Classic Rummy is a captivating card game that typically involves 2 to 6 players and a standard 52-card deck (or multiple decks for more players). The primary objective is to build melds – sets of three or four cards of the same rank (like 7-7-7 or K-K-K-K) or sequences of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (such as 4-5-6 of hearts). Players are dealt a number of cards depending on the specific variant being played, often starting with a 'cut' to determine the dealer and then dealing each player alternately. The game progresses in two main phases: the 'heating up' or 'laying out' phase, where players take turns drawing a card from the stock pile or the discard pile (and optionally discarding a card), and adding it to their visible or hidden 'hand' to form or work towards melds; and the 'knocking' phase, which begins when a player successfully lays down all their cards into valid melds. Once a player knocks, signifying they believe they can no longer take any more turns without adding to existing melds, all other players get one final chance to draw and discard. The hand is then scored based on the value of unmelded cards ('deadwood'), with the player who knocked aiming for a lower score.
