The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has a long standing history of collaborative work with indigenous peoples. To build on this major achievement and ensure political commitments are translated into action, IDF is kick starting a dedicated roadmap of action focussed on indigenous peoples. Our activities began earlier in March when IDF co-hosted an expert meeting with the World Diabetes Foundation on Indigenous People, Diabetes and Development.
The main purpose of the meeting was to build consensus around the burden of diabetes and related Non-communicable Diseases amongst indigenous peoples; and identify specific areas of intervention to address prevention and access to care for indigenous populations. Following this meeting, IDF will continue to work with indigenous peoples to raise awareness of the issue and take actions to improve health. We hope  through  collaboration and sheer determination, we can raise awareness of the issues affecting the health of indigenous peoples, build the evidence base and implement actions to address the existing health disparities  -  with an ultimate goal of improving the lives of indigenous peoples.
