The card rummy game unfolds with the shuffling and dealing of cards, typically starting with two or three cards dealt face down to each player and the remainder placed face up to form the draw pile. Players then take turns, beginning with the dealer or the player to their left, drawing one card either from the top of the face-up draw pile or, in some variations, from the discard pile (often after checking it). The objective is clear: to form valid sets or runs of cards – sets being sequences of three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., three 7s) and runs being sequences of three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order (e.g., 4, 5, 6 of hearts). Throughout their turn, a player must meld any valid sets or runs they can form, placing them face up in a designated area. They can also choose to lay off one or more cards onto existing valid sets or runs belonging to other players, provided those sets or runs are already face up. Once a player has successfully melded all their cards into valid sets or runs, they declare "Rummy!" and begin to discard one card from their hand onto the discard pile, ending their turn. The game continues with subsequent players drawing, melding, laying off, and discarding until one player successfully goes out, or until a predetermined ending condition is met, at which point the hand is scored based on the value of unmelded cards in each player's hand.
