Craving some waffles but don’t want all the butter, refined sugar and bleached flour? To prove to you guys how different two waffles (of equal deliciousness!) can be, I made a nutrition label comparison between my healthy waffle recipe and IHOP’s Belgian Waffles. When you look at the ingredient list, all of the ingredients except the applesauce are technically low-carb. The yeast, the unsweetened almond milk, the eggs, coconut flour and erythritol are all low-carb. Want to receive an email notification when there's a brand new blog post?Subscribe by email! DIY Protein Bars: Easy, Healthy, Homemade No-Bake Treats That Taste Like Dessert, But Just Happen To Be Packed With Protein is a collection of 48 ahhhmazing protein bar recipes! Have you ever wondered if applesauce is as good for you as apples since, well, it seems to be pretty much just made up of apples right?
Sure, the primary ingredient is you guessed it… apples, but that doesn’t mean that they’re equal in regards to nutrition. Research is proving that this old saying has a lot of truth – eating apples does help to reach a longer, healthier life.
Let’s take a look at some of the points to consider when choosing between apples or applesauce. Both applesauce and apples will provide you the same amount of fiber, 3 grams per cup (cup of raw apple slices or a cup of applesauce). Men and women are different: men should get about 38 grams daily and women should get about 25 grams. So for fiber, the question is which you prefer and how much fiber should you be adding to your diet?
But if you’re on the go, exercising, training or just a very active person then the applesauce may make more sense. The glycemic index for apples is 38 – a very low number and a main reason apples are a great diet food. The glycemic index for unsweetened applesauce is 53 – about the same as pineapple, bananas, grapes, or corn tortillas. What this means is, you can eat a lot more calories with applesauce, and the calories are much more quickly converted to blood sugar.
The Glycemic Index is a number that rates how fast a food is converted to glucose within the human body. Too much glucose in the blood too fast will cause the body to produce insulin to bring it back down, which is not good. So applesauce is not nearly as good as the low cal, slow release of apples, but better than most foods and still considered quite good. Your body needs carbohydrates since it’s one of the easiest nutrients to transform into energy.

In regards to carbohydrates, raw apples are the lesser again… if you’re following a low-carb diet then you probably want to choose raw apples. If you need more potassium in your diet, then this time around it’s the applesauce you should likely choose. Fresh fruits and veggies are well-known for providing plenty of vitamins and minerals we need.
In one study, individuals who ate apples and pears daily lost more weight than those who ate the same number of calories in the form of oat cookies.
In this recent study, women showed 25% lower blood fat levels from eating 2 apples a day, which is better than results from prescription medicines.
Raw apples are better, but somewhat limited since most people find it difficult to eat more than one apple a day. By eating applesauce a few times a week, you will benefit from its natural fiber, nutrients and healing properties.
Conclusion: Applesauce is a good diet food that you can eat by itself, and can easily be added to many recipes. By Marjory December 17, 2013 9 Comments Homemade crock pot apple butter is easy to make and allows control over the amount of added sugar.
It was only a matter of time before I began to ponder making a homemade batch of crock pot apple butter that had less sugar.
A note on apples: Because I planned to cut back on the sugar, I used sweet honey crisp apples. 5 from 1 reviews Low-Sugar Crock Pot Apple Butter   Print Crock pot apple butter is easy to make and allows control over the amount of added sugar.
Ok…so I made apple butter from another recipe before I found yours, and it is so sweet I am tempted to toss it down the drain! I like my applesauce a little chunky, so after 6 hours I stirred it and immediately poured it into my hot glass jars and within 5 minutes they were sealed.
Specials, News, and Recipes from our blog:Crab Puffs I have been making these crab puffs for as long as I can remember. As much as I am a chocolate lover, sometimes you need something light and fruity during these hot summer months.
In a large bowl, beat the cake mix, oranges, egg whites and applesauce on low speed for 2 minutes. Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Brownies are my favourite dessert of all-time and they’re also one of the easiest desserts to add a healthy spin to. You know when you make ordinary brownies and melt butter and dark chocolate together?
Stir together the dry ingredients, add in the wet ingredients and bake the whole thing in the oven for 20 minutes. While I only let the dough rise for one hour (I couldn’t wait!) these were the best waffles I ever made. I would suggest proofing the dough for one hour at night, cover and refrigerate it overnight, then pop them in the waffle maker in the morning.
But believe it or not, which one you eat (or you decide to give to your kids) might have a lot to do with your dietary preferences and needs. Getting enough fiber will help your digestion system work more efficiently and also keep you feeling fuller for longer. A cup of applesauce on the other hand, will consist of about 167 calories (a bit less if they use Stevia).
It is bad for your health for many reasons and results in type 2 diabetes for far too many Americans.

A cup of raw apples will give you about 17 grams while a cup of applesauce will give you about 43 grams. Potassium is important for many things, such as healthy heart functioning and muscle contraction.
Vitamin C particularly helps your body heal wounds more effectively and repair bones and teeth. Not only will you experience greater health, you can use applesauce as an appetite suppresser while enjoying its sweet and delicious taste. But many people find applesauce easier to take and it doesn’t use up your limited willpower to add to your diet. I thought I was perfectly happy with strawberry jam and an occasional applesauce replacement for oil. Mix together brown sugar and spices (except for the vanilla) and toss with the apple slices. Cover and cook on low for 10 hours.
So instead of just adding a picture to last years post, I decided to post it again since it is not only easy, but really good! Do you make the cake mix with the ingredients that are listed on the back, or do you exclusively use what you’re listing here? Around 30 minutes later I was staring open-mouthed at one of the most delicious brownies I’ve ever eaten, ever ever ever! If you are an active person then you need more calories than someone who isn’t very active. My husband is diabetic so would I want to use tart apples also instead of all sweet apples.
I have made two batches of apple crisp, caramel apple cupcakes and two batches of applesauce already. Seriously – by the time I’ve finished, the recipe only makes half the amount of brownies it was supposed to! However, there are medical conditions that can affect this so talk to your doctor about your potassium levels if you’re unsure.
I have a long list of other recipes I would love to make and share with you, but whenever I can share a canning recipe that is so darn easy and something you can enjoy all winter long, I want to get it out as soon as the season hits, even if it is more than once. Which is why I need to stock up on as many recipes for low calorie healthy brownies that I can and this one is certainly a keeper. I always use homemade applesauce at home – just peel, core and chop some apples and cook them until soft in a saucepan with some water then mash them up. My kids are allergic to dairy, egg, wheat, soy, peanut, poultry, chickpeas, avocado, and bananas… they are so limited in other ways that we try not to avoid real sugar in occasional treats like this.
Then, I mixed it into a caramel sauce and made Cranberry Apple Caramel Popcorn…and it was divine.
Come back and visit the next few weeks for more great apple, pumpkin and possibly pear recipes.
But you can just as easily use store-bought unsweetened applesauce if you’ve got it handy. I like a chunky apple sauce so I go ahead and jar them up (after I have washed my jars and lids). The jar of apple butter quickly disappeared as my daughter slathered it on top of her pancakes. If you like a smooth applesauce, you can cook a little longer and stir until it’s the consistency you like or puree your applesauce in a food processor.
