SOGEMAB: A Presentation of the Society for Biomedical Equipment Management and Maintenance
The Société de Gestion de l'Equipement et de la Maintenance Biomédicale (SOGEMAB) is a professional organization dedicated to promoting the management and maintenance of biomedical equipment in healthcare institutions. As a key player in the field, SOGEMAB has been instrumental in developing and implementing training programs for medical professionals.
In this presentation, we will share our experiences with the Caisse Nationale de Sécurité Sociale (CNSS) on designing and implementing a multi-year training plan for personnel. We will also present the reference framework for developing and maintaining biomedical equipment, highlighting the importance of proper maintenance in ensuring patient safety and quality care.
The Reference Framework
The reference framework for biomedical equipment management and maintenance was developed by SOGEMAB in collaboration with international organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Union's Agency for Healthcare Quality. The framework outlines the essential principles and guidelines for managing and maintaining biomedical equipment in healthcare institutions.
Designing a Training Plan
In 2018, CNSS approached SOGEMAB to develop a multi-year training plan for personnel responsible for managing and maintaining biomedical equipment in healthcare institutions. Our team conducted a thorough analysis of the needs and challenges faced by medical professionals in this field. We identified key competencies required for effective management and maintenance of biomedical equipment, including knowledge of equipment functionality, troubleshooting skills, and regulatory compliance.
The training plan was designed to address these competencies through a combination of theoretical and practical training sessions. The plan included modules on:
- Biomedical equipment basics: This module covered the fundamental principles of biomedical equipment operation, safety features, and maintenance requirements.
- Equipment-specific training: Each module focused on a specific type of biomedical equipment, such as MRI machines or ventilators, providing hands-on experience with equipment operation and troubleshooting.
- Regulatory compliance: This module emphasized the importance of complying with relevant regulations and standards, including those related to patient safety, quality care, and medical device approval.
Implementation and Evaluation
The training plan was implemented in collaboration with CNSS and healthcare institutions across France. The program included a combination of classroom-based training sessions, online modules, and hands-on practice exercises.
Evaluation results showed that the training program was effective in improving personnel skills and knowledge related to biomedical equipment management and maintenance. Participants reported increased confidence in their ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and ensure patient safety.
****, SOGEMAB's experience with designing and implementing a multi-year training plan for biomedical equipment management and maintenance demonstrates our commitment to promoting excellence in this field. By sharing our expertise and collaborating with international organizations, we can contribute to the development of best practices and standards for ensuring patient safety and quality care.
