There are two different tests your doctor can use to measure your blood glucose to determine if you have pre-diabetes or diabetes: the fasting plasma glucose test (FPG) or the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). A new analysis of studies published in the Journal of Human Nutrition & Food Science reveals dietary magnesium intake combats diabetes and related conditions, such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. Based on information from the long-running National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, analysis found that NHANES study participants who meet the recommended daily magnesium intake are far less likely to be overweight or obese, have diabetes, metabolic syndrome, elevated blood pressure, or high cholesterol, compared to those who don’t meet the minimum standard. Indiana University researchers have found that magnesium intake may be beneficial in preventing pancreatic cancer. Data from the “VITamins and and Lifestyle study on over 66,000 men and women, ages 50 to 76, looking at the direct association between magnesium and pancreatic cancer and whether age, gender, body mass index, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs use and magnesium supplementation play a role. Prediabetics are more than diabetics and if you don’t manage this stage, chance of becoming diabetic is very high. A new study found that employees enrolled in a workplace intervention program as a group lost more weight, showed greater reductions in fasting blood sugar and ate less fat than employees who received only written health guidelines for diabetes prevention. Miller and colleagues enrolled 69 employees in the study: 35 received the 16-week lifestyle intervention, and 34 were assigned to receive usual care. Those in the lifestyle intervention met in groups of 10 to 15 participants weekly with dietitians who served as lifestyle coaches. In contrast, the control group was invited to attend one informational session on weight-loss principles and received a booklet developed by the National Diabetes Education Program containing guidelines on losing weight. All participants were urged to try to lose 7% of their body weight over the 16-week study period. Fasting glucose values dropped to near-normal levels in the intervention group and decreased in the control group, and both groups maintained fasting blood sugar reductions until the three-month follow-up. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most common form of kidney cancer, is expected to be diagnosed in over 60,000 new patients this year and claim approximately 14,000 lives, according to the American Cancer Society. A possible mechanism could be ingestion of meat-cooking mutagens, harmful compounds created when the meat is cooked in a certain way. A team of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, writing in the journal CANCER, found that a high-meat diet – through carcinogenic compounds created by high-temperature cooking – may lead to a higher risk for renal cell carcinoma.. To better characterize factors contributing to kidney cancer risk, the researchers surveyed the eating patterns and collected genetic information from 659 MD Anderson patients newly diagnosed with Renal Cell Cancer and 699 healthy subjects recruited from the community. Specifically, the results show that kidney cancer patients consumed more red and white meat compared to healthy individuals.
The results suggest that cooking method is an important factor contributing to the elevated RCC risk associated with consuming more meat, as both red and white meat resulted in increased risk, explained Wu.
