To play Rummy, the objective is to form sets (three or four cards of the same rank, like 7-7-7) and runs (three or more sequential cards of the same suit, like 4♣-5♣-6♣). The game typically starts with players being dealt a specific number of cards (often 10 or 13). Then, one player becomes the dealer, and the dealing process begins, usually with the dealer dealing one card face-up onto the table to start the discard pile, and then dealing one card face-down to each player in turn. The remaining deck is placed face down in the center to form the draw pile. Play proceeds clockwise, with each player taking turns performing a specific set of actions: drawing either the top card from the draw pile or the top card from the discard pile, adding that card to their own hand, and then discarding one card from their hand onto the discard pile to keep the flow of play moving. The turn ends when a player has formed valid sets or runs in their hand and chooses to "meld" them by placing them face-up on the table. Once a player has melded all the cards in their hand into valid sets and runs, they can end the round by "giving up" or "laying off" any remaining cards in their hand onto existing melds played by other players. The player who gives up first is declared the winner of that round and typically scores points based on the value of the cards left in the opponents' hands. The game can then be replayed with the winner of the previous round becoming the new dealer.
