made myself a chart to tick off each day (even dividing it into morning and afternoon so I could afford myself two ticks a day!). Among the various seeds, the grains and legumes are some of the worst when it comes to irritating the gut lining and instigating a leaky gut. Eating out at restaurants almost always makes me sick (because of the crappy oils they use). The body is funny like that, but we often are attracted to the very foods that we are intolerant to!
I hope this info is helpful for you, and wish for the best of luck and good health in your journey!
If I over-consume any of the foods on the AIP, then I experience a re-flare of my symptoms, so I am highly motivated to frequently rotate my foods and to not eat too many nightshades, nuts, seeds, chocolate, etc. I’ve used food as my medicine, and I feel very blessed to have been able to overcome my multiple autoimmune diseases without the use of prescription medications, simply by changing my diet and lifestyle. I’ll keep researching and am willing and ready to start once I figure out how to do it.
