trick-taking card game for 3 players

The three players sat around the small table, the air thick with the low murmur of conversation and the shuffling of cards. A standard deck was dealt, face down, with each player receiving five cards, the remainder forming a central draw pile. To the left of the dealer, the "hearts" card was placed face up as the starting "trump" suit, its bright red symbol marking the path for the first trick. The player to the dealer's left led by carefully lifting one card from their hand and placing it face down onto the table. The other two players, taking turns, followed suit if they could, or playing a card from a different suit if necessary. The goal was not just to follow, but to "win the trick" by playing a card of the same suit that was higher in rank than any previously played card of that suit, or by playing the trump suit if the lead card was not trump. The winner of the trick gathered the cards, adding them to their personal collection and becoming the lead player for the next round, the tension building as each card was played and the potential for a winning combination was revealed.
