The rules of Conway's Game of Life are deceptively simple yet yield profound complexity. The game unfolds on an infinite (or finite wrapped) grid of square cells, each of which can be in one of two states: alive or dead. The evolution of the grid follows a strict set of transition rules applied simultaneously to every cell, based on its current state and the number of live neighbors it possesses. Specifically, a live cell survives to the next generation if it has two or three live neighbors; it dies from underpopulation if it has fewer than two, or from overpopulation if it has more than three. Conversely, a dead cell is resurrected as a live cell in the next generation if, and only if, it has exactly three live neighbors.
