In a two-player game of Rummy, the rules are relatively straightforward but demand focus and strategy. The standard 52-card deck is used, and each player is dealt ten cards, with the top card placed face-up to start the discard pile and the remainder face-down to form the draw pile. The objective is to build matched sets (three or four cards of the same rank, like 7-7-7 or K-K-K-K) or runs (three or four sequential cards of the same suit, such as 4-5-6 of hearts). Players take turns, consisting of three main actions: drawing either the top card from the draw pile or the top card from the discard pile, sorting their hand into potential sets and runs, and discarding one card face-up onto the discard pile. The turn passes to the opponent after completing these actions. The game progresses until one player successfully "goes out" by laying down all their cards into valid sets and runs, either by drawing the last card needed from the draw pile or by taking the entire discard pile if the top card allows them to complete their hand. The winner of that round scores points based on the total value of the cards left in their opponent's hand (aces count as 1, face cards as 10, and number cards by their face value).
