More than half of people with narcolepsy also experience sudden episodes of muscle weakness where their whole body just collapses. A specific study, called a multiple sleep latency test, is also necessary to diagnose narcolepsy.

A test would have exhibited that the insulin extract had induced so rapid a drop in blood-sugar that the dogs endured extreme insulin shock. Then, in 1916, Sir Edward Sharpey-Schafer contemplated that the islets of Langerhans produced a substance without which diabetes would build up.
One evening, while he was setting up a lecture to be given the next day, he got a copy of a medical journal and was drawn in by an article written by Moses Barron. Banting won over Professor MacLeod of the University of Toronto Medical School that he had a promising approach to the diabetes problem. In January, 1922, after several more setbacks, Banting and Best accomplished what looked like an actual experimental success. And on February 11, 1922, Joe Gilchrist became the first diabetic human being to get an injection of insulin. This no-calorie sweetener, found in sugar-free gums, candies, some baked goods and even some toothpaste, is dangerous to dogs even in tiny amounts.
Veterinary scientists are still trying to find out why grapes and raisins can be fatal even in small doses for some dogs while having no effect on others. Because it contains the compounds theobromine and caffeine, chocolate can be dangerous for dogs, depending on the kind and the amount eaten. Despite the popularity of raw food diets for dogs, raw meat, poultry, fish and eggs can contain harmful bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Never feed your dog anything containing alcohol or caffeine and never give any human medicine without your vet’s permission.
In a crisis, you can call any pet poison control center where, for a small fee, you can talk with a vet who will answer your emergency questions. If it is, you’re not going to learn the answer to your question — because reading the answer will put you to sleep! This test measures your brain waves, eye movements, muscle activity, heartbeat, blood oxygen levels and breathing while you’re sleeping. Modafinil (Provigil), armodafinil (Nuvigil), methylphenidate (Ritalin, others) and dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine) are stimulants commonly used to treat narcolepsy. That includes driving, and even smoking, because of the danger of falling asleep with a lit cigarette in your hand. Insulin, or something a lot like it, was drawn out from the pancreas in 1908 by a German scientist, Georg Zuelzer. Even without the blood-sugar test, had Zuelzer used diabetic rather than healthy dogs in the tests, his extract would have developed relief of symptoms instead of shock. There had to be something in the pancreas, most probably in the islets of Langerhans, that somehow had a part in the onset of diabetes. Having MacLeod's backing and blessing, as well as the facilities of his lab, Banting went to work. An occasional bite of a sandwich, a lick or two of ice cream or a tablespoon of leftover stew on top of a bowl of kibble can be a welcome treat and a bonding experience.
Ingestion, usually from eating discarded gum or candy, causes a rapid drop in blood sugar levels and will ultimately cause liver failure. The toxicity level is unknown, so it’s best to avoid feeding any grapes or raisins to your pup. The rule of thumb is, the darker the chocolate, the greater the danger, with baking chocolate and cocoa powder being the most toxic. Garlic is even used as a flavoring in some dog treats (dogs love it) and commercially made dog food should cause no problems. Raw bones can lodge in a dog’s throat and cooked bones can splinter and, if swallowed, can cause intestinal damage. Steamed or boiled carrots, green beans, kale stems, ripe tomatoes, asparagus, cauliflower, store-bought mushrooms and even avocado (bad for birds, rabbits and horses) make tasty, healthy dog treats.
Each month our magazines are dedicated to the celebration of all that is exceptional in our communities. They could be the side effect of a medication you’re taking, or could result from stress, depression or inadequate sleep at night. Sleep can occur often and at inappropriate times, for example, when you’re talking, eating or driving. And many with narcolepsy experience brief memory lapses or blackouts caused by very short periods of sleep. It can help rule out other explanations that could account for your daytime sleepiness, such as sleep apnea. It measures how quickly you fall asleep for a daytime nap, and also reveals whether and how quickly you enter rapid eye movement (REM) sleep during your nap. Always seek the advice of your healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding your medical condition.

And Zuelzer would today be among medicine's immortals, not an obscure scientist whose name is all but forgotten. Allen, of Allen diet fame, was prominent among those who opposed the possibility of "organ therapy" and felt that there was nothing inside the pancreas that can be used to treat diabetes. Barron had written that when gallstones choked up the pancreatic ducts, the part of the pancreas that produced the digestive juices shrank—but the islets of Langerhans were unharmed. By tying off the pancreatic ducts of dogs for six to eight weeks, the regular pancreatic tissue would degenerate.
Then, one day in July, 1921, just as they were seesawing on the threshold of defeat, came the first gleam of possible success.
But there are some foods that are safe for humans but bad (very bad) for your fuzzy best friend.
The first effects, disorientation and seizures, can begin in as few as 30 minutes after eating.

Some dogs suffer from repeated vomiting and diarrhea within ten hours after eating and some become lethargic. Dogs that have eaten chocolate can develop tachycardia (very fast heart rate), abdominal distress, restlessness, tremors and death. But larger amounts can cause digestive system inflammation and hemolytic anemia (damage to red blood cells). Seeds of these fruits can contain cyanide, but smaller seeds (like apples and cherries) will pass through a dog’s dietary tract intact and won’t cause ill effects.
Some dogs are allergic to certain foods; the allergy usually manifests as skin and stomach problems. From the inspirational women we promote to interesting topics such as health, beauty and fashion to what's going on locally in each community, we strive to keep today's women connected to the things they need and want. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking it because of something you have read in a public group(s). As with any public forum on any site, this information may also appear in third-party search engines like Google, MSN, Yahoo, etc. Zuelzer, unable to know exactly why the dogs died, determined that the substance was too dangerous. Moreover, wrote Barron, when dogs had their pancreatic ducts tied off the same thing occurred. Where the whole pancreas was destroyed except the islets of Langerhans, the dogs did not get diabetes and die. Then, taking out what was left and making an extract of the still-functioning islets, Banting should have the answer. Another in a long series of extracts was produced and injected into a diabetic dog —and this time the dog miraculously improved. The dog had to receive a steady supply of the mysterious substance its very own missing pancreas can no longer give. A dog that has consumed anything containing xylitol needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and blood tests. In addition, the alcohol produced by the yeast can cause serious levels of alcohol intoxication, which can be fatal.
Pet poison control hotlines can calculate possible problems based on a dog’s weight and the type of chocolate eaten. In 1920, he was a young orthopedic surgeon who found it so difficult to make a living at his profession that he took up part-time teaching at the Western Ontario Medical School. The part of the pancreas that made the digestive juices degenerated, but the islet cells proceeded to function and the dogs lived. Therefore, there had to be something in the islets of Langerhans which, if removed, produced diabetes and death. Gilchrist had life-threatening diabetes; and the Allen diet, though it kept him alive, had brought him down to a scant shadow of life. As with Zuelzer, the blood test that would have shown the significance of the work wasn't yet available.
Onion and garlic powder and onion soup mixes are even more hazardous because they are concentrated.
