The game begins with the dealer shuffling the cards and dealing 10 cards to each player (seven for the first player to the dealer's left, then six to everyone else). The remaining deck is placed face down to form the draw pile, with the top card turned face up beside it to start the discard pile. Players take turns, consisting of three main actions: drawing either the top card from the discard pile or the top card from the draw pile, then discarding one card onto the discard pile to maintain a sequence.
