Jim Rummy is a lively and engaging card game that builds upon the classic Rummy principles, emphasizing quick decision-making and efficient card melding. The game is typically played with a standard 52-card deck and can accommodate 2 to 6 players. Each player is dealt a set number of cards (usually 10 or 12, depending on the variant and the number of players), and the remaining deck is placed face down to form the draw pile, with the top card flipped over to start the discard pile. The objective is to be the first player to meld all of their cards into valid sets or runs and then 'lay off' these groups onto a previously formed meld of the same suit, ultimately aiming to be the first to reach a designated winning score, often 100 points.
The gameplay unfolds in rounds, with each player taking turns in a clockwise direction. On their turn, a player must perform one of three core actions: they can draw a card from either the top of the draw pile or the discard pile (though drawing from the discard pile might be restricted or penalized under certain house rules), they can add a card from their hand to the discard pile, or they can attempt to meld cards from their hand. A valid meld consists of either three or four cards of the same rank (a set) or a sequence of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (a run). Once a player has formed a meld, they can choose to lay it down face up in front of them, provided they announce it clearly. The rest of the turn proceeds with the player drawing a card and then choosing to discard or end their turn.
