Gin Rummy is played with two standard 52-card decks (for three players, use three decks) and follows a set of rules focused on forming melds and laying down cards. The objective is to score points by "knocking" when your hand's total value is 31 or less, or by going out by rummying all your cards. The game begins with the dealer shuffling the cards and dealing 10 cards to each player (seven for the first player to the dealer's left, then six to everyone else). The remaining deck is placed face down to form the draw pile, with the top card turned face up beside it to start the discard pile. Players take turns, consisting of three main actions: drawing either the top card from the discard pile or the top card from the draw pile, then discarding one card onto the discard pile to maintain a sequence. Throughout the turn, players can also choose to "meld" any sets (three or four cards of the same rank) or runs (three or four sequential cards of the same suit) they have already formed in their hand by placing them face up. The turn ends after a player has drawn and discarded. The game continues until a player either "goes out" by rummying all their cards (either by adding to existing melds or knocking if they cannot form any runs/sets) or decides to "knock" when their hand's total value is 31 points or less. Scoring then occurs based on the remaining cards in the other players' hands.
