Gaple is a popular Indonesian card game that uses a Western Double-Six domino set. The game can be played by four or five players, and it may also be played for stakes. One of the variations of the game is playing with teams, where two players form a team to compete against another team.

Game Rules

The game starts by shuffling the dominoes and dealing them to each player. Each player draws a number of tiles depending on the number of players taking part.

  • With four players, each player draws 6 tiles each, leaving four to form a boneyard.
  • With five players, each player draws 5 tiles, leaving three to form a boneyard.
  • If there are no tiles left in the boneyard and four players are playing with 7 tiles each, the player holding the double-blank sets it down as the first tile of the game. Otherwise, a tile is chosen at random from the boneyard and set down as the first tile of the game.

Players then take turns laying tiles onto the open ends of the domino layout, with same-number adjacent to same-number (doubles placed inline). If a player is unable to play a tile, they must discard one tile from their hand and it will be used at the end of the round to help form the discarding player's score.

The game continues until one team has played all their tiles or no more tiles can be played. The team with the lowest total point score wins the game.

Variations

One variation is that players who cannot play a tile do not discard one but simply pass. Another variation is that double-blank scores 25 points unless the player also holds another tile bearing a blank on either end, in which case it counts as zero.
