Gin Rummy is a popular two-player card game that blends strategy with the satisfying ritual of card manipulation. The objective is straightforward: players aim to form melds, which are sets of three or four cards of the same rank (like 7-7-7 or K-K-K-K) or sequences of three or four consecutive cards of the same suit (such as 8-9-10 of hearts). To achieve this goal, each player is dealt a hand of 10 cards at the start of their turn. The game progresses with players drawing cards: either taking the top card from the discard pile or drawing a fresh card from the deck if the pile is empty. After drawing, players must discard one card, strategically choosing which card to shed to improve their hand towards forming melds and reducing their 'deadwood' – the total value of unmelded cards remaining in their hand. The value of each card is counted (aces are typically worth 1, face cards 10, and number cards their pip value), and the player with the lowest deadwood count at the end of their turn, meeting the minimum meld requirement of 40 points, 'goes Gin' and wins the round. If neither player goes Gin, the game continues until one player manages to knock, discarding their cards when their deadwood total drops below 40 points, initiating a scoring round based on the difference in deadwood values.
