Starting March 1st 2012 Diabetes education will be offered in the form of a free introductory to diabetes session. Insulin is a peptide hormone secreted by the pancreas in response to increases in blood sugar, usually following a meal. After a meal, the amount of insulin secreted into the blood increases as blood sugar rises.
If these nutrients are shuttled primarily into muscle cells, then the muscles grow and body fat is managed. Without enough insulin, you lose all of the anabolic effects, since there is not enough insulin to transport or store energy or nutrients.
Continual elevation of insulin leads to large amounts of fat gain and risk for cardiovascular disease. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by obesity (particularly central deposition adiposity, or fat around the middle and deep in the abdominal cavity), cardiovascular disease, systemic inflammation, and the poor ability of muscles to store nutrients, which leads to muscle wasting and fat storage as well as nutrients circulating in the blood.
Insulin resistance, and its associated metabolic syndrome, is a step along the road to type 2 diabetes. Due to the anabolic power of insulin, many over-fat individuals want to avoid insulin release. You need insulin, but the trick is to learn how to balance the anabolic effects in muscle tissue against the fat storage effects.
Aim for a moderate carbohydrate consumption (~40% of diet) with an emphasis on fibrous carbohydrates like vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Investigate chromium and alpha lipoic acid, and make sure intake is adequate (but not excessive). While the glycemic and insulin indices of many foods are similar, some foods cause unexpected responses. The purpose of nutrient timing is to maximize insulin’s anabolic effects while minimizing its other problematic side effects. Alpha lipoic acid may increase glucose uptake in the cell by recruiting glucose transporters.
Some people who are not obese by traditional measures are still at risk for insulin resistance anyway, particularly individuals with one or more close relatives who are diabetic, as well as many people of South Asian ethnic origin. Many bodybuilders have experimented with injecting insulin in an attempt to maximize insulin’s anabolic effects.

While nutritional ketosis is perfectly safe, ketoacidosis is an indicator of serious health problems. There are three types of ketone bodies: Acetone, Acetoacetate and Beta-Hydroxybutryate (BHB). It's the most accurate way to measure ketone bodies, beta-bydroxybutryate (BHB, although not technically a ketone body). According to Volek and Phinney in The Art and Science of Low-Carbohydrate Living (chapter 13, Ketones - To Measure or Not), a non-invasive and cheap alternative is to measure breath acetone concentration. The Ketonix Acetone Breathalyzer is available and offers an easy and inexpensive way to test your breath ketones (acetone). Ketostix, Uriscan and other urine detection strips are not as accurate and may not work for some people. Some people use them to test if they are sensitive to certain foods that may be keto-friendly but still have a negative effect on their weight loss.
As mentioned above, although your body may produce ketone bodies which you can measure in your blood stream, Ketostix only show excess ketone bodies excreted via urine. Most people believe that in order to lose as much fat as possible, they need to restrict their carbs intake as much as they can.
Also, when becoming keto-adapted, some individuals tolerate relatively greater carbohydrate intakes without disrupting ketosis.

I've been in nutritional ketosis on and off for almost two years and can't really complain about urine strips. To easily increase your fat intake on a ketogenic diet, try fat bombs - snacks with at least 80% fat content. Regardless of which type of meter you choose, you should have a handful of comparisons done between your metera€™s readings and a lab analyzer.
There is considerable variation dog to dog and meter to meter and the readings your meter gives can be anywhere from equal to lab values to slightly different (usually lower) to significantly different (again, usually your meter will give lower readings than the lab). In Chrisa€™ case, the OneTouch Ultra gave the most accurate readings for the meters we tried.
This chart shows comparisons made by testing Chris with different meters on a single sample of blood where the OneTouch Ultra was compared to the animal-adjusted AlphaTrak. Again, it's important to understand that you will have to test your meter with your dog to know how accurate it is for you.


Even if your meter readings are quite a bit different than lab values, a meter tells you one thing that no other testing or monitoring tool can—when your doga€™s blood sugar is low. Elbow callous – For medium to large dogs with a callous on the elbow, this is a popular place to test.
Ear – Vets often suggest the ear for testing but generally ita€™s not the easiest place to obtain a drop of blood from a dog. A less informative way to measure your doga€™s average blood sugar over a few hours at a time is urine testing. Blood ketone meters can precisely determine the level of ketones in your blood but they are also pricey. Keep in mind that breath ketones do not always exactly correlate with blood ketones and are affected by several factors (alcohol consumption and water intake). They only show excess ketone bodies excreted via urine (acetoacetate) but tell you nothing about the level of ketones in your bloodstream (BHB) which is most probably higher. I slipped into ketosis by lowering my carbs to my comfort zone and increasing animal fats, also to my comfort zone, so at first I did not know I was in ketosis until the signs appeared: headache and cramps, which I took care of right away (salt and water) and have been in ketosis now for 3 weeks very comfortably.
