Rummy is a classic and engaging card game played with the standard 52-card deck, typically for 2-6 players. The primary objective is to form sets (groups of three or four cards of the same rank, like 7-7-7 or Jack-Jack-Jack) and runs (sequences of three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive rank order, such as 4-5-6 of hearts). Players are dealt a number of cards (usually 10 or 13) face down, with the remaining deck placed face down to form the draw pile and the top card turned face up beside it to start the discard pile. Gameplay involves taking turns, where each player must either draw one card from the top of the draw pile or pick up the entire discard pile (if the top card isn't helpful, they usually must discard one card from their hand). The goal is to strategically discard cards onto the discard pile, aiming to eventually empty one's hand by melding valid sets and runs. The game ends when a player successfully "goes out" by melding all their cards and discarding the last one, at which point the remaining players count the points value of their unmelded cards, and the player who went out earns points equal to the sum of those remaining cards.
