The glycemic index (GI) is a scale used to rank the effect a foods carbohydrates has on raising blood glucose levels after eating.
Glucose is normally chosen as the reference food (see GI measurement) as it has the fastest effect of raising blood glucose levels when consumed. Low GI foods rank between 0-55, moderate GI foods between 56-69 and high GI foods are over 70.
Foods positioned low down on the scale are those which are slowly digested and absorbed by the body. Referred to as low GI foods, they produce gradual rises in insulin and blood glucose levels after eating. High GI foods are quickly digested and absorbed by the body and cause marked fluctuations in blood sugar and insulin levels.
The graph shows the typical effect of low GI and high GI food on blood glucose levels over a 2 hour period. However the high GI food gives rise to a much higher level of blood glucose compared to a low GI food. After 2 hours blood glucose levels are significantly reduced being much closer to baseline before the food was consumed. After 2 hours the blood glucose levels from high GI food is still elevated more than the blood glucose level from the low GI food. Diabetes can be any one of several metabolic diseases that affect the way the body metabolizes glucose, this means that for many people staying above the low blood sugar range can be a real concern. When a diabetic or someone suffering from a similar metabolic disease begins to suffer from low blood sugar it is important that they get some type of simple sugar into their body while they are still conscious and able to swallow correctly.
If the sugar continues to fall into the low blood sugar range unconsciousness will quickly result. To be fair it was only a 2-day course, there was a lot of content to cover and  its understandable that the course didn’t go into full nerd-level with detail. All of us (ok many of us) want to get stronger and in order to do so its definitely important to lift heavy; however, as counterintuitive as it may seem in many cases we actually need to lift less (weight) in order to lift more. When we train our lifts and are nearing our 100 percentiles, technique almost always starts to slide and at a certain point we end up muscling our way through on sheer stubbornness and will-power.
Everything we do (an airsquat, picking up a barbell, picking our nose) is initiated and controlled by rapidly moving electrical impulses that are transmitted through our bodies via tiny cells called neurons. My first attempted snatch (with a 33lb barbell) ended with me flat on my ass fighting back tears and (probably) blushing bright red because I had dropped the bar right onto my shins (which where already raw from rope climbs) …. If you want to get stronger and see results you definitely should be lifting weights and training heavy, HOWEVER during regular training sessions only go as heavy as you can while maintaining good technique.
So keep in mind that there is a difference between practicing, competing and testing and that practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

While diabetes isn’t the only culprit, it is usually to blame whenever a person suffers a bout of low blood sugar, and low blood sugar can lead to feeling weak, the inability to think clearly, and even coma and death. Fruit juices, sugar, non-diet colas, and candy are great sources of fast acting sugars that can quickly raise the blood sugar level. Never attempt to give any type of food or drink to an unconscious or nearly unconscious person as this can lead to the material being sucked into the lungs which will result in a severe infection or death. To be fair for a lot of people knowing that Crossfit elicits a higher NE Response and this in turn can lead to better results is enough;  however, as coaches and trainers I think it is our responsibility to actually understand what is going on and not throw the word around. This is is why it is so important to have consistent feedback (usually from a coach or training partner) that enables us to detect and correct errors as soon as they appear. It should be remembered, however, that these types of sugars are a quick-fix, and will rapidly raise the blood sugar level and just as rapidly be depleted and allow it to fall. If the person has lost consciousness due to low blood sugar the only way to take care of the problem is by rapid emergency medical treatment which will consist of a glucose solution being given directly into the bloodstream via IV.

Not realizing when we make mistakes (or being too lazy to fix them) results in the development of incorrect movement patterns  and unlearning them is both difficult and time-consuming. This is where you should be training, the point where the weight starts to challenge your technique, and don’t move up until you can get through all the sets and reps with good form. In order for blood sugar to be maintained for the long term, the person suffering from a low blood sugar range needs complex carbohydrates like peanut butter and crackers, or better yet a full meal.
