The glucose curve is an ideal tool for differentiating the problem of short duration of insulin activity versus Somogyi effect.
When creating a glucose curve, remember that stress can affect the reliability of results and the glucose curve is only one tool among others that can help diagnose and monitor canine diabetes mellitus. Feed and inject the dog with Vetsulin® (porcine insulin zinc suspension) as it is done at home. Collect a drop of capillary blood from the ear (pinna), or sometimes the inner lip or elbow callus, and analyze this using a handheld blood glucose meter (glucometer). Glucometers should be calibrated specifically for dogs and cats because of the difference in the ratios of glucose in plasma and red blood cells from humans. Management of canine diabetes can be considered successful when the clinical signs of diabetes mellitus improve. After the animal has been stabilized successfully, routine rechecks should be carried out around every 2–4 months.
Careful monitoring and control during maintenance will help to limit the long-term complications associated with diabetes. The aim of therapy is not to produce a series of blood glucose concentrations that are within the reference range but to produce a blood glucose curve that approaches the reference range, avoiding potentially fatal hypoglycemia.
Important Safety InformationVetsulin should not be used in dogs or cats known to have a systemic allergy to pork or pork products. The average American consumes 22 to 28 teaspoons of added sugar a day mostly in the form of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) or ordinary table sugar (sucrose).  Since its peak in 1999, intake from total sugars is down 8% and HFCS is down approximately 9% for the same time period, yet our obesity rates continue to rise dramatically during this same time period. First I would like to remind everyone that sugar from any source in non-nutritive, in other words – it’s just calories.  With few exceptions (like agave and corn syrup), most sweeteners and naturally occurring sugars in fruit break down into roughly half fructose and half glucose in the body (see the chart below). It is recommended that women should consumer no more than 100 calories (6 ? teaspoons) and men 150 calories (9 ? teaspoons) from added sugars a day, which is roughly 5% of a 2,000 a day diet.  It’s the excess that leads to the problems. Limit fruit juice consumption to no more than 6-8 ounces a day.  Avoid sugar-sweetened beverages. Limit all added sugars (see chart above).  Even Agave syrup, which has become popular among the health conscious, it may be low on the glycemic index, but it will still affect your triglyceride level more than HFCS. Eat a balanced diet and get most of your calories from fruits, vegetables, grains, milk, meat, fish, poultry, and oils.  That doesn’t leave much room for empty calories! I see an Endocrinologist twice a year, mainly to go over blood work (they check various thyroid levels, glucose, and cortisol.) Everything is great except my cortisol levels. This entry was posted in Health and tagged graves disease, Health, How to relax, Stress by Dina. I am sorry your body is stressed right now, I know that when I get stressed, I handle it poorly. Blood sugar imbalance (low blood sugar or high blood sugar) is a condition in which your body does not handle glucose effectively.
This is a HUGE topic, and well beyond the scope of an article, but we will hit the highlights in a nutshell.
Throughout the day blood glucose levels may fluctuate outside of the bodies desired blood glucose range. There are many symptoms associated with low blood sugar but the following ones are most common. You can also experience what we call a ‘low blood sugar crash’ which may result in a combination of all the low blood sugar symptoms.
When you consume concentrated sugars or refined grains there is a rapid rise in your blood sugar levels.   Insulin is then released from your pancreas and begins to open channels on cell membranes allowing glucose to travel from the blood into body cells. In some individuals, too much insulin is released in response to a carbohydrate or sugar rich meal. When insulin is high, lots of cell glucose channels become opened which results in the blood glucose level dropping too low.
This can also contribute to the cycle of subsequent sugar cravings throughout the day as the body cries out for an immediate source of sugar to bring blood sugar levels up again quickly. Many people intuitively know that they have a blood sugar problem but wonder if they should get a medical diagnosis.  They ask us if they should get a blood test. Blood tests are great for letting you know if you have HIGH blood sugar but we haven’t found them to be an accurate indicator of low blood sugar problems, your symptoms will give you a much more accurate picture. If you answer ‘yes’ to several of the following questions or say ‘yes’ to just one of the questions marked with a double asterisk (**) then you can safely assume that you have a low blood sugar problem known as hypoglycemia.

Very Important Note: Did you know that ALL type 2 diabetes (onset diabetes) is preceded by untreated low blood sugar problems?  In other words, if you have a Low Blood Sugar issue and you don’t fix it, you are a prime candidate for type 2 diabetes.
There can come a time when your cells have let in too much insulin and start now resist letting any more enter.  This is called insulin resistance. If insulin resistance (precursor to type 2 diabetes) is not corrected, eventually the pancreas will become exhausted and no longer be able to produce adequate amounts of insulin. This is how low blood sugar issues that are not nutritionally remedied will lead to diabetes. The good news is you can reverse low blood sugar and type 2 diabetes.  Here are the first steps in that process. Chromium: is a naturally occurring trace mineral that enhances insulin’s effect in the body, improving the uptake of glucose, causing better blood circulation and maintenance of blood sugar level. Most food today is very low in chromium, especially refined flour and refined sugars and sweets of all kinds, including even fruits. Add one chromium picolinate (from our online store) twice a day for additional blood sugar balancing. L-glutamine is an amino acid that your body can use as emergency fuel.  For example, if you have a blood sugar crash, from either eating sugar and then crashing or from going too long without food, reach for l-glutamine instead of sugar.
It is has also been proven effective for reducing any type of cravings for carbs or sweets including alcohol. Coaching on these and other health issues are provided through my Inner Circle coaching program or Consultation Packages.

Although this method comes with its own fair share of advantages, it also has some drawbacks in that the color change may be sensitive and thus rendering it inaccurate.
Having low sugar level in your urine is a normal phenomenon during pregnancy, but when the tests show an elevated sugar level in a couple of prenatal visits or its high in one visit, then probably it could be a sign of gestational diabetes. When you have excess protein in your urine, it could mean that you have urinary tract infection, kidney damage or a certain disorder.
Usually when you are not getting enough carbohydrates, your body will start breaking down ingested or stored fat to provide your body with essential energy.
Your medical doctor may need to examine your sample and screen it for certain enzymes produced by white blood cells or nitrites from certain bacteria. Every time on your routine prenatal visits, you will be provided with a specimen cup with an antiseptic wipe, then you will be sent to the rest room and asked to produce and give your urine sample. First of all, wash your hands and then separate your labia with clean fingers, clean your vulva with the wipe from the front to back.
Urinate for a couple of seconds, and slip the cup under the stream to collect enough urine for the sample.
The nurse will then record the results on your medical chart which the midwife or doctor will always review when seeing you.
If your medical practitioner suspects that you have urinary tract infection depending on the results on the urine dipstick or tangible symptoms, they may get your specimen sent to the lab for culture purposes. If a reading seems unusual or does not match the clinical signs, a second reading should be taken or another method used to confirm the blood glucose measurement.
Please note that for a dog on twice-daily dosing the curve will appear very similar, but just within a 12-hour time period. High cortisol levels are no laughing matter and I need to get these levels down to ensure my continued good health.
Swinging from being very high after a meal, stimulant or stress, to being very low, say if you skipped a meal. But if too much sugar or refined carbohydrates are consumed the blood sugar goes to high, causing high insulin and resulting in yet another crash. It then becomes impossible to achieve perfect blood sugar balance and insulin dependent diabetes ensues.
Your best protein sources are from humanely raised (grass fed or pasture raised without hormones or antibiotics) animal products ie eggs, full fat dairy (not milk), wild (not farmed) fish, beef, bison, lamb, poultry, etc.

For instance, if prompt analysis is not undertaken immediately after removing the dipstick out of the urine sample, color changes may not be accurate if it is exposed to air for some time out of the sample.
If ita€™s accompanied by high blood pressure later in the pregnancy, it could be a sign of preeclampsia. However, if you experience severe nausea and some vomiting or even weight loss, your urine will be examined for presence of ketones. These two can be a sign of UTI, and if they show up in any of the dipstick test, then they will be taken to a lab for culture or a sensitivity test.
Ita€™s done using a test dipstick which is dipped into the sample urine and then the results are compared to a chart. The urine sample intended for culture purposes is collected using the same method discussed or detailed above, but only the specimens cup for collection needs to be very sterile.
It also finds out which type of bacteria is contained in the specimen and what antibiotic can be used to treat the infection.
If the dog exercises at home during the day, the same exercise routine should be adhered to while the dog is in the clinic. Graves Disease is an immune disorder that results in the overproduction in thyroid hormone. Cortisol is a hormone secreted by the adrenal gland that is involved in many biological functions such as glucose metabolism, immune function, and regulation of blood pressure.
Therefore, it becomes very useful in certain health care settings such as urgent care facilities, emergency departments or even the doctora€™s office.
In addition, information provided by the dipstick may be limited as it generally relies on qualitative analysis rather than quantitative results. This test might also apply even when your urine tests are normal between 24 and 28 weeks in order to confirm this condition. Your sample may require lab analysis if you have excess protein in the urine and your blood pressure is normal. In case your urine test indicates high ketone and you cana€™t just eat or consume any food or liquid, you may need medication or intravenous fluids. Basically, the culture will just show if you have the condition such as UTI and the sensitive test shows the specific antibiotics which can be used to treat the condition or infection.
If the same specimen for urine dipstick was done or collected using sterile cup, then there is no need for another sample collection since it can still be used for culture.
As with all insulin products, careful patient monitoring for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia is essential to attain and maintain adequate glycemic control and prevent associated complications. There are two treatments for Graves Disease, thyroid removal or Radioactive Iodine, which is absorbed by the thyroid and destroys its’ tissue.
My levels are very high and have been over a period of years and they have even tested me for Cushing’s Syndrome but I do not have it. This method is very effective in terms of cost and does not require any training or specialization to perform the test. However, diabetes could also be a sign if the ketones are found in combination with high sugar. However, the medical doctor can put you on some antibiotics as you await the lab results, especially if you show symptoms of UTI. The safety and effectiveness of Vetsulin in puppies and kittens, breeding, pregnant, and lactating dogs and cats has not been evaluated. In some cases where the Radioactive Iodine is administered, the thyroid retains some function. I do take medication to make sure my thyroid levels stay normal but have been lucky and I have very few issues.
