Nearly all carbohydrate rich foods contain glucose, however some are a more concentrated source than others. Do you think you suffer from a food intolerance such as Lactose or Fructose or perhaps Small-intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome (SIBOS)? Objective: Consumption of green-leafy vegetables is being advocated beneficial for type 2 diabetes mellitus individuals possibly because they are cost effective source of potent biological antioxidants.

Mary's complaints ranged from fatigue and anxiousness to crying and flying off the handle frequently. The rise in popularity of processed sugars has occurred quickly in the last half of the twentieth century, and our bodies' biochemistry hasn't adapted well.
Americans interpret those signals as a need to grab a sweet snack or cola: The seesawing of blood glucose all day long creates many uncomfortable symptoms. To understand how these symptoms can develop, you need to know how our glucose metabolism works. 1) Unstable moods, frequent mood swings: Frequent changes in mood are a symptom of hypoglycemia. 13) Nervous exhaustion, excessive fatigue: This means feeling as if you are coming apart at the seams or are strung out emotionally.
18) Feelings of suspicion, paranoia: Hypoglycemics may experience these feelings as a result of altered brain chemistry.
20) Anxiety: In this context, anxiety refers to an ongoing state, rather than concern about specific events. 21) Fearfulness: Fear of people and places usually is rooted in the biochemical status of the brain.
23) Night sweats: Yhis indicates exhausted adrenals due to continual demands for emergency adrenalin to raise falling blood sugar levels. 25) Noticeable lift after one alcoholic drink: Alcohol is more potent than other sugars and acts faster to reach the brain and relieve hypoglycemic symptoms. 28) Irritability, sudden anger: The sudden outpouring of adrenalin to stop the fall in blood sugar, can and does trigger sudden irritability and anger.
35) Difficulty awakening in the morning: This problem occurs among nutritionally malnourished persons.
1) Adopt the hypoglycemic diet explained in this chapter and follow it faithfully for three weeks. 2) For those who need a powerful push to make change happen, the reality of looking at your own five-hour glucose tolerance test is invaluable. Instructions: Check off each symptom in one of the columns to indicate the degree of severity that applies to you. At Health Recovery Center, we have urged our clients to have the Glucose Tolerance Test because the actual lab evidence seems to propel clients into action better than if we force the diet on them with no scientific confirmation.

Standardised methods for the determination of antioxidant capacity and phenolics in foods and dietary supplements. Do not take any over-the-counter medications for 12 hours before the test, such as cough or cold preparations, vitamins, aspirin, etc. She didn't correlate these dietary habits with her complaints of no energy and feeling weak, lightheaded, shaky, and anxious. He had been unable to work for six months due to anxiety, depression, dizziness, mental confusion and insomnia. Some doctors call it a FAD disease and refuse to do the lab tests necessary to prove or disprove your suspicions. His high dose prescription sent me to the medical section of the public library for more facts. As blood glucose levels shoot up after eating refined sugars, the pancreas pours out high amounts of insulin trying to control the rising tide of sugar in our bloodstream. Gyland himself experienced many of these symptoms as young man beginning his medical practice. Our bodies convert all foods to glucose, but the change from refined sugars and white flours (starches) is at a much faster rate. Otherwise you will plunge into deep shock and if this drop continues with no interruption, you will die! Measure depression by asking yourself if, when you take your emotional temperature, you often feel sad inside. Some hypoglycemics also have abnormally low blood pressure and may feel light-headed when they stand up suddenly. Sleepiness in the late afternoon might also be caused by declining glucose levels (hypoglycemia).

Don't feel discouraged if your score is high; it is only a barometer of your present emotional and physical state. However, many of the readers of my first book were unable, financially or geographically, to take advantage of lab work.
Furthermore, this study also investigated influence of these vegetables juice on starch and glucose induced postprandial glycemic load.
After the sugar challenge, Mary lost even more brain fuel, which gradually increased her lightheadedness and disorientation. I discovered I could expect cortisone to bestow a moon-face, a buffalo hump on my upper shoulders and very unstable mental state. My glucose level soared into the diabetic range and then dropped like a roller coaster down to insulin-shock levels.
Too much insulin destroys our brains' only source of fuel, (glucose) and instead creates a state of mild to serious insulin shock. When he became so incapacitated he could no longer work in medicine, he began a futile search for help from major medical centers across the US, including the famed Mayo Clinic. Ideally, when too much sugar floods the bloodstream, our pancreas pumps out just the right amount of extra insulin to counteract the overload. Fortunately, the physical stress being produced will eventually release the adrenal hormone, epinephrine, which signals the liver to pour its emergency sugar, glycogen into your blood.
If, when you finish a meal, you are still looking in the refrigerator for more, you are probably seeking something sweet because your hi-pasta or hi-carbo meal has set off a hypoglycemic drop in your blood sugar.
If you have puzzled over noticeable changes in your moods, thoughts and feelings don't be so quick to accept them as psychological disorders.
The changes occur in the course of twenty-four hours, in contrast to the mood swings of manic depression, which occur over weeks or months. Once your specific problems are identified, we will get on with the job of repairing the damage. Add up the number of the checks in each column and multiply by the number printed at the top of each column.
Materials and Methods: Phytochemical constituents, in vitro free radicals scavenging antioxidant and enzymes inhibitory activities were evaluated applying various reported methods. In fact, PPHG or hyperglycemia induced oxidative stress has been identified recently as an important pathophysiological link between diabetes mellitus and development of CVD [8] and diabetic complications. Starting with a normal fasting level, her blood sugar rose within half an hour to the diabetic range and then came plunging down one hundred seventy five points, putting her in a state of insulin shock. In her effort to supply her brain with glucose, Mary's daily regimen had included eight Mountain Dews and a high carbohydrate diet. Now we are averaging one hundred forty pounds per year, per person and our carbohydrate sensitive (hypoglycemic) population is at an all time high. I knew then I had to have a clear head and some energy to support three young children alone. I was trying to read during this six-hour test, and after three hours I kept rereading the same lines over and over with no comprehension.
Finally on his own, he pieced together the correct diagnosis of hypoglycemia, which he then verified with a six-hour glucose tolerance test.
This sugar stops further insulin shock and protects your brain by providing emergency glucose. Now you know that hypoglycemia can cause severe metabolic changes in your brain and nervous system, creating altered moods, emotional instability and behavior changes.
Post-prandial glycemic excursion was induced in rats pretreated with vegetables juice by oral administration of starch and glucose.
At the lowest point, she felt faint from weakness and dizziness and was overcome with confusion.
Her concern was that his frequent mood swings and mental confusion was affecting his income as a salesman, as well as their family life.
Because his cholesterol was close to 300, Jim's family doctor had given him a prescription, which he refused to touch. At that point, this same medical doctor called my husband to advise him that, if I would not continue his prescription, I should see a psychiatrist.
Since his recovery, he has contributed this valuable study that shows what percentage of twelve hundred patients report each of these common hypoglycemic symptoms. That insulin removes far too much sugar causing your blood sugar levels to fall far below normal. A report in Biological Psychiatry, 1982 of 67 subjects given a glucose tolerance test and measured throughout, produced measurable psychological symptoms as a result of the loss of glucose in the nerve cells. The Health Recovery Center Hypoglycemic Symptometer will help you evaluate your symptoms and decide if you want to seek verification with a lab test.
Results: All the leafy vegetables juice displayed potent free radicals scavenging activities.
All of her symptoms disappeared once she began a diet that corrected her acute response to refined sugars. As a busy young wife and mother of three, I skipped meals and snacked on cookies and mugs of coffee all day long for energy. Juice of amaranthus, rumex, palak and raphanus displayed potential anti-oxidative property by reducing H 2 O 2 induced hemolysis in rats red blood cells RBCs.
You may develop headaches; feel anxious, irritable, tired, dizzy, confused, forgetful, uncoordinated and unable to concentrate.
Caffeine produces these same symptoms by stimulating the adrenals to release stored glycogen in the same way, and temporarily raise blood sugar levels. Therefore, it is also being realized that antidiabetic prescriptions and dietary regimens developed based on European physiological conditions require different approach for these populations. As his brain lost its fuel, (glucose) he began to experience all of the familiar symptoms, and especially anxiety and confusion. Remarkably, her fasting blood sugar had now risen to the normal range and after the sugar challenge her blood sugar dipped only slightly instead of falling precipitously. As he described the symptoms of unstable glucose metabolism and its corresponding adrenal exhaustion, I felt like I was reading my own autobiography.
Alternanthera, ajwain, methi, amaranthus and sowa leaves juice displayed intestinal α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. His blood sugar rose to pre-diabetic levels and then plunged down 150 points leaving him anxious, shaking, lightheaded, and confused. At a time when I had to work, go back to college, and raise my family simultaneously, my brain was up to the task. Juice of raphanus, ajwain and sowa significantly mitigated starch-induced postprandial glycemic load.
Increased consumption of green, leafy vegetables have been observed to reduce risk of T2DM development. He willingly gave up caffeine, refined sugars and nicotine and the tradeoff has proved well worth the effort.

Amaranthus leaves juice potently mitigated glucose-induced postprandial glycemic load and also reduced hemoglobin glycation induced by glucose in vitro.
He was willing to switch to a whole foods diet and abandon all refined sugars and caffeine. Conclusions: This investigation finds that juice of leafy vegetables is potent source of biological antioxidants.
Furthermore, this research also investigated influence of these leafy vegetables' juice on starch and glucose induced postprandial hyperglycemic excursion (PPHGE) in rats. He exchanged his anti-depressant drugs for thyroid medication, which he needed, and the essential fatty acids that lifted his depression.
Instead I was given assorted prescriptions for tranquilizers and anti-anxiety drugs that only made me feel worse. Fine Chemicals Ltd (Mumbai, India).Green leafy vegetables and juice preparation Green leafy vegetables namely amaranthus (Amaranthus viridis L. His high cholesterol also came down dramatically, despite never having filled his anti-cholesterol prescription. Leaves were washed thoroughly in running water and paste was prepared by grinding weighed amount of leaves in food grade grinder. The paste was transferred on to sterilized clean muslin cloth and squeezed to the maximum to obtain juice.
Reaction mixture was incubated in dark for 60 minutes and total polyphenol content was measured spectrophotometrically at 765 nm. Decolourization of dark blue ABTS + cation due to the action of various dilutions of vegetable's juice was recorded spectrophotometrically at 734 nm. Suitable regression analysis was applied for calculation of concentration of juice required to scavenge 50% radical (SC 50 ). Absorbance values (230nm) of the reaction mixture were recorded at '0' min and then at every 10 th min up to 30 min spectrophotometrically. For each test sample a separate blank sample (devoid of H 2 O 2 ) was used for background subtraction. Amount of glycated hemoglobin in the reaction mixture was calculated by measuring absorbance at 443 nm.
After 20 min incubation at 50 o C, 10% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) was added to terminate reaction. Total reaction mixture volume was made up to 2 mL with isotonic phosphate buffer in eppendorf tubes. Closed tubes were placed in water bath (85-90΀C) for 10 min to develop color and cooled.
Percent enzyme inhibition was obtained applying formula mentioned above.Animal experimentsAnimal experiments were performed using male adult Wistar rats (180-220 g body weight). All experiments with live animals were performed in compliance with relevant laws and institutional guidelines. The next day forenoon blood was collected from the retro orbital plexus in EDTA-containing tubes.
Plasma glucose levels for basal ('0' hour) value were measured by glucose-oxidase test method using auto-blood analyzer.
Rats were divided into various groups (six rats in each group of starch-induced postprandial glycemia, and five rats in each group of glucose-induced postprandial glycemia). Fifteen minutes after green leafy vegetables juice administration starch tolerance test [19] and 30 minutes after leafy vegetable juice administration to rats' glucose tolerance test [26] was performed.
Blood was collected at intervals of 30, 60, 90, and 120 minute post-starch or glucose feeding.
It is important to mention here that juice of rumex leaves tasted sour, methi leaves juice slightly bitter, and ajwain juice hot. Wide quantitative differences in polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins and proteins content was observed in juice [Table 2].
Anthocyanins could be detected only in juice of alternanthera, methi, amaranthus, sowa and rumex leaves. Ajwain juice was most potent in scavenging DPPH radical followed by amaranthus, sowa and raphanus.
Rumex, amaranthus, alternanthera and palak leaves juice were more potent in scavenging H 2 O 2 than sowa, ajwain, methi and basella leave's juice.Fresh juice of raphanus and palak leaves prevented H 2 O 2 induced hemolysis by more than 50% [Table 3].
However, prevention of hemolysis was less than 50% by juices of rumex and amaranthus leaves.
Juice of alternanthera, ajwain, methi, amaranthus, sowa and rumex inhibited rat intestinal α-glucosidase [Table 3]. It was observed that in the order of potency, juice of alternanthera leaves was most potent followed by ajwain, methi and amaranthus leaves. Juice of rumex [Figure 1]a, methi and amaranthus [Figure 1]d moderately reduced starch induced postprandial glycemia. Analysis of this research finds that although all the juices studied displayed different activity potentials on various test models, only juice of amaranthus and rumex could display free radicals scavenging antioxidant activities on all the test systems studied.Presence of different class of antioxidant phytochemicals like polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and proteins in leafy vegetables juice might be held responsible for varying degree of antioxidant potentials.
Similarly, variations in their antioxidant mechanisms may originate by virtue of their synergistic and cooperative interactions with structural diversities present in free radicals generation systems. However, despite their chemical and mechanistic diversities, health benefit of vegetable antioxidants have been unequivocally reported for their health protective benefits, including decreased risk of developing various forms of chronic diseases [ 30] and greater likelihood of healthy aging. Therefore, attenuation of postprandial hyperglycemic excursion following starch rich diets have become important aspect for prevention and treatment of life-style associated diseases like T2DM, CVD and also in management of obesity. IGT is intermediate pre-diabetes state which often progresses to overt diabetes within a few years. Analysis of nine leafy vegetables juice in this study reveals that consumption of raphanus, ajwain and sowa leaves juice may help mitigate starch induced PPHGE and PPHG. Moderation in starch induced postprandial glycemic spikes by rumex, methi and amaranthus may be partially ascribed to their intestinal α-glucosidase inhibitory activity.
On the other hand, only amaranthus leaves juice could significantly tone down the glucose induced postprandial glycemic burden.
Therefore, consumption of amaranthus leaves juice could be beneficial in reducing glycemic burden either induced by starch and the glucose. In conclusion analysis in this research finds that juice of green leafy vegetables are rich source of biological antioxidant and may help counterbalance through diverse mechanisms hyperglycemia induced imbalanced antioxidant defense. In addition to the potent source of biological antioxidants, juice of ajwain and sowa can help mitigate starch induced PPHG possibly by slowing down starch digestion and amaranthus leaves juice keep within bounds glucose induced PPHG.
The mechanism by which raphanus and amaranthus leaves juice reduces starch and glucose induced PPHG respectively requires further investigation. This research was supported financially in part by project grant NaPAHA-CSC-0130 (CSIR- New Delhi).
