The rummy card game unfolds with an air of focused anticipation. Players shuffle a standard deck (or multiple decks for more participants), and each is dealt a hand, typically 7 cards face down. The remainder of the deck is placed face down to form the draw pile, with the top card flipped over to start the discard pile. The game begins with the player to the dealer's left, who must either match the card on the discard pile using a card from their hand or draw a new card from the top of the draw pile if they cannot make a match. Once a match is made, the cards are placed in a face-up meld (either a run - a sequence of consecutive cards of the same suit - or a set - three or four cards of the same rank but different suits) and set aside, clearly visible to all. Play then passes to the next player, who continues by either adding to existing melds on the table, creating their own new melds from their hand, or drawing from the draw pile if necessary. The turn proceeds clockwise around the table, each player strategically deciding whether to attempt to build their own sets and runs or to help the "caller" (the player who started the first meld) by adding to their growing collection of face-up cards. The dynamic interplay of drawing, discarding, and building melds creates a game of skill, memory, and careful calculation.
